People forgot that part of SteamOS

"Access the full Steam catalog of nearly 3000 games and desktop software titles via in-home streaming."

Yes future title might be available to be played straight with SteamOS,but past won't. You will still need a PC to run the games

[QUOTE="rjdofu"][QUOTE="donalbane"]IT'S NOT A PC! It's like a Roku for Steam games. Jeez guys.Wasdie

No, it's totally independent from your PC, you can play most steam games on it without problem. If anything it's more like a PC-console hybrid, aka an upgradable and more open console.

Steam Machines are just PCs that are built around SteamOS. Valve has their own which will be open and upgradeable, but other comapnies may make non-upgradeable versions for cheaper.

There is really no limit. You can build your own Steam Machine too.

Then what make it cheaper than other PC in the market? If it's not cheaper, then what's the advantage? Given the size (it'll be compact), upgrade option won't be as freely as a full desktop, so there're still restriction in someway.

[QUOTE="Desmonic"][QUOTE="princeofshapeir"]What matters now is the price point. If it costs more than a PS4/XB1 there won't be any reason to own one, and you may as well settle for a gaming PC.

Pretty much. I mean if the price doesn't differ all that much from the more gaming/power oriented pre-builts then ther won't be much reason to go there, unless the OS is simply goodly for gaming and multimedia (since they want this to be a lving room OS) or they offer the OS free of charge, meaning 3rd parties (and regular users) can build their machines while saving some dollars. Either way it's a bit too soon to embrace or dismiss it. The idea is interesting at least.

Neat idea, not enough information to really judge it and its going to be hard to believe they will build Steam Machines that are priced at $400 and will run every top-end game as well as a gaming PC. Just too early to tell, but so far this seems like a really niche product and not really intended for the mass market ala PS4/XboxOne

I haven't forgot.

For Beta purposes I'm on board, but The OS itself is crappy.

Guys, the next announcement isn't going to be Half-Life 3. These announcements are about their "living room" stuff.

It would just be stupid to not announce halflife 3 after all this, without it noones even going to remember these last 2 announcements aside from the diehard linux and valve fans.  They have to put that killer APP out there STAT.

LA-Nighthawk

The Half Life 3 announcement begging is as annoying as davekeeh if not more.

But still not quite on the NeonNoir level.

So is this equivalent to a new console announcement?  Or is this essentially just a PC with a smaller form factor?

All I care is games Valve. Do you have any HL3, source 2, L4D3 to show? I don't give a crap about these OSs.

edidili

Exactly. Especially since it's an OPEN O/S which means it will be changed modified, hacked to death. I wouldn't run that on my HDTV. Steam will probably be the first thing hacked and then HLs will be prirated by millions. Good going Valve.

I see that Valve are having a go at capturing the casual console market. Good Luck competing with the PS4/X1.

Both, it is competing with the console market, using PC features.

Some will be cheaper, they will be more compact, they will be built around a TV, and it sounds like SteamOS is built around a controller. They are still PCs at heart, but they are making the HTPC a much more viable option for the every-day consumer.

Right now consumers have dozens of choices for netflix and other streaming. Consoles, blu-ray players, TVs, it's a mess and the apps are all over the place. This is a great option to have all of the native PC apps running on one machine. Simple and easy.

The SteamOS also opens up a lot of potential streaming capabilities. Imagine in the future the ability to stream your moblie device's screen right to the TV through SteamOS and a Steam Machine.

Steam Machines aren't going to be marketed to a wider audience. It's more of an evolution of the Steam Ecosystem for existing consumers. It will continue to expand at a slow, yet steady pace as they continue to include more and more features. It's also a move away from Windows and the first Linux based OS that is built around gaming.

Can't wait to see 5-6 Steam Machines sitting on shelves next to PS4/Xbox One. Consumers love to be confused. But in all honesty, this is a great potential product if you're a console only gamer and want to get into PC gaming with a potentially lower cost and living room-based solution. The problem is, we don't know the price or specs at all, so this announcement is pretty null and void. I think Steam OS is a far more exciting announcement than Steam Machines. I mean, Piston was a SteamMachine and it was going to cost $999 bucks. That's not really going to move the needle. I was hoping this announcement would be a Valve created box, with some specs to give you an idea of what it can do. We got nothing here, just potential and frankly you'd be better off just building a top tier PC and streaming your PC to your TV via SteamOS.

LordOfPoms

They did say you can build your own SteamBox. ;)

Put your own hardware in it. Load SteamOS onto it and let the world hack your system to death.

Even if there is, claiming it's like a battle between good and evil is stupid, because it isn't. It's video game websites. Also, you've demonstrated that your tastes in games are incredibly superficial.

And hacking is not a bad thing, it all depends on how people utilize it.

True, but people running it on a SteamBox can have their personal info hacked as well now. Linux isn't secure and neither will the SteamBox. It'll be interesting to see how much these systems retail for. Supposedly there will be different prices. This whole thing reminds me of the disaster called the 3DO. lol!! There will like 5-6 different systems from 5-6 different manufactures and they were ALL expensive. All of them eventually went under after about 3 years.

It will be all over the place. There are multiple Steam Machines. Some could be $99 that just have enough power to stream, others are full blown PCs.

I have a 50' HDMI cable hooked up to my reciever in my other room but it's a pain in the ass to use. I would rather just run a Steam Machine.

I don't want this to not succeed...in fact, I would prefer the PC to takeover the consoles completely, but I don't really understand what Valve was thinking. Right now, I have no reason to get a Steambox. At least with consoles, it gives me a different experience with exclusive titles, but with the Steambox? I already have one, and it doesn't just play games. :)

Yes, but the hardware it will be running out won't be FREE. They did say that you can build your own hardware, but if you already have the ultimate PC hardware, why would you need to build your own SteamBox? I'm not exactly sure who they are aiming this product for. I'm thinking PC gamers, as console gamers won't even waste their time with that crap. Especially if the price is the same or more then the PS4 and XB1.

i don't see there being just one specific price point. there will be several, depending on how much power you want. likely including one for ~100 that basically would just run indie games. and one thats ~300-500 that runs anything on steam. and several in-between.

They did say you can build your own SteamBox. ;)

Put your own hardware in it. Load SteamOS onto it and let the world hack your system to death.

Tell me which one of the last gen systems that hasn't been hacked.

And hacking is not a bad thing, it all depends on how people utilize it.

People would hack it anyway. With or without Steam permission.

I'd love to get one. I'd like to hook my WiiMote and Nunchuck and WiiU Pro Controller up to it and game on a few titles. I didn't see the announcement, did they mention anything on the price?

[QUOTE="donalbane"]Wow, I'm really confused. What's the estimated price point, then? If it's more than $100, I'll be sticking with my 32' HDMI cable.Wasdie

It will be all over the place. There are multiple Steam Machines. Some could be $99 that just have enough power to stream, others are full blown PCs.

I have a 50' HDMI cable hooked up to my reciever in my other room but it's a pain in the ass to use. I would rather just run a Steam Machine.

Yeah, I'll stick with the cable. I currently also run a 32' USB extension with a Y chord on the end to have a mouse/keyboard under my entertainment center, and just switch from one display to the other using the Windows Key+P shortcut. It's a bit clunky but the whole setup cost less than $20, and with the wireless 360 controller dongle it fills the same role as the Steam Box will do on the cheap.

Price point is what I'm wondering at this moment.  It's got to be affordable if they're chasing the console market.

:)percech

You're kind of missing the point of the SteamOS and Steam Machines. It's just a continued evolution of the Steam, giving Steam users even more options to play games. This is helping us break away from having to play on a traditional PC/laptop setup and gives us more freedoms. It also makes home theater PCs a much more viable option for people.

Its an open source OS, its desinged to be open to hacking in the first place.
