I am bit surprised, not that Halo won or anything, tho its to me is slightly overrated despite being a very good series overall (even if myself isnt a big fan of it). I am more surprised that Unreal only got 4 votes versus say Bioshock which got 11, which to me only has two titles in it; the first being very good. Unreal has a bunch of solid entries, ranging from good to great. Tho out of the other 3, I probably would have been more comfortable with Doom winning. Whatever, I guess, its all comes down to general poll, however that turns out, good or bad, Halo won.ArisShadows
The thing is one entire faction voted for 1 entire game, while the other 3 seperated into other games (like hermits for example cherris hl/doom/unreal equally)
Make a random thread doing just halo vs. unreal and unreal will easily win.

One faction voting? There was basically a total lack of fanboys for the most part. Second of all, Halo had to go through Deus Ex, ARMA and Half-Life to get to the finals.
I guarantee you that the majority of gamers will choose Halo over Unreal simply because Unreal hasn't been relevant since UT2004. Get over the console hate. Halo had one of the toughest brackets to get through to the final and the match-up against Half-Life, which should have had "more factions" as you'd like to think voting for it should have made short work of Halo. The game won fair and square. Get over yourself.

Deus Ex and Arma isn't what I'd call tough.
Indeed. It is a very agreeable winner. I second that. Very agreeable. I third it. We certainly could have done worse.

Halo has been relevant and consistent for over a decade. That is rare in games, especially shooters. A well-deserved win for sure. For once, the Gamespot community delivers a largely agreeable winner.FireSpirit117

Two well-liked games and at the end of the line was Half-Life. It was tough enough by that series' presence alone. I must say, in a place like SW where I find that MS/Xbox gets the least respect and where lems are far outnumbered by all the other barnyard animals respectively, this is a real testament to the world beater game the Halo franchise has become. :D
Now, 343i, make me proud or else. :P

Arma is well liked? I suppose most of the people were voting because of Day Z, and even still, I doubt many people here even played Arma and just voted it over AVP because they didn't know better. Deus Ex is a well liked game, but not because it's a shooter.. not even sure what it's doing there because two of three games aren't really shooters.
Dissapointed that Counter Strike didnt even make the finals. Yes Doom is good, but its Counter Strike.
Oh well, at least Halo won.

Yeah ARMAs fanfare is because of DayZ. I was surprised to see it plough through even Killzone. As for Deus Ex. It certainly didn't belong on this list as its an RPG. But it was here and would have been a notable contender if it hasn't lost to Halo. I dont think any other game outside of some of the really big ones could have knocked out Deus Ex.There's no surprise that Halo won.:roll:brimmul777I'm very surprised. I was fully expecting the series with the voiceless, character-less, empty shell of an avatar with sh!tacular gunplay to win... given how much people loved him for the "greatest character ever" award Gamespot did a while back. Given how few "lemmings" there are on SW these days, I'm surprised it even made it past the first round. It just goes to show that Halo has something more for non-fanboys that people just love/like.

First of all, the greatest gaming hero poll was largely the result of image boards having a laugh. The real stupidity there was Kratos getting as far as he did.
Personally, I don't get the "terrible gunplay" point. I've been playing a lot of shooters and I certainly find it a hell of a lot more satisfying than the gunplay in, say, Battlefield 3.

Personally, I don't get the "terrible gunplay" point.PannicAtackYou could probably play any other shooter in existence and find better gunplay. The only thing awesome about Half Life 2 was the gravity gun and crossbow. All the other guns felt wimpy and inaccurate (except maybe the .357, which never had a lot of ammo for it to be a viable primary). I've never been impressed by the gunplay in the Half Life games. Counter Strike, Day of Defeat and Team Fortress? Now that is some good gunplay (if lacking a good FOV and reference points other than hands). I'm not sure what VALVe does to make the HL games so much weaker compared to it's mods.

I'm not sure what VALVe does to make the HL games so much weaker compared to it's mods. The Magnum takes most enemies out in one hit. Of course they're going to be stingy on ammo. Besides, I was always very fond of the pulse rifle and shotgun. Though I tend to have a weakness for shotguns in any game I play. But I've played a bunch of shooters and Half-Life never stood out as having terrible gunplay. I mean, Battlefield 3, for instance, gunplay bores me to tears. But Half-Life 2 I had plenty of fun. I do admit that grabbing a Manhack and using it as a chainsaw wasn't quite as exciting as it sounds on paper, but I got plenty of thrills with the pulse rifle. Sure, I'd put Quake Live or Painkiller over it, but I think I'd certainly rank it above Star Wars Battlefront or Battlefield 3 in that department.

I disagree with the Empty shell part. In a sea of dramatic over-the-top cheesy game characters, master chief is the only one who keeps his head.

You actually care enough to comment on my opinion? What's your excuse?Resistance 3 had a better campaign than any Halo game this gen. Insomniac knocked that one out of the park.
Damn you for breaking up your post like this.
The only level I consider outright bad in Halo 3 is Cortana. I enjoyed the rest of them. Are we really defending a 5 good levels to 4 bad levels ratio. Really?
Congrats I didn't. Ambiance is fine, but all things considered it's Halo but downscaled. It is the same old Halo, but smaller. Minus the flood, and with arguably a more interesting narrative format. Outside of that though it was by the book halo. But it's also a giant shooter gallery fest which is an area Halo isn't exactly fun to play as. And ending the game on a basically a firefight esque throw down, but with none of the actual intensity of what firefight brings is also a drag
Well, that's just like, your opinion, bro. :P
I didn't think it was by the book Halo at all. It's a very different game, because you're so weak. But that's just me, and that's just you. Either way, it's not objectively a bad game, nor a bad campaign.
It doesn't have highs. It teases you into thinking it's about to step it up. Like the flight mission where you end up in space, but the majority of the time you get stuck shooting banshees, with a few of those seraphs here and there. And then that last part where you shoot points on a ship, that doesn't shoot back. Why the f*ck wasn't their a bigger group to fight with, or even more tricked out covenant space vehicles?
"well champ in that point of the story"...shut up, that's not an excuse to pull punches.
Same thing with the falcon segment. Visually it's interesting, and yes it sets the mood for watching a city getting glassed, but overall it's fly here, fight hunters, leave, fly there, fight some dudes, leave. Rinse, repeat,
Kat dies
And the other stuff? You don't do much in Zero g save for a few seconds, so boarding a cruiser is relagated to a 2 minute change up, jet packs you use for maybe a minute or two to do some ghetto platforming, and the standard vehicles stuff played a huge backseat to most of the on foot combat.
The multiplayer in the franchise is fantastic, but from where I'm sitting nothing in the campaigns has been worth writing about it since 2001. Because it's mostly carried a lot of the same issues since 2001.
Well, the cruiser doesn't shoot at you because it's too busy shooting at the Savannah. But I thought the space combat was really great. I wanted more of it. I
really enjoyed boarding the cruiser (all of it, even post zero g), fighting things in the Falcon, Sword Base (the mission), etc. I think Reach was far more than average.
But hey, that's just me. I think your problem is that you expect too much. :P Like I said, Uncharted, Gears, Call of Duty, Crysis, Killzone, etc all suffer from similar issues in one way or another.

That game has issues left, right, and center. But the guns and the upgrades for the guns make up for everything. Wack ass level design? dgaf my gun makes people vomit Stupid enemy AI? dgaf my shotgun lights people on fire Those annoying zombies? dgaf my revolver makes people EXPLODE Typical Resistance bullsh1ttery? dgaf this gun sends people to another dimension(or causes a space hole, or whatever the f*ck, I don't speak scifi) Was a lot of fun. Multiplayer was somehow lamer than Resistance 2. That was kind of impressive. Please Log In to post.
