This generation has been incredibly kind to the RPG genre. Even as we saw the decline of JRPGs on home consoles, WRPGs really came into their own, and entered mainstream popularity. JRPGs, meanwhile, found a new home on handhelds, whereas MMOs finally found a future beyond just World of Warcraft.
There were so many standout achievements this generation- from Betehsda's incredible The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, to Bioware's ode to its heritage with Dragon Age: Origins. From The World Ends With You, a standout JRPG that broke free from series conventions to Guild Wars 2, an MMO that finally moved out of World of Warcraft's shadow. This genre prospered, this genre thrived... and now, with the end of this generation upon us, it's time to look back and select the best RPGs this generation brought us.
So how do we go about it? Well, you all vote of course. In this thread, name three of your favorite RPGs. Name them in order. The first game will get 50 points, the second game will get 25 points, the third game will get 15 points. So the order you list them in is very important.
Voting is relatively simple, but there are the following stipulations:
- Only posts with at least three games listed will count towards the final tally.
- Posts with more than three games listed will only have the first three games listed count towards the final tally.
- Any RPG released on the Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, DS, 3DS, PS Vita, or PSP counts as an RPG released this generation.
- All RPGs released on PC after January 2005 count as games released this generation. MMORPGs count, provided they released after this date. Expansions to RPGs and MMORPGs count if they released after this date, even if the base game itself does not qualify (so yes, you could theoretically vote for The Burning Crusade even though World of Warcraft itself won't count).
- The first game in a given post gets 50 points. The second game gets 25 points. The third game gets 15 points.
- You can vote through Monday, November 5, 2012 Midnight CT. Any votes after that will not be considered.
- If you edit your post, make sure you make a list of all the edits you have made. This will make tallying much easier.
- You must be Level 10 or have at least 200 posts to vote.
- Only one game per series is allowed.
- Don't vote for a game that has not been localized. Import only games do not qualify. Only games that released in two out of the three major territories (NA, JP, PAL) are eligible.
- After the tallying is completed, the top five games will qualify into the Finals, in which there will be an open no holds barred poll to see which game System Wars deems as the best RPG of the generation.
Got it? That's pretty simple :P
Anyway, here we go. These are my three votes:
- The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
- Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver
- Dragon Age: Origins
