In order and a short explanation of why...
1. Final Fantasy IX: A refreshing breath of fresh air after the two previous over emotional entries to the series. I feel that 7 and especially 8 had incredibly flawedanduninterestingstories, with only fun gameplay and the idea of beating big optional baddies near end game compelling me to complete these entries. Final Fantasy IX reinvigorated the franchise in my eyes, giving me quirky, wacky characters and a story that while at the same time being kind of crap, never takes itself too seriously and embraces that fact. Whatever dark moments or serious tones that present themselves in the game are brief, and replaced by a juvenile sense of humor that one cannot help but smile at. Some of my favorite characters from the franchise; Freya, Zidane and Vivi. Old school takes center stage here, and it was awesome.
2. Final Fantasy V: Story? What story? Oh some big guy is coming back cause of crystals and what not. *Yawn* Give me my job system and incredible flexibility in my gameplay choice and quiet all that noise. Some of the best gameplay in the series, narrowly edging out XIII due to the fact that in XIII I was not offered that sort of "specialization" that I wanted. Story is laughable and writing is awful in this game, but GOD DAMN is the gameplay incredible, along with a great soundtrack. Lots and lots of replay value!
3. Final Fantasy X: My second FF ever, with VII beingmy first. The first FF that I thought had an actually good story. Tidus while being a whiner is a pretty good protagonist, and he is surrounded by a pretty good cast of characters. The romance and J-pop scene made me cringe, but it was necessary for the story I feel. Real turn-based gameplay that is great, a good story, some good characters, and lots of side content make this a good all around FF, but being a jack of all trades in my eyes doesn't really make it excel in any particular area, hence it's 3rd place spot on my top 3. Also, kudos to anyone that can kill Nemesis in the Monster Arena. I'm pretty sure he uses a God Mode cheat.
