You people that say 6 as #1 are just ugh. I found almost every game after it superior in virtually every way.

you are just a graphics whore, the game was better in every way except graphics.
Truth.
Usually when I play an old school game I used to love its just not as good as I remembered. When I play through FFVI it makes me wonder why the hell we hardly see games of that quality these days.

Both were better than 6 in almost every way.
The only thing I prefer over 6 than 8 is probably the battle/leveling system--not so much because I hated the junction/draw system, but because the enemy leveling was so broken in 8 that it wasn't even funny. If it wasn't for the leveled enemies (or if, at the very least, it didn't completely defeat the purpose of leveling other than to make everyone's numbers bigger), even that would easily better than 6. Despite that, I still enjoyed 8 immensely more than 6.
Oh, and Kefka and Ultros are > any of the villains in 8, even if 6's overall story and characters are overall not better (and that's saying something, since Squall is insufferable for about 55% of the game).
And X is probably objectively the best game in the series on all fronts, even if it's not my personal favorite, so it seemed only fair that I added it to my list.
6 and 4 are neck and neck for the "FF for hipsters" title.
If I were a hipster, though, I'd choose 4 over 6.
I really never understood what was so awesome about 6, particularly when CT came out a few months after the US FF6 (3) release and literally was a better game in every way, from graphics to story to gameplay.
EDIT: made a mistake, CT came out around 1/2 a year after VI. My mistake, I played CT first, though (hence my mistake), since I rarely was able to buy games upon release since I was lawlpoor kid.

Yes, I'm just a graphics whore because I preferred a PS1 game. PS1 with character models and pixilated faces that looked like a KISS mask makes me a graphics whore.
Right.
Just.
Right.
No, 6's story sucked, and the structure of it was downright horrid. CT 1/2 a year later was far better in every way.
Maybe I would have liked 6 more if I played it before CT, but it really just felt meh after that. 7 and 8 manage to stand out because of the great production values which manage to make them more than the sum of their parts; 6 just managed to be the best FF game "so far" as far as the mid 90s were concerned--it really didn't do anything special like CT did.

I personally thought the the characters and the story of 8 was very weak and to some extend 10 as well..
An example would be the revelation about their past I thought was very badly done and it came out nowhere. There were many points in that game that had a similar feeling. The characters were just bad especially Squall as you mentioned. X overall was aright, but even though Tidus was suppose to be the main character he really did not have point in overall story. It really was not his story but Yuna's story. I also thought Seymour was terrible villain had like Tidus the presence of his character really didn't have any point.
Anyhow I consider 8 as the worst Final Fantasy.@Vraeth
So now were a bunch of hipsters for liking FFVI? Is it so impossible to think that an old game can still be outstanding? FFVI struck a balance on all fronts that no other game in the series has managed. It did everything well, and did some things exceptionally well.
Really, just gtfo. This thread was going pretty well with people just sharing their opinions on what was their fav. Then you had to come along and start ****ing on everyone even though it is YOU with the minority opinion and poor taste in FF.

6 is a mediocre game. I'd hardly call my dislike of it poor taste.
I get people who like 4, 5 and 9.
I get people who like 12.
I get people who like CT and CC.
I do not get what is so great about FF6. I never have.
And yes, it's the hipster thing to like 6 right now, just like how hating Zelda: OoT and FFVII is the hipster thing for this gen.

It's just to say a good chunk of them are.
It's just the "cool" thing to do right now. I'm sure FFVII will make a return as the most popular as soon as the hipster's realize that they've oversaturated the FF6 love and FF7 dislike. These things always auto adjust.

I don't try to justify FFVIII as some amazing masterpiece; it's simply my favorite, but it's heavily flawed. I DO think it's better than VI. I get why people don't like VIII. I don't get why people love VI and cream themselves are the very mention of it.
I already said that I felt like X is objectively the best, even if it's not my favorite.

ITP: I know you are, but what am I?
VII expanded the fanbase exponentially, and for years was the most popular.
It being eclipsed by VI IS a recent phenomena, which is perpetuated by hipsters.
That doesn't make everyone who played it in '94 and who still love it now a hipster--I said a chunk of the FFVI fanbase, not everyone. Particularly the ones from the PS/GBA FFVI generation.
VIII was good fun in and had an interesting gameplay idea, it was just so easy to break the game. I admit to being a grinder, and at the beginning of the game I simply junctioned 100 Fires, Blizz, etc. to my characters and steamrolled the entire game from that point (Up until Omega of course). I also disliked the characters as well.. Squall was a badass lookin fellow but had the personality ofa damp cloth. Pretty easy to like the game though, it was set in a pretty cool universe with SeeD and everything. Also, I felt they really dropped the ball on the story. I mean.. I beat the game and was left going "Hmmm.. so what the fvck did.. huh?"
FF VI was a good game, but I agree it was nothing special. I can see why it's so easily adored, and I certainly think it's better than VII and VIII, but entries before and after easily surpass it.

But 6 being more popular than 7? It really is something that's come up in the past few years because...
It's now the hipster thing to do. They pad the vote atm. Guarentee 10 years from now they'll be choosing whatever game makes them look "old school and original" and it won't be FFVI anymore. The fans who liked it back in 94 will still like it, but the hipsters will be gone, and perhaps a more accurate tally can be taken.

Anyone who has paid an ounce of attention for the past 2 decades and is honest knows it's true--it's one of the big reasons so many 6 fans hate 7: they feel like 7 is only popular because way more people played it over 6.
And I couldn't care less if 8 isn't in the top spot--I never expected it to be. It's a flawed as hell game (leveled enemies are broken; Squall is a tool), but conversely it's the one that I've liked the most, for whatever reason.
It's really that whenever I see so many people frothing over 6 that I facepalm, because again, a good chunk of them are hipsters. Maybe not most, but a good chunk. Too many later games (as I've pointed out: CT) brought a lot more to the table than FF6, that I find it genuinely hard to believe that the 2nd gen FF6 crowd (people who played it AFTER games like CT and the later FFs) think it's this paragon of gaming.
@Vraeth
CT brought more to the table than most FF games in general. Why do you keep using that as some sort of shield against VI?
And why are you trying to lump everyone together? Opinions are all over the place with this series. I love FFVI, but that doesnt mean I hate FFVII lol.

My point mostly is that I find it hard to believe that anyone who played games like CT or the later FFs before they played 6 genuinely think 6 is some sort of paragon of gaming. It's just the hipster thing to do at the moment.
That doesn't mean that 6/3 wasn' the best FF "so far", as far as 94 was concerned. The story overall was better than 4/2, even if the structure wasn't ("good" VG stories I really don't feel like started until CT, but I know some will harshly disagree with that. But hey, imo.), and the gameplay is, well, standard FF fare. As I mentioned already, I think that Kefka and Ultros are awesome, so there are some things that stuck with me about 6.
I don't think every last FF6 fan is a hipster, and I believe that some who played it before games like CT genuinely felt it was great, but I don't believe Johnny-come-lately hipsters from the PS1/GBA FFVI generations are anything but hipsters.
