The 360 Arcade is a complete rip off, ESPECIALLY for gamers

An actually good argument for not buying a Arcade. If this is all true then it is terrible. I would be calling Msoft post haste to see if they are deving a patch.

kuu2
Unfortunately, it is all true. I can't even be a proper master of ceremonies for GUFU's Halo nights, because I can't download everyones map variants. Luckily though, I can spawn plenty of my own twisted and sadistic maps just fine  I mean, what? I've never made a map with teleporters that drop you into kill balls or put a crapload of weapons on a platform you will never reach. That'd just be mean.

I thought there was that leak of a 250GB HDD add-on so presumably you could get that if and when it comes out - although the price in the rumor/leak was US$129.

Cool. Half the price of the console itself. Just the deal I was looking fooorrr...

I'm not saying it's a good deal. I don't suppose wherever you bought the Arcade from would let you return it for an Elite.

The profit margin on an Elite is higher than an Arcade, so perhaps this is a deliberate disincentive to get people who know about it to buy the Elite.

And for people who don't... sorry, here buy this overpriced HDD - providing an even greater profit margin. It's somewhat bait and switchish.

I'm glad you could test it out before me so I didn't make the same mistake. After having an older PS3 and not happy about what a dust magnet the glossy system was I wanted to get thekinect 4gb system but now I see I have to get the kinect 250gb system...so sad.

I have a 360 Elite, soon to have a Limited Edition Halo Reach console.

When I bought my Elite, the guy at Gamestop warned me that the Arcade was more prone to technical problems and that alot more people turned in Arcades than Elites. I'm very happy with the 360.

In the back of the Halo 3 and ODST box, it clearly shows "optimized for hard drive". The arcade models does not have hard drives. Sometimes you have to do some research first. That is all.

[QUOTE="2Chalupas"]I thought if you got a 4GB you could add USB drive that acts as a HDD in addition to the 4GB? Damn. I was thinking of getting the 4GB as a second system. (waiting for holiday sales). If you are "blocked" from online features for no apparant reason then that is BS. I thought them going back to allowing USB hard drives solved all of this...Skittles_McGee
You can use a USB drive. However these features specifically block you from using them if you don't have an actual hard drive.

Allowing flash drives was practically useless because of this. AFAIK, you can't install anything on them, which was the point of having the feature in the first place. I tried installing GeOW map packs to test it out, but it told me that I needed an HDD. I've always thought the Arcades were rip-offs, but I didn't know it was this bad. Luckily, I basically paid under $100 for the Spring bundle. I'm guessing the 4gb and 256mb of space in the Arcades are just flash memory and don't actually count as HDD space.

Even if it did, it should be more specific. It makes no sense as to why you would need an HDD to have access to them.

[QUOTE="siLVURcross"][QUOTE="Skittles_McGee"] I could kindly take a screenshot if you like, or you may feel free to ask The_Game21x and Skinny_man_69 who were both there. Co-op, Firefight, saving films, map variants, etc. all required that I have a hard drive to use them, despite having more than enough space for all of those combined.Skittles_McGee
Well if the 360 works anything like a normal computer...I'm assuming the game takes up temporary space off your HDD for faster access. Just my guess.

A possibility. But then, why can I play the game itself, but not co-op, no? I'd think the game's levels, textures, etc. take up more space than a little coding to make co-op happen. Not that I'm arguing with you, however.

I know it sounds like a conspiracy theory, but I wouldn't be surprised if MS did it on purpose. After all, the Halo series is pretty big, and I'm sure it got many people to buy HDDs.

It doesn't sound like a conspiracy theory at all, it sounds like business. Adding an HDD and upping the price by $100 makes for a nice increase in profit margin - so they likely want to push 250 GB models.

Although it should specifically state somewhere that a hard drive is required for the game - that's where things get ethically murky.

And if it says somewhere that the Arcade will play all 360 games - that's also somewhat ethically ambiguous - technically though it still wouldn't say "all 360 games in their entirety," and no 360 does that without Live Gold though anyway.

The 360 is great for:

1. Casuals who just want to play a few games a year

2. PS3 and Wii owners who just want to play a few exclusives

3. People who aren't sure if they want to invest in the 360

4. Kids

Just because it does not meet your needs does not mean that it is horribly gimped. Geez.

That just has to do with the likelihood of Arcades being older. The elite wasn't part of the original lineup which had the worst rate of RROD.

And the Sony didn't claim that the 20GB had Wi-fi. I'm pretty sure that ever model with Wi-fi has the logo for it on the box. Certain games state that you'll need an HDD to access features, but that usually falls under DLC, installing the game to decrease load times, etc. -- stuff that you would make sense to require a hard drive.

Dunno if it was posted, but you can buy it at Gamestop.com, assuming you live in the States. The price is crazy ridiculous though :|

But it is horribly gimped. Think about how much it would cost them to add a 10-20GB HDD. It still wouldn't be so much that you wouldn't ever need a bigger HDD, but at least you wouldn't need one right away. The way it is now, you can't do much without having to go out and buy a 250GB. There's no reason to have the Arcade as an option if you're not able to do the simplest of things.

I think as time goes by it actually gets more expensive to source smaller HDDs in large quantities. Nevertheless, you can 80 GB 2.5" HDDs for like $20, in bulk it would probably wind up being like $10-15 - a similar price as 4 GB of flash memory, I think.

I'm assuming it's done deliberately to get people to either buy a 250 GB or find out later they'll need to shell out $129 extra for an HDD - bringing the cost of their Arcade to $329.

Which is why I said they should put in something like 10-20GB of space. It's not exactly generous, but it's enough to get buy with a few game installs and XBLA games. That way, you would get an HDD to avoid the hassle rather than actually needing one. I remember FFXIII taking something like 18GBs to install. Even a 20GB HDD wouldn't be able to fit all of that in because they only have 16GB of usable space.

ive had 2 arcade units. sold one and gave one away once i got my 250 gig 360.

i already had a 120 gig HD to slap on it. had years of fun with my rip off 360 arcade, tons more than with my 40 gig PS3 which is a dust magnet right now since the release of god of war 3.

now someone else is enjoying the crap out of my so called rip off 360 arcade.

this is why the 360 has such repeat business and a loyal fanbase vs that other system i own that i probably couldnt give away.

360 arcade was the best $200 bucks ive ever spent.

i would call the TC's post an epic fail, but ill get modded, so ill just say..i beg to differ with the T.C'S incisive judgement.

The Arcade is good, the problem is that for some reason even with enough memory it is blocked in Halo 3. They really should fix that, games like Ninjga Gaiden 2 for example have no problem on an Arcade. Halo 3 is weird in many ways, such as installing increases load times...

Yeah, exactly. I figured, 4GB can't possibly be too little space (especially for co-op of all things).

seriously, Skittles, do you have your old 360 HDD (that is, if you had one before the slim)? your old HDD will work in a slim. you just have to do an, ahem, modification. don't worry, it won't void your warranty.

I do not. I sold my old 360 to get this new one. I figured, lets not mince words, it's over 3 years old, its gonna break eventually. Let it be someone else's problem :P

There wasn't much I valued on the HDD that I couldnt get back, so I sold that with it. But I am still slightly intrigued by this, I'd just rather not break open my brand new console.

dang...that's too bad. its on google if you ever obtain a cheap 20GB (btw, i know this is a work around - believe me, i find MS proprietary HDD revolting as well), all you need to do is undo the casing on the HDD. there are SATA ports on both the old HDD and the 360 slim. don't worry, if you ever decide to do it, it will do absolutely no damage to your console. if you ever get curious, google it, and they'll give you a brief tutorial. i'm in the same boat as you. my wife, love her, bought me an arcade after my old one RROD'd. unfortunately, i didn't realize it had no HDD until i opened the package. i'm hoping my 20gb lasts me until i get the new 250 gb HDD.

Interesting. I wonder if I can even find a 20GB (thats all I'd need, really.) I mean, it still sucks, but at least there's some solution. Probably still cheaper than going all out on another system anyway. I'll have to see what Reach does. With any luck, the theory some of us discussed earlier about the 256mb model might be true, so Reach will updated to recognize I have a hell of a lot more than 256mb.

Geez.

RogueShodown

But it is horribly gimped. Think about how much it would cost them to add a 10-20GB HDD. It still wouldn't be so much that you wouldn't ever need a bigger HDD, but at least you wouldn't need one right away. The way it is now, you can't do much without having to go out and buy a 250GB. There's no reason to have the Arcade as an option if you're not able to do the simplest of things.

Whatever it would cost them is irrelevant.

For the people in those groups the system is not gimped. The system exists mainly for playing games and the arcade allows them to do that. Kids who play games like Harry Potter and Lego Star Wars do not need 250GB of hard drive space. Casuals who just want to play Madden or GTA do not need 250GB of hard drive space. PC gamers who keep the system for a few local coop games like Gears of War do not need 250gb of hard drive space.

When I first bought a 360 I just wanted to play a few exclusives so I bought the arcade. I had a lot of fun with it and I didn't at all feel restricted. About 4 months later I decided that I liked the system and bought the hard drive for $120. Did I regret not buying the pro to being with? Not at all since I wasn't sure how much I would like the system. Keep in mind the arcade I bought only had 256 mb of ram. But for saves that is plenty of room and initially I only wanted to play a couple exclusives offline.

I wonder if this will be the same case with Reach.:?

Skittles_McGee
You'll know if it is, I'll put a picture in my blog with my 360 controller sticking out of my TV.
The Arcade is good, the problem is that for some reason even with enough memory it is blocked in Halo 3. They really should fix that, games like Ninjga Gaiden 2 for example have no problem on an Arcade. Halo 3 is weird in many ways, such as installing increases load times... SaltyMeatballs
Yeah, exactly. I figured, 4GB can't possibly be too little space (especially for co-op of all things).

Indeed, it should be. But Halo 3 is like that. MS's choice I guess, which ****ing sucks. I remember when I had a Core, all other games do co-op fine, NG2 does theatre fine, etc, but in Halo 3 you needed a HDD. Ironic since MS's flagship is gimped on MS's Arcade console, which they chose to sell.

now that extra $100 for the 250GB didn't seem like such a bad idea

That sucks, this is the reason why I don't own a 360 anymore. MS would suck you dry and leave you to rot. Currently own a pc and ps3 and never looking back.
