Is this the only option? No.
Do a lot of people prefer to pay a little upfront and more over the corse of a few years? Yes
Is it a method with proven results? Yes.
Are people really gonna complain about this? I wish all consoles did it, it's just another way for everyone to be able to afford the console they want.
Many stores already do similar plans with consoles, why shouldnt MS offer one for their own console?

B. It's not a huge rip off, It's simply spreading the cost over a period of two years. Which will obviously mean you'll have to pay more in the long run. Pretty much every premium product has this option, all that's happening now is the manufacturer (MS) is offering the service too
M$ is master rip off artist and lems are masters at getting ripped off. It's kind of sad, and pathetic.

The PS3 launch price WAS a horrible deal. I paid £550, upfront, for a console with very little software backing it up.
Being able to spread the cost of 2 years is a very good deal for a HUGE amount of people. Look at Smartphones, do you think everyone cna afford to spend £500 on an iphone, on top of whatever monthly plan they're going to need? Of course not. Yes it'd be cheaper to do so, but contract phones still far outsell sim free deals.
You would only have a leg to stand on had MS gave this method as the ONLY option. Which they're not stupid enough to do.

Software is one argument...the hardware however is another.
Could you complain about the price of buying an HDTV when if first came out because there weren't many HD movies...if it didn't change the fact that you still were getting a TV that had the tech to so? NO, you were paying for more advanced hardware and technology. Talking about software doesn't change the fact that the tech inside PS3 was there.
I am going to give you a big NO! for your argument. Personal feelings aside, you can't argue that the PS3's launch price was a horrible deal for the tech it had and the time it came out. It's not even an opinion, you can't argue that it was a horrible deal...you could argue that it was too expensive as a game console, but that is about it. And if you make that arguement how the hell could you defend the 360 $400 launch price?
Do I need to remind you of what both PS3 and 360 launched with tech for tech? This "deal" we are talking about now comes 7 years later and $50 more than the launch price of the original cost of the console. Good deal?

Xbox 360 is technically more expensive. You'd have to pay for Xbox Live if you want to play online and all the goddamn things such as Wi-Fi adapter, batteries for the controller, etc.
So £425 for a PS3 was reasonable.

Perhaps one should just wait for the equally powahful Wii U launching soon at the low, low price of $350.00 ? :o
I kid but really, with the 360, and I'm sure Sony will drop the price of PS3 pretty soon as well, does Wii U have what it takes ? I dunno ?

It's a horrible deal in comparison to the launch Xbox which, not only released a year earlier, but also at a much better price, with better software.

It works for phones, so I let's see how it works for consoles. If it will be succesfull I'm pretty sure that MS will offer similar deal with next Xbox. Add some cable companies to it and it might push nextbox to be the best selling next gen console.

You have only simply said "it's a horrible deal" and then used software as your back up. The quality of the software at the time is opinion...the hardware and tech in the PS3 is FACT. You can't argue it.
Also, you gave figures for one that was not even in the same dollar format, I was looking for something I could easily compaire since you mentioned similar deals were out. I would have done it myself but can you tell me how they compaire since you are using different money values?
If it added a worthy plethora of meaningful features...I'd think about it since I can afford it.
This type of contract / deal is not suitable for a console that doesn't offer the right stuff, yet. At least not this generation.
But its a genius way to make money.
This is the type of contract masses pay for cellphones or Cable Tv. Which are a vital part of everyday life.
A gaming console falls short compared to these two.
uh no you're paying for them. It's incremental payments that add up, the lure is a cheap entry price. You know, the same kind of lure the 'buy now for X and pay back with Y payments over Z months'! offers are. Decades old now.basically getting Kinect and 2 years of live for free, and some people like the the poor fellow in my signature can't afford a console.

It's not getting 2 years of live for free. You pay $99 for the console, and you only get that deal if you sign a contract on the spot to also get 2 years of live, at $15 per month. You're getting nothing for free, you're getting a "discounted" console because you're committing to spend even more than regular retail price over the next 2 years on the service. Identical to a cell phone contract.
