How are the battles done in Suikoden? Do you only use a couple guys at a time? With that many people, wouldnt the story be week?

Haha if DDS 1 is good, then I will buy DDS2 eventually.

NaveedLife

Edit: Someone beat me to explaining it.
Turn-based and you use 6 people at a time. Also, nah the story isn't weak, it's quite enjoyable. I can't speak on 2,3, or 5, but I hear those are pretty good.

Also, I mostly just said that because while DDS1 story is pretty good, DDS2 just completely surpasses it storywise. I hope you enjoy it.

IMO, Baten Kaitos is one of the most underrated JRPG's of all time. I tink it's the unique setting that appeals to me. By contrast, most JRPG's use familiar cliche's in setting. Lost Odyssey is an example, it seems like such a cut and paste job, along with FF XII, most of the Dragon Quest series etc.

Then you have games like Eternal Sonata, which is truly bizarre.

NaveedLife

I tried Baten Kaitos, but I hated the battle system so much I couldnt play the game anymore.

Which one, and how long did you give it? I suggest giving it a fair shot, and whichever one it was, try the other because they changed it quite a bit. Same card based game, but very different way of playing. I prefer the second ones battle system although both are great to me.

I played the first one. Didnt get very far into it. I dont know why I didnt like the card based battle system, it was just boring for me. I probably should have given it more time though.

Xenogears had a great story that revolved around politics, religion, social class, and fantasy.

I'm not sure about best but my favorites are Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy IX and Final Fantasy VII. Pokemon Silver to if you want to count it. Haven't played to many jrpgs not on the PS1 and 2, most of the 360's are pretty disappointing I quit handheld gaming this gen and I wasn't much of a gamer prior to last gen. I haven't had much opportunity to play not Square jrpgs. I didn't really dig Xenosaga, someone stole my copy of Chrono Cross(It's Square, yeah, but still). i thought Rogue Galaxy, Tales of Vesperia, Lost Odyssey and Tales of Symphonia were all pretty good but no were near as good as my favorites. I did barrow Persona 3, Star Ocean: The Last Hope and Star Ocean: Till the End of time but I didn't have them long enough to play too long. Every other Jrpg I've played I didn't really like too much.

Chrono Trigger, Persona 4, and Valkyria Chronicles have far and away the best stories of any JRPG's I've played. Each of these stories simply focus on building awesome characters instead of the contrived "chosen one" plots found in many RPG's (though there's some of that in these games, too).

Is the battle system different then VII's? I love the music and atmospher of VII, but i hate the chibi (apparently thats what its calle) style of the characters and the battle system seems somewhat boring to me so far. The pics I viewed looked rather beautiful! Nice artwork indeed!

True, it's an awesome game, but I never finished that game. Wish I could go back to finish it. And my avy is from Before Crisis.

The ending is truely mindblowing, you'll never see the plot twists coming !!

Someone else that loves BK! Now I have to try TWEWY as you like both BK and it ;).

BTW, if the question is purely on story and presentation and such, then my answers might change to favor FF X, as the story and feeling of that game are what drove me forward.

wh...wh...wh... why? the battle is the best part! ok not really but it's still a great part! baten kaitos is great, underrated, underappreciated AND unknown, but i wouldn't put it on my "best JRPGs ever".

Why? because they belong with nintendo? Vesperia and abyss are all superior to symphonia and gonden sun is really not that good people.

i read the discussion that followed but i wasn't around to take part, so i'll just give a really late reply: i never played either abyss or vesperia because i don't own a console with the game. hopefully they don't cancel the abyss port to the 3DS and localize it. chances are slim, but i can hope. with that said, tales of symphonia is the best in series i've played, and one of the best, most engaging RPGs i've played. plus, multiplayer battle with 3 more friends is awesome. as for golden sun, i can't remember any RPG other than pokemon (and paper mario) that i have played before it, so i'm pretty sure it's the game that introduced me to JRPGs. not only that, but they're great games on their own, with a nice story, one of the best turn based battle systems i've ever seen AND dungeons that rely more on puzzles than "how long can you survive this maze before dropping dead due to the enemy encounters?". and these puzzles are on zelda level of quality. it's not really surprising to see why i consider it my favorite RPG series. and you didn't even need to read that paragraph to figure it *points at avatar*

Grandia.

It has a tangible and well-defined world mythos that is elaborated upon throughout the game by local cultures, each which have their own take upon it which extremely few games have achieved. It has one of the best combat systems in an RPG, combining the best parts of turn-based and action RPGs. It's graphics range from colorful and playful to dark and dead and hold up well today. It's soundtrack has some very memorable pieces too.

I personally don't find Golden Sun to be that great of a series either, but to Bruno they are so let it be.Ragnarok1051

Golden Sun did a lot of things right but story wasn't really one of them. The game did a good job making exploring fun and rewarding, although there were points where the random encounter rate was too much.

Just as an RPG though I give the much more poorly reviewed (and much less well-known) Lufia: The Ruins of Lore the edge. It's similar in style and feel and IMO much better.

Vesperia is great and in some ways better, but I prefer Symphonia, mainly due to the cast of characters, the story, and just how it all plays out I guess.

Out of all the JRPG stories I have experienced, the character development in Suikoden 2 is among the most "forced" I've seen.

Xenogears and Xenosaga on the other hand, are able to boast more natural character development fueled by well thought out characters.

Xenogears and Xenosaga on the other hand, are able to boast more natural character development fueled by well thought out characters.

how is Suikoden II's character developement forced? Hint, it isn't. In fact, Jowy's was incredibly well done and thought out. And except for maybe one instance, Suikoden II never forces its themes or its influences. Xenogears and Xenosaga feel forced and pretentious, eevn preachy. Even Gamespot has said it. Xenogears is not a bad story, its actually pretty good, however, its not as great as fans of the game crack it up to be.

Why all the love for FFX, that game is simply horrible. I'll go with FF7 8)
