The Civilization 5 Hype Thread *Gamespot 9.0*

Great score! It's lacking features that were present in Civ IV: BTS, but that game has two expansion packs and half a decade of tweaks to it's name. One of the best things about Civ is that it's guaranteed to get better and gain more features as time goes on. With a core/vanilla game as good a Civ V, the future is looking extremely bright and could probably end up my favourite in the series.

Im playing the trial on steam at the moment....I think I am going to have to get this game. It does kind of annoy me that there is an additional civ that costs extra to play as.... Does anyone know if the extra 10 dollars is worth it for the extra civ: Babylon?QuetzaIcoatl

From what I've read it isn't worth it (one extra civilization for ~33% of the game's value?), but it really depends on how much disposable income you have. If you have the money, then why not? And Firaxis are giving some money gained from sales of Civ V to charity, so it isn't going to waste.

I still havn't got around to playing CIV:4 which i got for 10$ in the steam sale :(

I'm the exact opposite, these games suck me in for weeks at a time. My perception of time completely fails me when I'm playing a Civ game, now that I think about it it's kind of scary.

All the hype around Civ5 re-ignited my passion for Civ in general. Long ago I bought Civ4 during a steam sale, never got around to it until earlier this week, got me hooked for awhile... Tried the Beta of 5 and alas it runs poorly, plus I'm broke so I need to wait until I can build a new rig and then get the game. :P

A 9.0, is a nice score, I can't remember where but I can remember Kevin VanOrd earlier stating that the only games he thought was worthy of a 9.0 or above was Mass Effect 2 (around the time he reviewed Monster Hunter 3). So this is still probably in his top 5 this year :).

Now, I should I go to sleep? Since by the time I wake up the game should be ready and I shall conquer the world as Mother Russia (double resource still ftw).

I'm broke.

I'm playing the free week Minecraft, and I played the demo of Recettear, and I just plain can't afford a $50 game.

Maybe, just maybe I'll buy all three, and just live off bologna and cheese for a week or two :P

I mean even among PC gamers this game has flown mildly under the radar (not in comparison to the way it has gone under console gamers radar), but still in the PC world CIV V's release hardly equals that of say SCII earlier this year or the hype that will be surrounding Cataclysm.

uh, Civ is in no way small. Its been the top played game on Steam since launch, and its not even avaliable in most of the world yet.

Civ games are insanely popular! Civ4 hit over 3million copies!

I was playing today after class for about twenty minutes when it crashed, costing me all the progress I made (a new city, a new wonder, etc.), which made me rage. I got too caught up into it to save. :cry:

the civ games have long been popular with critics and buyers.

I heard the government and religon systems were a lot more simplified or "dumbed down" from Civ 4. I heard this from a rather silly, unreliable fellow tho. Can anyone confirm this?locopatho

The social policies system is far inferior to the civics system, and religion is removed (although outside of modding I believe that was for the better, too broken in Civ 4 tbh where it made diplomacy too predictable). Social policies are like talent trees, and I dont know what they were thinking tbh, you can have a monarchy, oligarchy, theocracy and democracy on at the same time. I have no clue how that is possible. Also once you get a new social policy you can not remove it, meaning that once you have a monarchy, you will always be a monarchy, if you have a tyranny you will always have a tyranny, which is very historically inaccurate.

Outside of those 2, the game is superior to Civ 4.

With it's expansion packs and latest patch, yes. I'd argue it's one of the best in the series.

Not amused at all. Working nights this week, came home and still had 2 hours b4 unlock on steam. I decided to go to bed, got up at 2pm, had an hour in the gym, shower then settled down to play Civ5. It was then my 7 year old daughter reminded me i promised her she could play on my PC today.

Sat and watched her playing world of zoo and Armourd Princess...waiting for her to get bored. No such luck. Now i have to go to work again and all i have done is go into the options and set a game up lol.

Ahh well, tomorrow wil lbe the day.

She has a Wii with over 50 games, we also have PS3 and 360 with well over 100 games. I also have another gaming PC but my eldest was on that.

She wanted MY pc cos my steam has the best games lol.

Maybe it's like this: You first have a monarchy, and it turns into an oligarchy with some of the influences of its past monarchy. Or maybe it just doesn't make much sense. Same with Napoleon living for 5000 years I suppose. I agree though, they could have made your choices seem a little more realistic or exclusive.meme_peddler

You get Oligarchy before Monarchy (I believe that means you evolve from a Oligarchy to a Monarchy), but still as you said this system does not make a lot of sense nor is it really realistic. Some Choices are mutually exclusive, such as Piety and Rationalism as well Liberty/Freedom vs Autocracy. This means that you cant gain the bonuses of Police State and Fascism at the same time as Democracy.

But yeah, you are probably right about the evolution part. In Civ 4 when you adopted a new civic you would often have to deal with it's drawbacks (cost most of the time) as well as bask in in its strengths while sometimes wishing you had another system and having AI leaders whining about about how you should adopt their fave civic.

Now they just feel like talents from a MMO and the civics are just names rather than how YOU ruled your people.
