Your gonna love this game man, so awesome :)
I am playing as Japanese in my new game, on a map someone made of the real world :D
Pretty dang fun!
Played liek 18 hours on it since its been out
I got the game today, I have already played it for 6 hours, and won once as Russia on the King difficulty :). I am now playing on a earthlike map as well, with all 19 Civilizations.
And since you are playing as Japan I would like to tell you that Japan decided to declare war on me, they did not survive the next 30 turns .
Addicting game is addicting.

haha, good stuff man.
I won a game as the Greeks yesterday, was very satisfying :P
Now I am Japan on harder difficulty :P
Was so funny though in my first game.. everyone was picking on the USA so i guarded them.. they had only one city left adn it was in teh middle of about 2- cities of mine.. so if others wanted to get at the USA they had to go threw TONS of cities of mine to get to there last city
I destroyed everyone else and then let USA live for awhile.. but then eventually when it was USA and the Greeks left, I had to squash them :P
Game is to fun, try going to the MOD section and downloading some of the maps people have made, a few cool ones ;)
*Think someone even made another civlization/country.
And yes addicting game is addicting,
[QUOTE="locopatho"]I heard the government and religon systems were a lot more simplified or "dumbed down" from Civ 4. I heard this from a rather silly, unreliable fellow tho. Can anyone confirm this?Maroxad
The social policies system is far inferior to the civics system, and religion is removed (although outside of modding I believe that was for the better, too broken in Civ 4 tbh where it made diplomacy too predictable). Social policies are like talent trees, and I dont know what they were thinking tbh, you can have a monarchy, oligarchy, theocracy and democracy on at the same time. I have no clue how that is possible. Also once you get a new social policy you can not remove it, meaning that once you have a monarchy, you will always be a monarchy, if you have a tyranny you will always have a tyranny, which is very historically inaccurate.
Outside of those 2, the game is superior to Civ 4.
Thanks for answering, that does sound a bit disappointing, but as you say every other aspect seems to be much improved, so I can live with that :Dhaha, good stuff man.

Just like in Civ 4 there will be tonnes of mods dedicated to adding a single civ, I remember hearing a lot of people from various countries whine about the lack of their nationality in the game but I reckon those who buy Civ 5 and still want their nation will just add it in with a mod just like they did in Civ 4. So you can expect a lot more mods adding in new Civs but dont expect them to unite and make one big extra Civilization pack. In a mod heavy game like Civ adding DLC is not a very good idea, so lets hope they refrain from it as much as possible.
I am generally happy with the Civilizations that are in the game (my nation is not in, but then again, it doesnt really need to be there). My only gripe is that there is no Spain... or Mongolia .

Indeed, I feel the same, hopefully someone can implement the good old civics system from civ 4 while keeping the talent trees for other things.
Oh and about your sig, on my current playthough I am playing as the arabs, controlling the economy, massing units and soon I shall leave a blazing trail conquering my neighbours capitols, try protecting your Castle from me :P (then again I am not Saladin)

Haha that's awesome, I'll cya on the battlefield :DWhat do you guys think is the best way to quickly make gold? SAGE_OF_FIRE
Lend resources to other civilizations, use merchant specialists, gain money from money specialised plots, especially when it comes to great merchants.
If you are powerful you can also try to demand gold from other civilizations.
Edit: By the way Loco are you getting the game? If so we might indeed see eachother on the battlefield :)

But you also have to understand that they are "Social Policies" NOT Government types. You're choosing legislation within the Government, not the government itself. So if you want to be a monarch, pick the policies that best reflect that.
My only gripe, that I agree with you on though, is that you can adopt almost all the policies. Only two of the tree's conflict but the talent icons are pretty much all beneficial. They should of made the talents with both benefits and negatives.
But overall, I'll take the social policies over CivIV's clunky civic/religion system anyday.

Blue-Sky
Most are as you say legislations but some do in fact refer to who is the Governor. Most people I know prefer the Civic system and although a few prefer the new. Personally, I have always hated talent trees so the saying "haters gonna hate" might work here. My main problem with the new system is how you cant remove a policy once you have adopted it and there are no penalties whatsoever for any of them.
In addition, in Civ 4 each had their own cost and some of the civics had consequences like Free religion (no state religion), Pacifism (Each unit costs 1 additional gold), Merchantilism (foreign companies have no effect, no trade outside your own borders), State Property (corporations have no affect at all) and Emancipation (which still causes unhappiness to allies).
With that said, one thing I like with the new social policy is how it affects your own title. I can be President Maroxad or Maroxad the Terrible.
He's gone now :P SAGE_OF_FIRE
Serves him right. On my playthrough I have taken down two empires with just spearmen and warriors even though I am in the renaissance, despite that I have not lost a single unit, they will keep on falling for my tricks, I might play online sooner or later so I can face a much more slippery foe.
The lack of a proper save function in MP, no earth map, inability to reconnect and no toggle for showing animations makes Civ V's multiplayer outright fail at 3/10 Luckily the Single Player is experience is somewhat solid at 8.5, maybe a 9/10.Wiffle_Snuff
You can download EARTH MAPS alreayd from the mod menu..
Alternate history :P It's not quite as bad, but didn't the Spanish have guns and cannon vs the Aztecs much cruder weaponry? Massive tech differences not unheard of!I've tried to get into the Civ series, but every cell in my history majoring body cries out when I see an Iowa-class battleship bombarding an ancient Egyptian nation. :(
