Maybe blog material, but I see the difference between PC's and current gen consoles widening fast . High Definition was a nice distraction to make current gen consoles competitive against expensive high end PC's with minimal difference (that was before Crysis came out) . There's a rumor that the next gen won't start before 2015 (I know Microsoft is hiring people to design hardware) and Sony is still strugling to make PS3 profitable .

This makes me wonder, are consoles going to stay competitive compared to PC's until at least 2015 . I see the PS3 having a good line up this year and Microsoft has the Kinect to make money . But what about the next years . I honestly cannot play the same graphics until 2015 anymore ! Time to change to PC gaming again ? the previous time I wanted to change, the xbox360 came out a few months later, but this time, things aren't about to change in console land for quite some time...and Battlefield 3 and Crysis 2 look so much better on PC !!!

It happens every gen. But it could get severe this time around due to the time frame. 4 years is a long time for a new console.

I don't know if this is your first generation gaming or not but this happens towards the end of every consoles generation...with few exceptions consoles are not upgradable (32X and Sega CD not withstanding). Hence there visuals will be limited greatly by the hardware designed in the beginning. When the next generation of consoles launches they will be on par with PC's from that time frame.

Well there's more to games than pretty visuals.

I honestly think consoles will still be very competitive (in terms of demand at least) because I suspect many gamers would rather just insert a game and play straight away rather than download drivers, remove conflicting software, possibly overclock your GPU, and fiddle with the settings before you get a stable game.

Convenience is highly attractive.

Blows my mind that you didn't mention Wii. Wii 2 is comming in approx 1.5 years from now and it will force at least MS to answer. I don't think MS or Sony dares to take a risk by releasing first because of what happend this gen, they're waiting for Nintendo to make a move.

How exactly is the gap closing when PC keeps evolving and consoles remain the same as they were 5 years ago? How is that possible?

Why not use Crysis as an example? Should we use a multiplat which is limited by console hardware?

Well comparing PC to consoles is basically comparing 2005 tech with 2011. Makes no sense.

But even right now we're barely seeing a difference. Yeah, okay. One or two games on the PC look leagues ahead of the consoles but the rest? Marginally better, if at all. Games like Gears of War, Killzone, Uncharted. They've all managed to keep up pretty well

Do you expect from a multiplat to look leagues ahead on the PC? Multiplats are made to run on consoles with a few graphical tweaks on PC. What blockbuster PC exclusive we had lately? Only Shogun 2 and it does look leagues ahead from console games. Is just massive.

The gap being wide has no impact on console gaming at all, it's actually the contrary, PC gaming gets gimped because of consoles.

Most PC games come on DVD. DVD is 90's tech. That's why a game like Crysis can be beautiful on one end but on the other end have redundant textures limited animations and limited enviornments. Can't complain about consoles having "2005" tech when most PC games are using a storage format from 1997.

Because i've seen it so many times. If crysis is really the only game to showcase the PC then I don't think there is any gap what so ever. It's just one game.

Easy, developers make games so they run on the oldest of PCs, that are from 6-7 years back

And will always be like that, you cant target the 0.1% of gamers that have the latest GPU and upgrade every 4 months

I hope that was a joke O.o most PC games are DD, and those who aint have a dvd disk and can use it soley because PC games can not run from the disk, but required a full install on the HDD, thats why no serious PC gamer think alot of BluRay when it comes to gaming on PC, it is utterly pointless nomatter how you look at it, most PC games comes on one dvd, yet hold somewhere to (checks) oh 15 gigs it seems. So yea...no.

If it was a joke then carry on :P

Funny how back in 09-2010 most everyone wanted consoles to last 10 years and when its actually annonced for 10 the next gen "haz to be launched in 2012-13". I've always said that a gen should last 5 years max and not one more year. If the 360 is really staying for another 4+years it'll be pathetic, that is all.

True. It has always been the same. It gets bigger then it gets shorter, just to get bigger again, and after a while shorter again, and so on.

TL;DR Blame developers. Even PC developers are gimping graphics on purpose, so more people can play their titles, and who can blame them?

Comparing games that are available on both systems is pretty stupid.

Obviously the game was designed from the ground up to run on consoles.

Just comparing hardware, high end PCs of todays standard are pretty much 3 times as powerful as any console. Yes, even TeH_CeLL!!!11

The problem is PC developers not taking advantage of the PCs hardware. If the best looking game there have ever been is indeed Crysis 1, a game from early 2007, imagine how games could potentially look.

If the best looking game ever is indeed Crysis 1 is all its glory, imagine what Crytek would have been able to do, today, with todays graphics cards and hardware that are easily 2-3 times as good as in 2007.

If you look at benchmarks of the newest PC hardware, and compare it to hardware from 2007, it scores 3 and even sometimes 5 times as many points. If they included console hardware that are almost 6 years old, it would be a slaughter and look embarresing to say the least

who cares?? PCs are so far ahead but why do the games not look that much better?? SIMPLE its in how the games are made..You can have all the power you want in a PC but if the games dont take advantage of it..IT WONT MATTER...Plain and simple...consoles are keeping up just fine. We have all just jumped into the whole HD thing this gen and really we're still trying to get there..Could....care....less

Not really. The PC, PS3 and 360 versions of Crysis 2 look almost identical. The differences between them are very minor.

If we go even further back to the 8-bit era, there was a time when consoles were in fact superior to PCs.

Wouldn't the graphical gap betweeen PCs and consoles naturally widen, as PC hardware is improving while the console hardware stays the same?

If I were a PC gamer, I'd be upset that it was widening further, faster, and in more noticeable ways.

nope because developers dont make big budget PC exlcusives anymore, with the user installed base (now almost 100 million) of consoles increasing and actually gaining in momentum (now getting casual gamers also from the Wii) developers and publishers will only make games first and foremost for the consoles as this kind of revenue just cant be ignored

and then the PC will get the ports. wihich of course will look better but not even close to the generation in hardware difference (the PC has) would suggest

as the hardware race rages on developers will just not put the required invesment into creating these advanced graphics when the profit wont even be anough for a meal for everyone at Pizza hut

the question is why do people continue to even buy the latest hardware? I havent upgraded for 2 years and dont need to...well until the next gen of consoles comes out, it just isnt needed unless you like counting frames per second and seeing what ridiculous resolutions you can attain on a little 24 inch monitor

720p looks great on my 50 inch TV, so why do you need 2560 by 1900 on a 24 inch!? it boggles the mind

Uncharted 2 and Killzone 3 are perfect examples, give developers familiar hardware and its amazing what they can pump out of 5 year old hardware, even Halo Reach character models looked fantastic... some of the best out there

while I still play PC games, the people that keeps upgrading are..well...being bent over and shafted by AMD and nvidia, I just wont buy into it anymore

Most PC games come on DVD. DVD is 90's tech. That's why a game like Crysis can be beautiful on one end but on the other end have redundant textures limited animations and limited enviornments. Can't complain about consoles having "2005" tech when most PC games are using a storage format from 1997.

If you play games because of graphics you should rather not game on the consoles at all. The graphical difference was huge already when Crysis came out.

i had a monster PC when Crysis came out and struggled to get 15FPS on 'high' settings, no PC could run it well enough for it to be playable

Uncharted 2, God Of war 3, killzone 2 has some of the best visuals on any platform, hence they won most of the best graphics awards in their repsective years, I playd GOW3 again the other day and it looks staggeringly good

its the 'talent' that primarily makes the game look good and not the 'hardware', hardware is only a tool and while it can certainly aid and help graphics, it is not the be all and end all by any means

which is why Skyrim looks half a gen better than Oblivion on the same hardware,

[QUOTE="EddieTheHead84"][QUOTE="nintendo-4life"] Because i've seen it so many times. If crysis is really the only game to showcase the PC then I don't think there is any gap what so ever. It's just one game.Pray_to_me

The Witcher 1 and 2, ARMA 2, Shogun 2 Total War and Battlefield 3 just off the top of my head.

The Witcher 1? Is that a joke? That game has horrible graphics at any setting.

IDK maybe it was me but I thought it looked okay, it also older than those games.

the question is why do people continue to even buy the latest hardware? I havent upgraded for 2 years and dont need to...well until the next gen of consoles comes out, it just isnt needed unless you like counting frames per second and seeing what ridiculous resolutions you can attain on a little 24 inch monitor

720p looks great on my 50 inch TV, so why do you need 2560 by 1900 on a 24 inch!? it boggles the mind

gillri

First of all, I've never seen a monitor with resolution, you probably mean 2560x1440 or 1600. And monitors with that high of a resolution are usually 30". And the difference between those resolutions and 720p is a huge difference, games look much better from 720p to 1080p, and 1440p is an even bigger jump.

And you're telling me that :P

Still Crysis eats any console game tech wise.

There is no limitations on pc, we don't have to fit everything on 1 dvd, we can install it to a hd, it doesn't have to be able to play from a disc, heck no games play off discs.
