[QUOTE="Aku101"][QUOTE="Nedemis"] and that's enough to know how the series is. If it's not, then that is quite possibly the worst overall conceived story in the world. Nedemis
According to your reasoning, if people ahve only seen Episodes 1 and 2 of Star Wars then that's enough to know how the series is
seeing how they weren't the first two made, that'd be going out of order (considering Lucas felt that episode 4 was the best starting place for beginning the story back in the late 70's. Every story has a starting place and for the Star Wars series, number 4 was that. For MGS, it's the first game in the solid franchise therefore making it the first one to play in order to gain some understanding of the story. If you're going to play by order then play the first Metal Gear, but even then you can play MGS 1 and 2 and have a grasp of the story like most people do. It sounds like you were a bit disappointed at how many questions were raised and unanswered with MGS 1 and 2, the answers to those questions come in MGS 3 and 4. It's called playing the whole series

I do know t hat the goggles are used so the player knows where Sam is but hey how convenient is that of an excuse to get around the fact that guards don't notice the green lights on his head.
Octo-camo while tranqing is one way to beat the game and you can neutralize the enemies without them alerting HQ, so it IS STEALTH
You can also beat every MGS game without alerting the enemy of your presence or even killing them or heck even knocking them unconscious.

Uh....You're downplaying Splinter Cell's stealth gameplay simply because the protagonist has a few lit objects on him? That, in no way, affects the gameplay, so why does it matter? And, yes, I have heard that you can beat every MGS game without alerting the enemy to your presence. Never done it myself, but I know it can be done. Simply because it can be done does not mean that it is the most effective way to go about playing through the games. In games like Splinter Cell and Thief, it is extremely encouraged that you not set any alarms or alert anyone-in Thief, you are extremely weak at combat, and in Splinter Cell, you have so little health that if more than one person finds out about you, you're pretty much screwed. MGS doesn't focus on the stealth quite as strictly as either.

as you pointed out, it's there so the gamer knows where Sam is. It'd be impossible to find him in some areas given that it can be dark enough to the point of making him invisible to the naked eye. Something such as the goggles is meant solely for the gamer and as an icon or visual that keeps the series in tack with something unique to the franchise.did you like the Halo series? btw, the "solid" franchise holds basic storyline similarities with Metal Gear, but it also started a whole new franchise for Konami.Nedemis
I have a 360 but I don't own any Halo games. I've only played the multiplayer and it was similar to UT. Seeing as I've never played the SP of Halo I can't really comment.

You could play like that tranquing everything, or you could go guns blaziing. Personally I try to get through sections causing as little disturbance as possible, aka, no guns. But sometimes it is fun tranquing everyone, its this choice that makes the game so good.[QUOTE="thepwninator"][QUOTE="g0ddyX"]I've never played it, so I can't really comment...

I simply don't think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread like many of the people here do.
They could have made sam fisher detectable by the player by some other means such as an outline of his body but whatever I digress. Of course MGS is not the greatest thing since sliced bread and it is not the best gaming series since there is NO greatest gaming series. It will always be different for everyone. But for me it is the best.
But saying that it's story is garbage like some did while saying that Mario and Zelda storylines were better is complete and utter ignorance.
I never said Mario and Zelda storylines were better :? As a matter of fact, I don't think anyone did. I did, however, say that games like Deus Ex and Planescape: Torment have significantly superior storylines, but that's because, in my world, those two, along with a few others, are just on an entirely different plane of existence from pretty much everything else :PThey could have made sam fisher detectable by the player by some other means such as an outline of his body but whatever I digress. Planescape: Tourment is often compared to a Tolkien book.
Not to mention that the only reason as to why MGS 4 is called a "movie" is because of it's big cutscene/gameplay ratio

I can't see why Torment would be compared to Tolkien (which I love BTW), other than it had swords and sorcery, as stylistically they are completely different. Maybe as an epic masterpiece I guess. As a video game its story is simply on a different plateau to anything else I've ever played. While a bit buggy, it holds up against any game on the market today.[QUOTE="st1ka"][QUOTE="g0ddyX"]
So you like your games, and we like our games, end of.
Whichever game meant more to you on a plotwise level, then i guess thats your game.
But not everyone has played planescape torment or even heard of it.
Mgs is a highly rated and popular series. So much that it gets called a 'movie', no other game is called that, hence why mgs is the best story game.blue_hazy_basic

I haven't played Planescape: Torment, but first off even if it's plot is better, that still doesn't change the fact that MGS excels in a number of diferent categories, story, production values, soundtrack, gameplay, characters, boss fights, graphics. MGS is as good of a candidate as any other top franchise for the best of the best. Ofc this will always be subjective. And jugding but metacritic MGS1 came out 1 year earlier and has a 94 while Planescape: Torment has a 91, and if I read correctly Planescape: Torment is a rpg? The fact that MGS an action/stealth game pulls off such an amazing storyline is very impressive, there are plenty of rpg's with great plot's, but action/stealth games? I can't even remember any atm.Eddie-Vedder
I agree that the greatest gaming series of all time is subjective which makes this whole thread an instant fail. As for the storyline i personally don't think that metal gear solid has a good story line.
I agree that it could be seen as a strong candidate for many people.... but not by me

I guess that that means that all those games are naturally better then MGS4 seeing how their scores are either equal or higher, right? Let's not forget that Halo as a series has accomplished this in a market absolutely over saturated with the genre.

I never said that, I said it was subjective, what you could have gotten out of my post is the Halo franchise may also be a rightfull candidadte for the best of the best, but imo they shouldn't even be compared, one's famous for it's SP the other's famous for it's MP. You really missed out. If you ever, ever have the opportunity to get your hands on a copy, I very, very strongly suggest you take advantage of said opportunity. The game's writing is just so well done, the world so fleshed out, that it quickly became one of my favorites as I started playing it, surpassing pretty much any other RPG I'd ever played (and I've played more than my share).[QUOTE="st1ka"][QUOTE="thepwninator"] :lol:So true. Metal Gear Solid is not a single game, but a series that spans over multiple gens ;) And I'd have to say MGS is pretty damn good and deserves to be at least within the top 10 series of all time.
It's no contest. Each game has amazing graphics, amazing story, amazing gameplay and the best and most clever boss battles in the histroy of gaming. Metal Gear solid 4 And Metal Gear Solid Subsistance are the greatest games ever imo. You can keep your Gears of war, Zelda's, Half life's none of them touch Kojima's masterpieces.
noone even agrees with u how do u feel? i agree R&C was greatHalf-Life is by far a superior series.InternetKrakenA series with two games and two episodic sequels? I honestly don't even look at HL as a series: more of a game with a sequel, not a brand on its own.
