A good friend of mine works in a big videogame shop chain, and, lucky him, already had the time to try both version extensively.

Now, I actually hate him, because he waved the game (both the normal version and the LE) in front of my sorry nose, and refused to sell me a copy, making me very very sad.
To earn my forgiveness for that unforgivable sin, he gave me quite an extensive report on the comparison between the two versions (both tested with HDMI cable connection):
We already know about the shorter loading time in the PS3 version, but that was a given, since the PS3 can use it's hard disk (and the guys at Rockstar recently complained about the lack of such possibility on the 360). In addition to that, while the PS3 version has a smooth framerate in every situation, the 360 version staggers quite visibly in some crowded situations, expecially when you turn your character around.
Finally, the lighting of the PS3 version is quite better than the 360 one, whose palette looks dull and colder in comparison.

Of course many will doubt this, and I wouldn't blame them, but the person that gave me this report is one of the most knowledgeable people i know oin the videogaming field, so I, for one, have no reason to doubt him. It all will be revealed in 3 days anyway.

Floppy_Jim

Interesting, sounds like the 360 version suffers from the same problems as Mass Effect. This could change the minds of dual console owners, I've already seen a couple of people who said they would switch their pre-order to the PS3 version.

honestly - who the hell would do that? who would sacrifice the exclusive DLC for a slightly sharper more vibrant image -- two things that can be altered by tv settings? it makes NO sense.

unless you really really love dual shock it's just silly to get the PS3 version IMO if you own a PS3 and a 360. especially if you're a hardcore GTA fan.

I have it on the 360, and there is no lag when you turn around and such. As for the pop-in, it's not that bad, and more or less unnoticable for the most part. It's nothing like what you find in ME or GeoW

Maybe they prefer the controller or maybe they weren't gonna buy the exclusive content in the first place???

Or maybe they just choose to. Is it really hurting you? Don't worry about what other people do and just enjoy the game.

And just because you own the Xbox 360 version does not automatically make you a hardcore GTA fan. I think were all hardcore GTA fans here.

Dante2710

The framerate is fine, and there is only one main loadtime... which is when you first load the game up. Aside from that, not a big deal. Quite frankly, this is one of the best 360 games I have played, in terms of graphical quality and performance. Unlike some other games that make it seem like it's pushing the 360 further then it can handle.

the game plays the same as the 360 version with slightly better graphics on the ps3 with 360 having more vibrant colorsParadiddleFill

Actually the PS3 seem to have more vibrant colors as well. The 360's palette seems duller.

stop making a snowball into a mountain. those minor graphics diffreneces arent enough to make alot of people change their minds over the 360 version which has exclusive DLC, custom soundtracks and the live communityParadiddleFill

The live "community" being an upside is quite debatable. I, for one, am not one bit fond of the 14 year old squeakers cscreaming to the top of their lungs on Live. And I bet the M rating won't stop them.

The graphical edge might be balanced by the DLC on this particular game, but it has a quite deeper meaning in general. GTA4 pushes the envelope more than most other games in terms of juice needed. While graphical prowess is part of the power of a console, DLC are just a commercial operation. GTA4 can easily be used as an example to silence the voices that multiplatform games are better on the 360. Where it counts, and when the envelope is pulled, it seems that PS3 wins, power-wise.

I actually pondered quite a lot if to get the 360 version due to the DLC, and in the end I concluded that it wasn't worth playing the game without HDMI (since I have a first generation 360 and uncle Bill decided to screw his early adopters to get his console out as fast as possible). In the end DLCs will come this fall, and there are LOTS of games slated to be released then. No way in hell i'm gonna go back to GTA4 when the DLCs come out.

i want to believe you, but you yourself dont know if your friend just pulled some crap out of his ass or if he really did notice those differenceslinkin_guy109

Actually, he's one of the most knowledgeable people i know on videogames, and I have no reason to doubt what he says (expecially since he's very neutral in the console war, and has always been), but I definately don't blame the ones that do :D It will all be released in 3 days anyway, so we won't have much to wait to see if he's right or not :D

So. IGN has reviewed it and gives the (admittedly by them) slight visual edge to the PS3. Says the framerate is more stable & the pop-in, if there is any, is less noticeable on the PS3. So the PS3 gets the visual edge.

Meanwhile, the 360 gets to boast its episodic content... although not until later in the year.

Logically, that means that neither side gets a coup de grace victory, and obviously it's a ten on either platform. Still, I can't shake the feeling that fanboys of all types are going to continue to argue ownage over both points for months. Meanwhile, to everyone with a brain - enjoy the game! I know I'm way more pumped for it now than I have been for a long time.

Yeah and this is one of the few times where the PS3 version of a multiplat is clearly superior, but still, people just won't accept it!

As I said, the 360 version seems to have similar issues to Mass Effect. The loading times and frame-rate were horribly annoying in that game and I don't want to experience the same crap in GTA 4.

I'd say it would be hard to say if the framerate is up to par without having tried both versions extensively. I'm pretty sure it looks pretty fine if one looks just one version. The differences, though, can be spotted much easier by trying both.

And how is that strange? :D

I had to deal with fanboys since the age of Nintendo vs Sega and Sinclair vs Commodore, they won't accept a superior element in a competing console even if it was slapped right in front of their nose. Can't blame them for not accepting something that's far from proved at least until three more days pass.

Nothing to do about it anyway. They're part of the gaming folklore after all :D

lets not go that far the ps3 version is slightly better graphically and thats it, if the ps3 was the superior version then ign wouldent of given the xbox 360 a 10 in graphics. The 360 version still has exclusive DLC, ingame soundtrack and the live community. It just depends on you would you rather have a game with more content or a game with slightly better graphics

Fact is that DLC say absolutely nothing on the power of a console. Better graphics on a game that does push the envelop quite a lot, on the contrary, say a lot about it.

And what it says, is that the more software houses learn to work effectively on the PS3, the more the console shows that it has at leasta bit more juice than the rival.

On a ".1" scale from 1 to 10, what would you give the game? I'm eager to get some non-professional insight. :D

both games handle the game very well and that says how powerful each console really is

Ahah yeah, normally yes, but that friend of mine is kind of crazy (in a good way, from a gamers standpoint), I'll just say that he has more than 80 consoles from the time of the intellevision to now. I'm quite the collector, but he puts me completely to shame.

And what it says, is that the more software houses learn to work effectively on the PS3, the more the console shows that it has at leasta bit more juice than the rival.

It all goes back on who or what you decide to believe. From my info, it's not just pop ins, but also a duller palette and worse framerate in crowded situations. We'll see.

[QUOTE="Dante2710"] less textures pop ins and shorter loading times isnt enough to change a person`s choice when it comes to buying such a huge game.....but this is my opinion...and who the helll would buy both and actually play each version side by side? :| what a waste of time....i only expect video game reviewers to do this
Abriael

Ahah yeah, normally yes, but that friend of mine is kind of crazy (in a good way, from a gamers standpoint), I'll just say that he has more than 80 consoles from the time of the intellevision to now. I'm quite the collector, but he puts me completely to shame.

Yeah and this is one of the few times where the PS3 version of a multiplat is clearly superior, but still, people just won't accept it!

As I said, the 360 version seems to have similar issues to Mass Effect. The loading times and frame-rate were horribly annoying in that game and I don't want to experience the same crap in GTA 4.

lets not go that far the ps3 version is slightly better graphically and thats it, if the ps3 was the superior version then ign wouldent of given the xbox 360 a 10 in graphics. The 360 version still has exclusive DLC, ingame soundtrack and the live community. It just depends on you would you rather have a game with more content or a game with slightly better graphics

It's not just slightly better graphics though, it's shorter loading times, better frame rate and less pop-in. It's all down to personal preference I guess, but loading times and poor frame rate annoy me (Mass Effect for example) and I find the PS3 controller better for this type of game.

I wouldn't really say the Live community is a big factor for me, there's going to be a ton of people online on the PS3 version as well.

I think were all hardcore GTA fans here.

hayato_

did you not read the whole post? y'know the part where I say 'unless you really like dualshock' or are you just lookin for a fight?

and wtf if wrong with you assuming it really bothers me - i'm just speaking my opinion, don't like it keep walking.

and i'm a manticore, and a hardcore gta fan - i'm getting the 360 version because it's the only one with the exclusive DLC that is getting hyped to hell. wth would i pick the PS3 version and miss out on that???

it ain't that complicated - i couldn't care less what others do, i just don't get why people would make that call though given the chance to get either, unless.. like i said... they really love dualshock..

wow, now you're just lying. no review has mentioned anything about framerates - and my mate that got his ps3 version early was complaining about frame issues when lots of stuff is going on, so it appears that isn't just a 360 issue if you aren't totally making things up and can back up your talk.

Gonna put at least a couple hundred hours into this game. Hand comfort is paramount for me in this situation (and my Xbox 360 doesn't have ze HDMI slot) and I'm not really a big online gamer. If, in a year's time, both DLCs for GTAIV are out and there is no hope for DLC on the PS3, then I'll probably pick-up a cheapo copy for my Xbox 360.

Dante2710

Not having a problem with the framerate doesn't mean it's 60 constant FPS (the eye isn't particularly bothered by it unless it goes below 25). as much as i LOVE LO to death it does have a bit of framerate issues.

About the color, the brilliance of the palette depends a lot on the lighting engine, and it's performance depends a lot on the console's power. It didn't surprise me at all when i heard that the 360 one looked duller. To move all the stuff that it's on the screen, while keeping a seamless world on the 360 without streaming from the HD, rockstar HAD to cut somewhere, the matter is just to find where.

Past GTA titles have had mild-to-serious framerate issues and technical glitches, because the games were trying to do far more than the PlayStation 2 could handle. While GTA IV is pushing the PS3 and 360 to the limit, it also runs amazingly well. Sure, there are framerate hitches here and there and (particularly on 360) there is some texture pop-in, but it actually runs better than I expected. That a game with great AI, an awesome physics engine and a detailed open world runs so well and with such short load times is a technical marvel. For that, I can forgive framerate issues and some noticeable aliasing.

I'm pretty sure the IGN review said that the 360 version had more vibrant colours too.

True, texture pop-in didn't stop Uncharted and GeOW from looking fantastic. Still, these minor flaws on the 360 version could have been avoided if Microsoft had chosen to give the 360 a standard hard drive.

I have to say, I find it a little ironic how they spent $50 mil on this game, only to have their version turn out (slightly) inferior because of that silly hard drive decision. Silly, silly Microsoft......

As far as my comparisons, im playing on a Samsung 46" 720p DLP and my friend is playing on a Vizio 42" 1080p LCD. Both are hooked up through HDMI, i have expanded setting(X360) & he has RGB(PS3). Unless his TV is a POS(lol), we both agreed that we saw no differences. Those blur effects i mentioned are because during the day the sun hits certain objects & things look a lil blurry. *shrug* Unless you've got a real hard ** for looking for differences, i don't think people are going to notice any. That's just my opinion.

I'm not sure about the time zones but if it's 7pm EST in 24 minutes then yes.
