Straight from IGNWhile GTA IV is pushing the PS3 and 360 to the limit, it also runs amazingly well. Sure, there are framerate hitches here and there and (particularly on 360) there is some texture pop-in, but it actually runs better than I expected. That a game with great AI, an awesome physics engine and a detailed open world runs so well and with such short load times is a technical marvel. For that, I can forgive framerate issues and some noticeable aliasing.

For those wanting to know which version looks better, the edge goes to the PS3. The textures and framerate are comparable, but the PS3 has far less pop-in. The 360 has richer colors, but the PS3 has better anti-aliasing making it look a little cleaner. Because GTA IV can preload onto the PS3 hard drive, the in-game loads are faster. Don't worry Xbox owners, the load times are rarely more than 30 seconds and don't occur very often. The slight visual edge goes to PS3, but the 360 is no slouch. Either version will do you proud.

IGN says the framerate issues are WORSE on the 360

sorry mate, i trust kotaku above IGN. kotaku aren't tied in to big business and aren't sponsored by big box companies - in fact they often get in trouble with execs from devhouses and console manufacturers. i'll take their word over ign any day of the week.

Cows- You get the slightly superior version

Lems- You get the DLC

Now can everyone stop arguing about the differences between the 2 versions and just talk about the game itself?

Floppy_Jim

when i see a review that puts one over the other in terms of score i'll agree - but as it stands we're getting differing opinions from nearly every outlet, and most concede the difference and choice is down to personal preference.. hardly think that constituts a 'slightly superior' version.

bingo, if the differences really mattered, the scores would show it. so far identical scores equal identical game.

not a lemming, i own every console + a gaming PC. i'm picking based on the content and apparent superior framerate on the 360.. i don't think personal preference counts as damage control, lmao.

if i read somewhere i trusted that the ps3 was clearly better i'd buy it in a heartbeat.

This is exactly why I hate GS's review system. GTAIV is in my mind far and away superior to 9.5 games like Halo 3 or Crysis but at the same time it's not perfect so giving it a 10 is a bit much I think. I think 9.9 or 9.8 really conveys the idea of near-perfection.

you need to read more reviews. a lot of them say that while they gave it a 10, it is not because it is perfect. ign and a few others said why.

IGN wasn't talking about framerate problems on the 360, but talking about the texture pop-ins. The 'and' seperates the two. If they were talking about framerates problems on the 360 the '(particularly on 360)' would be before the 'and'

I also hope nobody in here is looking to make their decision as to which version of GTA to buy based upon the Gamespot review. You know how the Gamespot reviews will roll.......very unconfrontational and "yadda yadda this version = that version and something about how they're both great games". That's how it will be. Expect a 9.5 also is my opinion

they will take akin to mass effect, bioshock, and others and give it a 9 or even less, wait and see. gamespot is almost worthless for reviews anymore.

I dont trust anybody at this point, infact the reviews are so all over the place it is ridiculous, some say 360 has more pop in, others dont mention, some say PS3 suffers from low FPS, others say 360 does.

So many inconsistencies, it's not even worth quoting the reviews because each reviewers eyes are telling a different story.

What is known though, is that the game runs suprisingly well on both systems, it looks great, with very few load times, and it's getting 10/10 everywhere, which in my opinion is fantastic, and each version is going to be amazing.

yep it looks like the ps3 version is better as far as the reviews go so far :)

Bren128

lol - wut? neither is different enough to make a single point difference in scores.. but if you ask me framerate is more important than pop-up, and i think many will agree.. so depending on your opinion the 360 looks to be the lead so far... imo.

um several websites have said the ps3 has the better version that LOOKS better and has less popin according to ign. why are you guys trying to deny that the ps3 version is better when most of the reviews are saying its slightly better? your getting your DLC so quit whining

Slightly better isn't anything to brag about and from the looks of the reviews it's pretty much a toss up. Everybody wins. The PS3 version doesn't have any edge over the 360 version and vice versa. It's a truly ignorant argument that I wish people from both sides should shut up about.

It's a matter of what is less of an annoyance to you. Nobody should be bragging.

I think the FPS/pop-in issues are so minimal that most review outlets omit it from their reviews. The games won't have any noticeable differences.

Assuming you are not playing the game 1m away from the TV screen with a magnifying glass, I'd say both versions are pretty much identical.

slighty better visuals ps3, achievements and dlc 360, I dont see what the problem is here, 360/PS3 owners enjoy what is most likely the game of the year and a game that might finally overthrow OOT on metacritic

well, to each his own i guess. i respect your opinion, i just think that 10s are ok if the game transcends and revolutionizes the genre it is in, not meaning it is perfect, just the best of that type.

IGN

+1 PS3

Final Thoughts
If this were a personal decision, I'd have chosen the PlayStation 3 edition, mostly based on my preference for the DualShock controller and the performance edge.

Kotaku

+2 PS3 (and that's from Kotaku....which, we all know how much they love Sony/PS3  )

While the PS3 and 360 versions of the game are functionally identical, the PS3's visuals sport noticeably smoother edges, along with a warmer color palette that makes everything look slightly more realistic

GamesRadar

+3 PS3........ for the tri-fecta.

Does anyone know if there will be easy-to-enter cheats like in the previous games? The GTA series is the only series IMO where entering cheat codes isn't lame. You can't say entering the jet pack code to get on top of the mountain on san andreas just to drive a car off of it then repeating it, wasnt fun. =P

Remember when GS said for a con of Metroid Prime 3 that its controls were too good. GTA IV will probably be too good so it'll get a 9.

Yeah, I've only read that the PS3 version performs better. Where are people getting that 360 has a better framerate from? Technically, the PS3 is the better version at the moment. Whenever we learn what the DLC is for 360, I suppose the debate can start once again.

Im wondering, how is DLC going make the 360 version sell more if its not advertised? (Correct me if im wrong, But I have seen no ads in stores or on TV for DLC) If the casuals dont know of any DLC then I would assume they would get the PS3 version, since they are firmiliar with the PS Brand and playing GTA on the PS2 and then thers the RROD which would turn them off of the 360 perhaps.

While the PS3 and 360 versions of the game are functionally identical, the PS3's visuals sport noticeably smoother edges, along with a warmer color palette that makes everything look slightly more realistic

GamesRadar

+3 PS3........ for the tri-fecta.

DLC

360 + 1

Custom soundtracks

360 +2

more vibrant colors

360 +3

each has its pros and cons

You're actually going to listen to the custom soundtracks outside of the game instead of listening to the in-game stuff? I would never do that (but to each his own.... Anyways Sony gets in-game XMB in summer, ). Also, every place I've read have said colors are more realistic on PS3

Whatever, I'm not gonna convice you. I've already made my choice and so have most people in this thread.

For those wanting to know which version looks better, the edge goes to the PS3. The textures and framerate are comparable, but the PS3 has far less pop-in. The 360 has richer colors, but the PS3 has better anti-aliasing making it look a little cleaner. Because GTA IV can preload onto the PS3 hard drive, the in-game loads are faster

+1 PS3

Final Thoughts
If this were a personal decision, I'd have chosen the PlayStation 3 edition, mostly based on my preference for the DualShock controller and the performance edge.

just ignore them, its the same 2-3 cows that just keep cherry picking quote from reviews.. i mean the kotaku one they're just picking out mcwhertors personal preference at the end even though the review cleary states the 360 has slight better fps but suffers from pop-in.. in fact nearly every one of the reviews have equal numbers of pros and cons for both sides.

UNTIL either version outscores the other these differences are minimal, and there are enough on each side to call this a draw more or less. if they were significant enough one version would have outscored the other - hasn't happened. until it does it's just fanboys trying to claim pwnage while completely ignoring that both are scoring 10s all over the place.

both will be excellent, it'll come down to preference re: what you prefer (fps over pop-in, dualshock over 360 pad, vibrancy over sharpness). that's it - that's all.

It's a no-brainer for me which version to buy.

The PS3 version, I just couldnt see myself playing a GTA game on my clunky 360 controller. Playing the GTA series on the standard playstation controller just grows on ya. I think GTAIV will come with plenty of game without needing to buy DLC.

Don't worry Xbox owners, the load times are rarely more than 30 seconds and don't occur very often. The slight visual edge goes to PS3, but the 360 is no slouch. Either version will do you proud.

IGN says the framerate issues are WORSE on the 360

Nowhere in any of those Quotes does it say that the 360 versions Framerate isn't as good as the PS3 version.

I also made that mistake, they're actually saying the 360 version has worse texture pop-in, they aren't reffering to the framerate.

that is how it would appear if someone had selective reading skills and didn't account for the cons and pros for both sides.. yes indeed.

Now I'm trying to get him to buy a 360 so we can play together :D

The thing said 'The slight visual edge goes to the PS3'

It's slight, but what does that have to do with selective reading skills? Sheesh...it's the actual article.

And 'framerate hithces here and there (especially on the 360)'
