[QUOTE="16bitkevin"]How the hell can you say HL2 wasn't wasn't revolutionary? Physics were just eye-candy until Half-Life 2 came along. Don't forget the incredibly realistic lip-synching and face posing that still hold up to be one of the best today. MIYAMOTOnext007

I know. I said both of those. :? And about the lip-synching. That is evolutionary, not revolutionary.

i agree with the physics. I said that.

No, you said the physics part was just evoulutionary also.

i actually didnt say what I though the physics in HL2 was. I did for the voice-acting, though :P

I'm not saying HL2 was revolutionary at all. I was stating those because you said the only thing HL2 really did was bring in the gravity gun._en1gma_

the only other thing you said was professional voice acting, which Halo 2 has. you shouldve mentioned the lip-synching at least. because that is something hl2 did better than everything else. oh and this whole argument was supposed to be about revolutionary concepts - you just changed the topic a bit

go read my post above

I did and lost some brain cells in the process.

God!! You are a grochy and arogant person!!! (now your going to say how I didn't contribute at all to the topic or that this was a bad argument by me)

im sorry. i seriously could not understand where he was going with his post and i could barely even read it to be honest....

lol

I just listed a couple of things HL2 did that part 1 didn't.Ok i will list them again

1.Physics(I am not saying they invented physics, but they made the standard everyone has to catch up to.)

2.vehicles

3.gravity gun, pulse rifle, and the the being able to control antlions(which is a nice addition to gameplay)

4.lip syncing

5.being able to control rebel forces at some point of the gm.

I know. Seriously though your going to have to drop 3k in order to play it on medium settings at best.

pff what are you talking about. i dropped 2k down a week ago and I can run this badboy at high settings with an average resolution. running steam, however, that became a problem.

Ironic like Halo took from Tribes & UT? Isnt that the same? .... difference is Halo hasnt improved on anything now since day 1, and never will.

_en1gma_

open ended spaces and vehicles? Good. Then Half life was a ripoff of doom. Closed spaces and guns! If you have ever played Halo (I'm starting to doubt so) you'd see that halo did only took very basic concepts.

Wait what? CoD2?? Im not talking about simple health regeneration...

Besides, Half-Life is our Messiah, Half-Life 2 was the most enriching FPS of all time, I cant see it being any other way, nothing has ever challenged it , well of recent years, Systemshock back in the day though.

Meu2k7

Um, "simple health regeneration" is the health system of Halo 2, and for all practical purposes, Halo 1 (which did have an energy bar, but frankly was hardly a factor).

1) Doom? Oh come one, thats jsut grasping for straws, doom was the very basic of the FPS Genre, Half-life 1 was indoor & outdoor corridors just like Halo CE.

2) I bet your thinking when it says "KILLING SPREE" ect that Halo invented that even right? :I

3) Played Halo? I dont care what you believe, if I'd cared even the slightest id just take a quick picture of my Halo 1/2 cases right there to show , but I just dont.

Q2)

4) Halo's health regeneration is ridiculously fast though, I havnt seen a game do that since.

5) Ok lets move on from Halo 1 / Half Life 1. What about the sequals ... tell me, what did Halo 2 do ? ( I bet the only real anwser you can possible give is Online improvement)

1) Indoor-outdoor corridors was never mentioned in the argument. So that made no contribution whatsoever.

2) Umm. No. :? Once again. Pointless//

3) From the sounds of it, you BARELY event touched playing Halo.

4) Actually, the recharging shields of Halo CE were really slow...ESPECIALLY on legendary. - Contributing to the fact that it sounds like you never played Halo. Halo 2 changed the system a lot by making it much more rapid but eliminating much of the health factor.

5) Highjacking and matchmaking are all I can think of. Halo 2 changed drastically from Halo CE and it's single player I admit is not even notable. But Halo 2 aside, all HL2 did that was new was the gravity gun, unless you can tell me otherwise.

and with Halo 3, there are the one-button items which COMPLETELY changes how the game is played. and probably more unannounced things that really dont matter.

Ummm....Half-life 2 pretty much put a whole dimension of gaming on the map PHYSICS!!!!!!!!!!! After HL2 every shooter started to try to have good physics. Also HL2 brought in some amazing voice acting and dialogue that hadn't been seen in games at such a professional level before.

so...half-life 2 was the first game with physics? no, but it made somewhat more use with it by using the gravity gun on statuc objects in the level (which i said).

and other games have good voice acting and make good use of it with a well-presented story.

having "professional" dialogue sounds more like an evolution

Oh my bad! I thought you had said the physics was just evolutionary. But your right, you didn't say it. sorry:oops:

well i guess you can just get some scotch tape (runs to be about 100 bucks for the amount of tape you need) and tape the fan onto the gpu. it should bump out some of the performance issues you'll get from overclocking the 9600.

which runs to about 800 dollars tops.

As a full game, halo kills it, and as multiplayer, these 2 are in depth, the 2 most different kinds of FPS's.

[QUOTE="RawDeal_basic"]Playing Halo is like playing Pong compared to Half-Life, and Half-Life 2. Nevermind CS. But yeah, Halo is a good for a console FPS._en1gma_

halo ce is extremely superior to half-life 1 + cs in every way...

the story is superior by a longshot. the atmosphere is superior. the actually gameplay is much more fun and innovative and has much more depth to it. the graphics are about leveled in comparison for their time.

im sorry, but HL1 is a cookie cutter FPS in comparison to Halo CE.

comparing a game from 1998 to a game from 2001

[QUOTE="smokeydabear076"][QUOTE="Sneaky_Gopher"]Lawl. Yeah, mybe if someone had a PC that could run it.smokeydabear076

I know. Seriously though your going to have to drop 3k in order to play it on medium settings at best.

pff what are you talking about. i dropped 2k down a week ago and I can run this badboy at high settings with an average resolution. running steam, however, that became a problem.

Aww man looks like I wasted my money.

well i did add an extra fan to my 9600 pro to overclock it a bit. so that ran me an extra 300 bucks. no biggie there.

I got a fan from the store and left my case open with it blowing on it, maybe that is why I can't play CS on max. Looks like I will have to fork out $300.:( The main problem is that I have to constantly upgrade my pc every month in order to run this game at the same quality I did the previous month. PC gaming is so expensive.

well i guess you can just get some scotch tape (runs to be about 100 bucks for the amount of tape you need) and tape the fan onto the gpu. it should bump out some of the performance issues you'll get from overclocking the 9600.

which runs to about 800 dollars tops.

Thank you for your hardware advice, I would have spent even more of a fortune with out it.:D

Please take this to the "PC Hardware Discussion Forum" you guys. not all of us are professors and crap that can understand your extremely in-depth tecnical lingo!:P

Oh, I am so sorry that I have offended you mere mortal who knows so little.:P

 you dont have to rub your superiority in my face like that!

As a full game, halo kills it, and as multiplayer, these 2 are in depth, the 2 most different kinds of FPS's.kittykatz5k

Half life and counterstrike are like one.

Doom? Oh come one, thats jsut grasping for straws, doom was the very basic of the FPS Genre, Half-life 1 was indoor & outdoor corridors just like Halo CE.

I bet your thinking when it says "KILLING SPREE" ect that Halo invented that even right? :I

Played Halo? I dont care what you believe, if I'd cared even the slightest id just take a quick picture of my Halo 1/2 cases right there to show , but I just dont.

Q2)

Halo's health regeneration is ridiculously fast though, I havnt seen a game do that since.

Ok lets move on from Halo 1 / Half Life 1. What about the sequals ... tell me, what did Halo 2 do ? ( I bet the only real anwser you can possible give is Online improvement)

Meu2k7

I'm not the one grasping for straws. My doom comment was obviously facetious in order to note the ridiculousness of your claim. The "killing spree" voice is obviously not Halo's. Trust me, I'm no idiot or n00b. I've been playing network shooters since Doom, and shooters since I have memory.

As for your second comment... talk about grasping for straws here. So because Halo 1's time to recharge variable is set to a smaller amount, no game that took the exact same concept with the exact same implementation, just making it slightly slower, is completely original and different, is in any way related? Right. Under these circumstances, I have no option but say Halo is the most innovative game ever, since everything is just slightly different to any other game out there. All the weapons are brand new, the concept of moving at that speed and jumping at that height is completely new, and the grenade trajectory and delay is obviously revolutionary.

All other FPSs, of course, are equally revolutionary. What a wonderful world! All shooters side by side! Gordon Freeman enjoying equal status with Blake Stone! Crysis and Hour of Victory being equally innovative! Why should we all fight? We're all special in our own way! What joy!

Or, it's just an incredibly bad argument you have there.

As for Halo 2... online. Yeah, that's all it added. It kept the original formula, refined the gameplay (say what you will about the story and levels, the core gameplay was defined), and improved the graphics. It's a lesser game than the original in every respect... just like Half-Life 2 (in regard to Half Life 1).

I have both Halo games, 1 for the PC and 2 for the Xbox. Personally, I was horrendously underwhelmed, it was good but not up to the PC FPS benchmark in my opinion, I even enjoyed Timesplitters more for console FPS..... I thought Timsplitters was more playable and fun.

However, Halo will never be killed untill Bungie pull the plug. It's popularity is almost unmatched, although I always scratch my head and ask myself why after playing through Halo.

Am I the only person that thinks half life and halo are both great games? Is it really that hard to acknowledge..

Both games are on the PC and the xbox and both are the better game on their original system (According to gamespot reviews even).

It's not like a discussion like this would ever come to a conclusion. The double standards of everyone alone already kills it. For example I heard here that HL2 was revolutionary because it evolved physics a lot, but that's probably the same people that think halo 2 did nothing new. Point is, halo 2 actually innovated, as it introduced a completely new, and 2x better, online setup which will be improved in halo 3. From the other side there's of course also plenty of double standards (which have always been famed). We could just as well close this thread saying "opinions differ" and leave it at that.

Halo is the whole package. Counter-Strike is not a Halo killer.

And the game play is so different.

Still hilarious as to how hermits say there are plenty of FPSs on PC better than Halo.

Halo isn't THAT great, fanboys. I mean, sure, the game was good, multiplayer was awesome, but... I think the HALO killer was created long ago. Heck, Counter-Strike, an HL mod, is better in many ways.

Wow.....just wow.

Story - Halo had a generic sci-fi story, it was pretty much what I was expecting and it certainly wasn't unique, innovative or original. Half-Life wasn't all that fresh either but I think it was told much better. It really put you into the story as opposed to Halo which made you watch some pretty predictable cutscenes.

Atmosphere - I don't even know where to begin on that one. Half-Life destroys Halo when it comes to atmosphere

Gameplay more fun - you know, I'm not actually going to argue against this. One was quite a linear game with puzzles and platforming and a more story based approach, Halo was all about combat hence Combat Evolved :P. Both are very different and I'm sure it all depends on the persons taste, whether they want more story or more action. Halo having co-op is also a major boost for that game.

Graphics - I'd give this to Halo. They did come at different times as you implied, but Halo looked really great, had huge enviroments and some veyr impressive textures. Half-Life was a fuzzy mess. I didn't quite like the sterile look of Halo but overrall I'd still give thr graphics to that game. For the sequels it's a different story, even if you only compare the Xbox versions, but for the first games in the series Halo wins IMO.

Halo sucks

HL/CS do not

Yeah, his post was pretty idiotic, but I'd like to clean up a few things first.

Generic is thrown around Halo like everyone knows the true meaning of it. What do you mean "generic"? The fact that the human race, running away from a Covenant assault force, to stumble upon an ancient ringworld, racing to uncover its secrets only because the enemy is? Then to find out this planet is somehow linked with the human race by an ancient civilization; that it contained a parasitic lifeform both parties do not know about; to find out its a weapon of some sort, and to find out that this "weapon" was such in the most cynical sense possible? I doubt anyone here is a sci fi nut to know what is "generic" in the sci fi world. Yes, there are some parts of Halo that are "generic", but thats sci fi archetypes for you, and it's what defines the genre.

Both had different types of atmosphere. Half Life was essentially a first person survival horror. Suspense and tension was what it was built upon. Halo, on the other hand, put the bulk of its atmosphere in discovering an artifical ringworld with no real sentient life. You're exploring and fighting on someone else's territory that has remained untouched for who knows how long. It's in the vein of Myst. If you don't understand that sense of awe when adventuring through ancient history, you may be missing out.

There's just one fact that separates Halo and HL2/CS

Halo sucks

HL/CS do not

It's that simple.
