For a decade and a half, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time has been the de facto 'greatest game ever created;' it has been the highest rated game of all time on multipe websites, including this one. Review aggregators like Metacritic have Ocarina's score at a lofty, untouchable peak.

GameRankings, the industry standard website that aggregates reviews and ranks games according to aggregate scores, has had Ocarina at the top for as long as the site has been around; and though there was a brief period when Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Grand Theft Auto 4 were rated higher, as soon as they got more reviews in the mix, their scores came down.

But now Ocarina has been knocked from its perch. It is no longer the highest rated game of all time. Super Mario Galaxy is.

Greatest Game of All Time

Also worth noting is that: a) Super Mario Galaxy has more reviews, which make its accomplishmet that much more notable, and b) Nintendo has made the tree highest rated (best) games of all time.

Anyway, wha do you all think? How do you feel about this?

1. Pretty sure that the game industry cares more about MetaCritic than GameRankings.

2. Ocarina of Time is still the greatest game ever made (especially for it's time) regardless of a number.

3. The way GameRankings lets some reviews go after certain conditions are met is stupid.

4. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is better than the original anyway.

Did someone just review one of these games? Or did they delete one of the reviews?

With the exception of #2, I pretty much share these sentiments.

Not to knock on OoT or anything, but...well...Majora's Mask.

Zelda was reviewed when the reviewers still had some integrity while reviews these days aren't worth a crap. So Mario Galaxy being first now is irrelevant.

I can't agree with that. Though a great game, SMG2 feels like an expansion pack most of the time and doesn't have the same punch as the original. I think calling it Super Mario Galaxy: The Lost Levels would have made more sense.

I don't care what the "industry standard" website mumbojumbo is. The best games of all time is between Zelda OoT and Final Fantasy 7.

Mario Galaxy is very overrated. It's an 8 at best IMO, Rachet and Clank and LBP are the best platformers this gen.

While I definitely agree that Ratchet & Clank is the only platformer on Mario's level I do not think SMG1&2 are overrated.

Of course that game would have more reviews, when Ocarina of Time came out, the internet was not even close to it was back when Galaxy came out.

And who cares about gamerankings, I thought that site died years ago

I was hoping for something like Mario 64 but bigger and better. On a more grand scale, Mario Galaxy I felt lacking, it was also too easy and short. I was disappointed with it, but still had a great time. I even think Mario Sunshine was better, a game I feel is very underrated.

But this being SW you can't say anything subjective about a game without them calling you a troll or a fanboy.

It doesn't have the punch because it's a sequel. That said, it is a better game in every way in terms of actual design.

In all seriousness , SMG is well deserving of that title.

Sometimes sequels have bigger punches than the prequel. Like I feel Sonic 3 (with or without the add-on) has a better punch than Sonic 1 and 2, Super Mario Bros 3 having a better punch than SMB1 (not fair to compare it to SMB2/Doki Doki Panic), and Tekken 3 having a better punch than Tekken 1 and 2.

Lol no. FF7 is certainly not the best game of all time in any circumstance. Games like Final Fantasy Tactics, Chrono Trigger, Vagrant Story, Xenoblade etc are all much better RPGs than Final Fantasy 7. Not on the Orcarina of Time hype train either. As for LBP and R&C being better than SMG?

Okay even if you use metacritic or game rankings for general comparision it is in NO WAY a good indication of the greatest game of all time.

And I'd say Halo is the greatest, but I'm a bit of a Halo fanboy. But you're a Ninty fanboy so I guess it's no different

I think people just say OOT is the best game ever to try and fit in and be cool, since most Zelda fans agree OOT is one of the worst games in the series.

It got amazing reviews because people were blown away by it's graphics, if they actually gave it a solid review, it would be a fair 8, the story is awful, gameplay is mediocre, framerate is terrible, it's full of bugs & glitches, controls were terrible, camera was terrible, it's LTTP in 3D when it comes down to it all, sound was awful (N64 limits might dismiss this), Hyrule was massive but empty, some of the temples were very poorly designed (Water Temeple, we all know this) can't skip dialogue & cut scenes, inventory was a massive pain.

Best game of all time for sure.

IMO I think Majora's Mask was better, but Ocarian was more memorable since it was the first time I saw such amazing scenery, Hyrule Field was jaw dropping when I first saw it.

Wind Waker is also an amazing Zelda I feel that is underappreciated.

I think people just say OOT is the best game ever to try and fit in and be cool, since most Zelda fans agree OOT is one of the worst games in the series.

It got amazing reviews because people were blown away by it's graphics, if they actually gave it a solid review, it would be a fair 8, the story is awful, gameplay is mediocre, framerate is terrible, it's full of bugs & glitches, controls were terrible, camera was terrible, it's LTTP in 3D when it comes down to it all, sound was awful (N64 limits might dismiss this) not to mention it aged like milk.

IMO I think Majora's Mask was better, but Ocarian was more memorable since it was the first time I saw such amazing scenery, Hyrule Field was jaw dropping when I first saw it.

Wind Waker is also an amazing Zelda I feel that is underappreciated.

MM & WW are miles better than OOT.

I can't agree with that. Though a great game, SMG2 feels like an expansion pack most of the time and doesn't have the same punch as the original. I think calling it Super Mario Galaxy: The Lost Levels would have made more sense.

It doesn't have the punch because it's a sequel. That said, it is a better game in every way in terms of actual design.

I did have one issue with SMG 2, personally: I thought some of the levels ended kind of abruptly. I also feel that the first game had better music.

Okay even if you use metacritic or game rankings for general comparision it is in NO WAY a good indication of the greatest game of all time.

And I'd say Halo is the greatest, but I'm a bit of a Halo fanboy. But you're a Ninty fanboy so I guess it's no different

OB-47

Personally, I think neither Super Mario Galaxy nor Ocarina of Time are the greatest games of all time, so hey :P

WHAT!

Okay it has to be a Ninty game though? Majora's mask maybe? That was my favourite Zelda

It is a Ninty game, yes. It's A Link to the Past, my favorite Zelda game, and according to me, the greatest game ever created. Every time I play a new game, I do so with the subconscious expectation of trying to relive the feeling I had when I played ALttP for the first time as an 8 year old.
