[QUOTE="Master_ShakeXXX"]True Story Don't even need a stupid bet to agree with that one. Upon recently playing through it again immensely, I'd have to agree as well. Or at the least, I'd place it right next to Majora's Mask, Yoshi's Island and Shock 2.F*ck the both of em. RE4 is the greatest.

Eh, I definitely love me some OoT but it never was close to being what I would consider the greatest game of all time, and seeing the Super Mario Galaxy games ranked that high is such a damn joke....
Why? I mean, I can possibly agree with SMG2, but why for SMG1?Eh, I definitely love me some OoT but it never was close to being what I would consider the greatest game of all time, and seeing the Super Mario Galaxy games ranked that high is such a damn joke....

[QUOTE="charizard1605"][QUOTE="g0ddyX"]*lists FF7* *talks about nostalgia* g0ddy, no one can take you seriously on anything you say about Nintendo. Like, ever. FF7 is still an incredibly well-designed game, whether or not you have a nostalgia hard-on for it.Exactly, and so is Ocarina of Time.
This. Can't really dispute it.
Majority of gamers would have had better gaming experiences elsewhere, offline and online.
Like, Team Fortress 2, Uncharted, Half Life 2, FF7, Gears, Mass Effect, Halo, MGS, Kotor, Portal, Resident Evil, Assassains Creed, Batman, COD, Max Payne etc etc.
Not to mention Mods, fan created and other viral stuff.
Nostalgia at its best, perhaps.DarkLink77
It hasn't been the greatest game of all time for a long while honestly. I'd say GTAIII dethroned it for certain, and plenty more since. Still amazing tho, and it's VERY rare for early 3D games to hold up as well as Ocarina does. locopatho
It's not even in my top 10 favorite games. I don't think the game has aged well.
But in the context "for its time" it would be hard to argue against OoT. That's the only meaningful way of determining a GOAT. Impact & expectations at the time of release.

False.
The only constant in this universe is that A Link to the Past is the greatest game of all time. The constancy of A Link to the Past's greatness actually puts a wrench in the Theory of Relativity, breaks it down, and has set science back by several hundred years. This is fact. No in fact string theory debunks that and Steven Hawkins told me so it's 100% solid.lolno[QUOTE="themajormayor"]Doom aged better. PannicAtack
Actually it aged quite well, on the PC. The framerate is fluid and so are the m/kb controls (wasd + mouse still is relevent, so control wise it hasn't aged one second). At Nightmare difficulty, it's a fun, adrenaline pumping experience. Never mind mods, which makes the game practically ageless.
And ofcourse, the double barreled shotgun is a ridiculously entertaining weapon to use.

Those don't make the level design in the game any less convoluted, or the encounter design less predictable. It's still a fun game, but it has aged a fair amount. Let's face it.

In terms of ageing, I find most games of that era ugly, outdated and not fun. Even an absolute cIassic like Goldeneye 64 is today ugly and poorly controlled and beaten in every way by pretty much any random ass 7/10 FPS on 360. I don't have too much of a rose tint in my glasses, unlike a hell of a lot of nostalgia addled folks, I actually have my N64 still hooked up and play it from time to time :P Even taking that into account, Ocarina still holds up for me. The graphics are pretty and varied (low res textures are my only problem there), music is great, camera and controls are fluid and precise, gameplay is obviously still killer. And no endless loading or silly cutscenes (cough PS1 games cough :P). There are many better games since but for me Ocarina has achieved the "timeless" factor that so few games achieve: Ocarina can be (and has) been bettered, but it will never be bad or irrelevant. As for the "for it's time" context, I disagree, I think it's pointless and pretentious to call something the greatest cos of it's influence/ "importance". Pong is probably more "important" then say, Arkham Asylum. I know which game I'd rather play tho ;)Those don't make the level design in the game any less convoluted, or the encounter design less predictable.

That is true, i forgot about a good chunk of the levels being needlessly convoluted.
Werid how I don't like them at all xD There were good Marios and Zelda, but I really never got into the popular ones

I said expectations [of gamers] & impact, the latter meaning GOTY everywhere, 10/10-fest, people going nuts over how incredible it is, that sort of thing. Basically the game's critical and mass market reception. How people reacted at the time of release.
Very few games are on the level of OoT in that respect. That's the only meaningful way of determining a collective GOAT, as far as I can see. I don't agree, you don't have to either, but collectively, we need to come to a conclusion somehow. And the only way we can reach a meaningful consensus is if we consider every game in the context "for its time". Also being revolutionary in that it helped define 3D gaming as we know it has to count for something aswell.
OoT wouldn't come close to my top 10 list, heck probably top 20, but putting my subjective opinion aside, then I see OoT as a very strong contender for the collective GOAT, if we go by the metric I described.
If you have a different suggestion of how we can crown a collective GOAT I'm all ears.

Still think Link's Awakening is the best game in the series, mostly because of the story and music.

That's only how it's first recieved though, when "Greatest of all Time" really needs a longer term view.
GTA4 for example was massive in reviews and awards but after a while people cooled off and many found it less fun in the end then San Andreas.
Another issue is that doing something first doesn't mean you did it best. Using my example of Goldeneye 64, that was one of the first big console FPS games, it was brilliant for it's time, great scores, everyone adored it, and it has a huge nostalgic following that love it to this day. But it's still a worse game then pretty much any modern FPS. A game with little innovation/good but not insane scores like a COD sequel is a still a much better game then Goldeneye, putting them side by side. So I don't see how we could consider the worse game to be "Greater" then a better game, purely from impact.
It'd be like crowning the Wright Brothers plane the greatest ever because it had so much innovation and impact. When a modern jet is obviously better in every way.
Also wouldn't Mario 64 be a better contender for creating a lot of control/camera standards, rather then Ocarina?
