It's not arrogant, but it really got to me when Bill Gates commented on Viva Pinata being a "girl's games."

Yeah thanks Bill. Just keep on insulting your first party games. >_>

I think you are wrong. the worst is

Sony-"Next gen starts when we say it does."

That is arrogant, as it is foolish.

Mass_Effect

yeah and to say that they will sell 1 billion is not arrogant:roll:

Fanboy

Please tell me how they said they will sell 1 billion systems?

He said  "We will reach 1 billion consumers" Then the bald guy said " This gen a billion people will play our

games"

So you have to buy an Xbox 360 to play one of the games?

WTF how blind are you he talked about the xbox360 maybe if you try to open your eyes you will

se that a xbox360 are standing next to him.

You don't get it yet do you? Take your time

You must be the fanboys Bill Oreilly.

"With 360 we want to sell a lot of consoles."  How many?

"With 360 we want to sell millions of consoles."  Well the first Xbox did that.

"With 360, we want to sell a billion consoles."  Wow, I guess Microsoft wants to sell a lot of consoles.

[QUOTE="WeeWeeJumbo"][QUOTE="shungokustasu"]It's a Xbox360 keynote...At the end he did say he wanted the 'world' to be gamers. Seriously, I applaud your fight in this, but the claim in itself it just awful. Let's have a realistic goal please like: 4D gaming, Dual-1080p, 120fps. That's stuff is realistic.shungokustasu

Suppose we take the number of people who have played an SNES game. I hope you would agree that all people who have played at least one SNES game were "reached" by SNES.

Now suppose we take the number of people who bought an SNES--not the people who played their friend's SNES, or their brother's SNES, or who played an SNES demo unit at Wal-Mart, but the people who owned one for themselves. Can you agree that this second number must be much smaller than the first? Well, that's the difference between what the keynote speakers actually said and what you are trying to pretend they said. For what it's worth, I don't applaud your fight in this, because it's dishonest.

Dishonest? Wow... Why would you go to E3, and say I want 1 billion people to play our games? Why was that a significant part of your conference? Why would a PR rep of microsoft talk about 'reaching' not in terms of sales? I'm sure 1 billion people have been reach by communication and visuals on any popular console. So, why was it importing to address it? There is only one answer to that. He meant sales. The Sales PR reprensentitive of MS doesn't talk so you can hear him. He talks so he can sale you something. How was that for dishonesty?

J. Allard isn't a MS sales rep and never has been. He is however, corporate vice president of Design and Development. Also there is nothing wrong with trying to "reach" a billion customers. I'm sure all large companies aspire to something like this. Bringing up something this old just smacks of cow desperation and should be laughed at.

Remember that E3 is, or was, a place where publishers and producers meet with buyers (retailers) to explain why these retailers should purchase large orders of new gaming hardware and software.  MS is not the industry leader in the console market; last generation, it competed with Nintendo for second place.  So exposure is actually a big issue for MS--MS' big goal at this time does have to be getting people to try its hardware.  Look at its slogan--"Jump In;" look at its marketing campaigns, which don't try to portray 360 as some elite hardcore system (like PS3 is marketed to be) but as a console for everybody.  You've seen the commercials, right?

Well, it's very important for MS to convince retailers at an event like E3 that lots of people will be exposed to it.  Lots of people will play games on it, lots of people will watch movies on it, lots of people will watch IPTV on it.  If a billion people are exposed in this way to its use, some large number of them may decide to buy it.  If they were trying to say that they projected a billion units sold, why would they very carefully avoid saying that?  There's no reason, and that makes sense, because they weren't trying to say they would sell a billion units.  They were saying they would reach a billion consumers.  Wouldn't you say that many more people have been reached by PS2, than have bought a PS2 for themselves?

I agree. Sony introduced games to people that wouldn't have played them beforehand, which is obviously very good. Whilst Nintendo wants to make quality games, they wouldn't be making games if they weren't making loads of money at the same time. Its alright to say that MS want loads of money, but when people say it as if its only MS after money it really annoys me

He said reach 1 billion consumers...not sell a billion consoles.

Reach could mean you invite four friends over to your house and play Halo 3 on your 360 :|

300 million people live in America :| not even 1 billion people live in Europe, and the XBOX brand is not popular there :|

Sony's vision is to make gaming better... why?  Because it makes you happy?  Or do you think it has more to do with selling units?

Hey, did adding motion sensitivity to the Sixaxis have more to do with making gaming better, or removing an exclusive bullet-point from a competitor?

Do you suppose removing rumble had more to do with making gaming better, or avoiding an expensive settlement with Immersion?

Do you suppose delaying the PS3 a whole year in most of the world had more to do with making gaming better, or cementing Sony's lead in the next-gen DVD race?

If you think Sony does anything at all for the sake of your enjoyment of video games alone, you're delusional; just like MS, and just like every single multinational corporation that has ever existed, Sony's goal is to separate you from your money, in the most reliable and cost effective ways it can.

Agreed to this with another poster. If you going to take my money, make it worthwhile. I'm still waiting for MS to bring someting innovative to gaming. Why should I pick MS over PS when MS is just doing the same thing PS brand is know for? This is why MS will lose this gen. They have nothing to pull the PS fan away from Sony.

I really don't care.

It was stupid when it was said, and afterwards I had a good laugh, and I didn't think about it anymore until some cow had the nerve to make a thread about MS making a ridiculous comment when Sony's got plenty of stupid comments documented. So much in fact that people have been begging them to shut up. Phil Harrison, anyone?

Stupid arrogant comments are part of the reason Sony is in such a precarious postion right now. So really this is just one big self-ownage thread for any cows involved.

It's about sales, Isn't it?

No! The comment you quoted is about bring innovation to gaming.

But the thread is about sales, so who went off topic?

[QUOTE="shungokustasu"][QUOTE="heretrix"] J. Allard isn't a MS sales rep and never has been. He is however, corporate vice president of Design and Development. Also there is nothing wrong with trying to "reach" a billion customers. I'm sure all large companies aspire to something like this. Bringing up something this old just smacks of cow desperation and should be laughed at. heretrix

What do you think about 4d and 120fps? that was around the same time this was said....Wait aren't you disappointed in the PS3 for not having those thing? Gee, I guess old news like that does stick...

It's ok to mock a Sony PR in a forum, but when a MS PR is mock it's embarssing? Do you see the contradiction?

With xbl anywhere and the inclusion of pc gamers its not that far of a stretch. He says this generation their goal is to have 1 billion people use their media/play their games. You people forget that the majority of you are usng MS media right now in one way or another

 I found this joke on the text article. And they said that the Xbox 360 will reach 1 billion people, I think they meant that 1 billion people will PLAY it, not BUY it.

[QUOTE="WeeWeeJumbo"][QUOTE="shungokustasu"] Now that you understand consumer buy things, How can you be a MS consumer? You know that people who buys MS products?

Again with the condescension, but again you are wrong.  Neither of the two speakers said, "we will have 1 billion MS consumers buying a 360," or anything really like that.  What they said was that they would "reach" 1 billion consumers.  Gaming consumers, media consumers, electronics consumers, could be any kind of consumers, really.  If you think about it, it's a very carefully-worded set of statements; they clearly avoid saying that they will sell 1 billion 360s, and they even avoid saying that the people who are exposed to 360 will all be playing games, by referring to it as "our media."

I get what you are saying, and its a great effort. I don't think you even need to argue the point because it is a lost cause. Don't try to teach subtlety with the English language to a bunch of Nimrod's, you may as well be talking to a wall.

Dude, MS said "want", i want a million dollars, I want a model to be my wife, will it happen, maybe, maybe no. But to use words out of context, when Sony said BS just as stupid, fails this thread.

Agreed to this with another poster. If you going to take my money, make it worthwhile. I'm still waiting for MS to bring someting innovative to gaming. Why should I pick MS over PS when MS is just doing the same thing PS brand is know for? This is why MS will lose this gen. They have nothing to pull the PS fan away from Sony.shungokustasu

I understand if the games that have appeared on MS consoles aren't to your liking; there's no accounting for personal taste.  But if MS hasn't brought anything new to the table, why are so many features, formerly seen in the console world only on MS consoles, now appearing or set to appear on the PS3?  PS3 has a hard drive, PS3 has a meaningful online community, now Sony seems set to mimic the Achievements system, and headsets, though incompletely implemented, are a possibility.  In the console world, all these features appeared first on MS hardware.  If they're not "worthwhile," why does Sony strive to include them?  Why are there so many legions of fans who have so many good things to say about them?  You do realize that in terms of public perception, Sony has had console gaming in the bag for years, and MS has been struggling uphill; people hate MS by default.  It's not like MS can puke on a slice of bread and call it an open-faced sandwich; but Sony can, and people will quickly find ways to buy it and enjoy it.  It's a Sony sandwich!  I loved all their other sandwiches, this one must be great, too.

Hey, do you remember how many MS haters used to talk trash about FPS games, and online play, and voice comm, and so on?  But now that there's an actually-great PS3 FPS that embraces all these features, suddenly these features are pretty cool.  Funny how that works: irrelevant and worthless when they're on MS hardware, awesome and innovative when they're on Sony hardware.

Directly answering the topic title, no it wasn't. If there was a top ten half of the places would probably belong to Sony.

No. I won't give credit to Sony if they don't deserve it. MS did bring the hard drive to console. That was innovative. Sony brought CD format and Dolby Surround sound to consoles. Nintendo brought platforms and RPGs, Sega was the first to bring a MMO to console.

Yes, it is embarrasing if you are guilty of doing the same thing, if not worse. In fact it's pretty hypocritical.

Sony wasn't the first company to bring CD media to game consoles, either as an add-on or built-in;  there were platformers on game consoles before there was an NES; but I can't think of an MMO that arrived before Phantasy Star on Dreamcast.

Wow... shouldn't he have said they want to be first this gen and not claim they want to sell one product to 1/6 of the people on earth? And no, sony has never said anything as stupid as this... this is simply not knowing how the consumer market works... pathetic.
