It's scary really..as soon as I finished building my PC some two-three years ago I lost track ENTIRELY what was going on in the PC market in terms of hardware. Catching up slowly now since I'm going to build a new one this summer. Bet I'll lose track again as soon as I finish the job :)

Its not. ATi just released a card that is 10% faster than an 8800 ultra. Which the ultra has been out for 1 year. Do not waste your money on ATi. For at least 2 years until AMD and ATi can get their act together. It would be a huge waste buying the new ATi. Just wait 2 to 3 weeks and get the GX2 which will be 20% faster than the new ATi card at the same price.

EDIT: The new card for ATi is 2 gpu processors in one card. So really its a crossfire config in one card much like the Nvidia 7950 was. The GX2 will be the same. the 9800 GTX will be the next gen card. The real 9-series that will retail at around $600 ish.

For now Nvidia is king of the bunch.

If anyone could find me a $400 computer that can run games like Gears and Bioshock (to at least 360 standards), then I'd be set. But I don't think that's the case. Sure many 360 games are on PC, but I would need a hefty PC.

Then again here we are 2 years after the 360 was launched and we only have 1 action game, Crysis that blows away the 360.

Other multiplat games are a little better on pc graphically but no major difference.

Last gen we had NOLF 2 and UT2k3 only 1 year after the Xbox came out. Both those games blew away console graphics like Crysis does now. By 2 years we had quite a few games taking advantage of the pc's hardware.

Um, I guess I'm crazy but Lems were saying how fabulous Gears of Bore looked and how no game on the PC came close to it. I listened to the hype both from Lems and the fact that Gamespot for some unknown reason gave this uninspired game GOTY. I bought Gears of Bore and quite frankly, Doom 3 which came out in 2005 looks better. Both games maxed out on my PC (8800GTX, Core 2 Due, 3Gigs).

I have news for you, the Xbox 360 is over-rated and out of its league compared to the PC and many of its games.

Last gen we had NOLF 2 and UT2k3 only 1 year after the Xbox came out. Both those games blew away console graphics like Crysis does now. By 2 years we had quite a few games taking advantage of the pc's hardware.

I bought Gears of Bore and quite frankly, Doom 3 which came out in 2005 looks better. Both games maxed out on my PC (8800GTX, Core 2 Due, 3Gigs).

The nVidia 9 series cometh -- further seperation between prices

All I know is that the 360 is relatively powerful and it's only $400.

If anyone could find me a $400 computer that can run games like Gears and Bioshock (to at least 360 standards), then I'd be set. But I don't think that's the case. Sure many 360 games are on PC, but I would need a hefty PC.

I've always been a console guy, but I'm starting to play PC more and more every year. It's really hard though, because I want to try to keep up with both consoles and PCs. It makes it even harder when I want a GeForce 8800GT, but the new 9 series is coming out.

Actually the 360 is not that powerful. Pretty much all that it can do is play games and even that, it can't do nearly as well as a PC.

As for Gears of Bore, if you had more exposure to more higher quality PC games, and utilized and accepted the intensity of gaming only capable on a PC, Gears of Bore would probably be one of the worst games you've ever played. At least that is the impression I had after trying to suffer through its miserable single player experience.

I think the new 9 series coming out may be good news for you. There will be a bounty of 8800GTX's for sale on eBay and I'm sure the retail price of the 8800GT will come down quite a bit. You may actually have that decent $400.00 gaming computer you mentioned within a couple of months. A machine that is capable of defecating all over the 360 and everything it stands for....Whoa!! :P

I even invite Gamespot to defend their mistake of nominating this game as GOTY. Gears of Bore did absolutely nothing to move gaming forward. The gameplay is boring and stale, the level design is small and redundant and the sound is downright pitiful.

The game was worthy of maybe a 6.5.

Many complained that Oblivion did not live up to what it should of been. Oblivion is head and shoulders above Gears.

Just get the 8800GT or 8800GTs. The 9800GX2 and 9600GT are only released to counter the ATI/AMD supremacy with the HD3870X2 and HD3850.

Debuting at $449. The 9800GX2 (G92) is a dual gpu video card. It is scheduled to debut in Feb/March. At the end of Q2, the 9800GTX (G100 ?) which packs an even bigger punch for those enthusiasts out there. Not to mention, it supports Tri-SLI (3 video cards at once). For someone who can afford a $700 video card, you will likely to be extremely pleased.

Oh, and if you are a budget gamer. The 9600GT will be coming out Feb 21st for $168, and is almost as powerful as the 8800GT. In other words, want to play Crysis in High detail for people with little cash in their pockets. Oh yah baby.

Oh... I almost forgot. Here is the expected spec sheet... and just for those of you who don't know about PC hardware... the 8800gts can easily run Crysis on High Detail, at Tru-HD (1080p), at 30+fps. Mass Effect runs at a little less then 720p at 30fps.

Yeah, I really doubt we'll need anything stronger than an 8800 GT to run everything this year. The most advanced game looks like maybe Far Cry 2, which probably has less requirements than Crysis. Unless Project Offset comes out this year, we'll have to see though.

You console kids somehow obviously seem to forget how were you nuts about those teraflops, jiggawatts, transitors, triangles and other techincal stuff when socalled "next-gen" consoles published their "specs".

But when PC gamers go nuts about their graphics boards and their specs which completely obliterate every console system in every possible way, we're suddenly "the nerds", "the tech psychos" etc.

And btw, world of warcraft alone generated about 1,5 billion in 2007. Which glorious analytics system of NPD, of course, didn't count.

Currently the 3870x2 is the best single card solution available, but nVidia will most likely strike back rather quickly with the 9800GX2.

It's scary really..as soon as I finished building my PC some two-three years ago I lost track ENTIRELY what was going on in the PC market in terms of hardware. Catching up slowly now since I'm going to build a new one this summer. Bet I'll lose track again as soon as I finish the job :)

Its not. ATi just released a card that is 10% faster than an 8800 ultra. Which the ultra has been out for 1 year. Do not waste your money on ATi. For at least 2 years until AMD and ATi can get their act together. It would be a huge waste buying the new ATi. Just wait 2 to 3 weeks and get the GX2 which will be 20% faster than the new ATi card at the same price.

EDIT: The new card for ATi is 2 gpu processors in one card. So really its a crossfire config in one card much like the Nvidia 7950 was. The GX2 will be the same. the 9800 GTX will be the next gen card. The real 9-series that will retail at around $600 ish.

For now Nvidia is king of the bunch.

The 3870 X2 is actually more then 100% faster then even the 8800 ULTRA at 8xAA :lol: this test in particular doesn't show 8x on an SLI, but its a bandwidth flaw throughout Nvidias 8 Series were it takes a huge freaking hit from 8XAA, seriously you would have to be retarded to go with the SLI 8 series knowing this unless you only plan to play Crysis :lol:

It's really hard to say, since we only have numbers and no benchmarks as of yet. Unless you want to believe these, which could be fake... but they are inline what nVidia said would be the target performance.
