Blu Ray = The next step in format evolution.
I'm certain people were screaming the same things when they went from cartridges to cds, and from cds to dvds, people will always want things to remain same...while moving forward of course...and not change anything...while changing everything...and games should remain the same as the classics...while being completely different.
Here's the real humour, the same people who claim bluray was unneccessary, then say the ps3 hasn't advanced in any way this gen...it's mind boggling.
Even without the extra capacity for developers or the awesome movies I'd still love Blu-ray for one simple fact. Not a single one of my games has a scratch on it. No more having to "be careful" with my game disks. I love Blu-ray for that alone.EmperorSupreme
this is quite true, i find it very hard to look for even a scratch on most of my ps3 games, as my 360 has already eaten 2 of my games
For anyone that still uses the argument Blu Ray was not needed....
Were DVDs needed?
Were HDTV needed?
Were CDs needed?
Were Cassettes needed?
Were color TVs needed?
Were 7.1 Surround Sounds needed?
Were 5.1 Surround Sounds needed?
Was Dolby Digital needed?
Were black and white TVs needed?
Rather you like it or not technology advances. Technology is also one of the slowest to become intergrated into the majority of people's lives. Just because it starts slow it does not mean it is a failure.
But sony fanboys need to know that More space =/= better graphics.LordoftheVacas
And 360 fanboys need to understand More space =/= longer games.
The extra space is used for full HD graphics and sound

Plus I highly doubt youll see a Multidisc PS3 game this gen. (not that I care about Disc Swapping) More space, More Fun.
is bluray the one causing these installations? or are the developers just taking advantage of the ready HDD?Arjdagr8
Devs dont take teh time To optimize the game like Naughty Dog did with Uncharted. The Blu-Ray disc player does have kinda a slow read speed. But its mostly devs not optimizing well enough.
I'm happy with what Blu Ray affords (higher quality audio and more content) but I'm disappointed with the piss-poor implementation of it. PBSnipes
What he said. Hopefully Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots - Kojima Productions, Konami (Playstation 3) implements it well. However, it hasn't hurt me personally in any way or form, so I couldn't care less.

MGS has an installation, are you saying that's because of poor optimization?
Then again, it does have 50gigs of Data :|

So true...when I compare my ps3 games to the wii's/360's disks, the difference is astounding almost. Dont understand why cows dont use that as an argument.

Really???? Is that why very very few PS3 games run in 1080P or 720p for that matter? Face it BR was created for movies and movies only. Sony Trojan Horsed BR into the PS3 so it could make more money off movie sales. BR wasn't and still isn't needed for games. MGS4 didn't prove this with its 45g of uncompressed audio.

I already responded with not all games take advantage of it, but it is there if a game wants too.

DVDs was created for movies as a priority.
And MGS4 doesn't have 45g of uncompressed audio, it has 7.1 lossless audio. Something you'll never see on the Xbox 360. And it won't take up that much data, tbh :|
[QUOTE="black_awpN1"]More Space means more Stuff. More Stuff means a Better game. kingtito
Ummmmmm WRONG.
Theoretically, it's right. There's a reason games on floppy discs don't stand up to the current games. It's just.. at the moment, no one can be bothered to put data onto the Blu-ray.

Its a great selling point too on ebay....you can get X GAME PRACTICALLY NEW! I love using that line but its true, my games look like they did the day I bought them.
You know, for a long time, the question of "Was Blu Ray really needed?" has loomed in Cow's faces and they've sputtered for answers in the face of 6 hour Heaven Swords and droves of so-so exclusives that didn't live up to the hype that was heaped upon them... Well, finally, Cows have a pretty rock-solid answer to that question - and the answer is MGS4. With this whole 90 minute cutscene thing, and 10 hours of cutscenes in a game that, as a series, tends to struggle to reach 20 hours from start to finish, it's pretty clear that, yes, all of that storage space is likely needed so that you can watch those 10 hours of movies in your game.
My question to Cows is... Is this the triumphant "Told ya so!" that you wanted with Blu Ray - a victory that has no bearing on gameplay whatsoever? That developers will be able to cram more and more and more higher res CGI into your games to aid them in telling a story? So, in short, is this what you wanted from Blu Ray?

THIS-gen Blu-ray is useless since its so slow, however, when it reaches 8-12x Blu-ray next gen, then it will be needed and necessary along with HDDs and more RAM. but its almost useless in gaming this gen because of RAM restrictions on both consoles.

LInk? I dont think you know what you are talking about, you dont develop games. The bluray read speed is slow, just like when dvd drives first came out, they were slow also.
nope. i make no bones about it....im very unhappy with the blu ray drive. it added a huge cost to the PS3 and so far its only been a hinderence rather than a help from a games perspective. a $200 and the PS3 has to deal with installations and longer loading times (when no install is used) because of it.
yes theres the extra space...but what good is it when devs have to start using dummy data and repeating copies of the game to get decent performance from the drive?
if ure a movie buff then the blu-ray drive in the PS3 is great. reliable and gives excellent image quality. but it just doesent meet the demands that next gen games put on a drive. its just too slow.
next gen..if someone is using a disc drive, blu-ray will be in a far better position to deal with demands. the newest drives i could find are already up to 6X so by the time the PS4 and co are out...the technology should be very capable.
but it wasnt ready this gen for games...not even close. too expensive, very little benefit and dire performance.

Are the disks scratch resistant or something?

and here you have the answer to the old folk's tale that the bluray drive in the ps3 is slower than the dvd drive in the 360..
its not. Its actually on par with each-other, the difference is, instead of having to seek out 9gb of data it has a possibility for 4x as much space to seek through.

Blu-rays have some kind of hardcoating layer on them that makes them almost impossible to scratch accidently. There are people on youtube that have done all kinds of torture tests on them. They are incredibly tough for an optical disk.

All I have to say for u is MGS4 has proven u wrong. CGI cut scenes and gameplay in MGS4 is already proven u cannot even tell from CGI to gameplay until u see your life bar and what weapon u are using, that is the only thing that makes u know it is gameplay but if u take the life bar gage and gun bar off the screen u couldnt tell rather it was gameplay. Even gamespot has stated this. Bluray is amazing and thanx to bluray MGS4 was made. Damn I cant wait. :)
and here you have the answer to the old folk's tale that the bluray drive in the ps3 is slower than the dvd drive in the 360..Actually, the 360's DVD drive reads 16.5 mbps and the PS3's blueray drive only reads 8.7mbps. There is no myth about it.its not. Its actually on par with each-other, the difference is, instead of having to seek out 9gb of data it has a possibility for 4x as much space to seek through.

Im glad none of my dvd and cd based games have no scratches it might be because i never cleaned them with my shirt or slid them accross the carpet...ect
Just to add blu rays abbility not to be scratched *which is a myth by the way* is not an inherent abbility of blu ray it was ADDED by the blu ray group because they found that without it blu rays became unusable after the single slightest scratch because blu ray's data layer is much much closer to the surface before TDK's durabis coating was added they we're having to house blu ray discs in cartridge type enclosures ALA DVD RAM carts.
So thank TDK for that, oh adn just to add durabis can be added to any disc format.

That article is not accurate at all. Here is why. Blu-ray technlogy is CLV constant linear velocity and reads at the same speed across the entire surface of the disk. DVD technology only reads at its advertised speed at the outside edge of the disc where it is spinning the fastest. Depending on the game there may or may not be data on the farthest edge of the disk. DVD drives also take a big hit in performace with dual layer disks or DVD9 which pretty much all games are.
