Those of you who remember the early days of the PS2 will remember the ongoing joke amongst those who didn't like the console. It went something like, "oh yeah, where's all that 'hidden power'?" They said this because Sony promised the system was capable of a lot more than the launch titles presented, and obviously, the likes of God of War II, Final Fantasy XII and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater can't really be compared to the likes of Summoner, Tekken Tag Tournament and TimeSplitters. It's like comparing two different platforms, really, which essentially verified Sony's claims. However, most just remember that old joke, and were quick to apply it to the PlayStation 3. Of course, PlayStation consoles are notoriously difficult to develop for initially, so the jokes endure but typically, Sony has the last laugh.

And now that we're entering the third year of the generation, is it now time for the PS3 to separate itself from the Xbox 360 in terms of visuals? Speaking strictly in regards to raw power and potential, the PS3 has the definite edge, but the question has always been: "can the developers even tap into it? Can they take advantage?" Well, let's just say this. We've already sampled the Killzone 2 beta and early single-player build. We've seen what Heavy Rain gameplay looks like. We've heard David Jaffe rave his head off after seeing some of God of War III. Uncharted 2 will look amazing (as did the original), and is anyone really expecting anything less than a graphically astounding presentation in Gran Turismo 5?

First of all, I really don't see anything in Microsoft or Nintendo's 2009 lineup that can compete with these exclusives next year, but for the sake of this piece, I'm specifically centering on the graphics. Thus far, the argument can rage- Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and LittleBigPlanet vs. Gears of War II, Halo 3, Left 4 Dead and other graphically intense 360 titles. Which batch is better? The anal visual freaks could go on for days.

But perhaps the argument dies next year. As was the case with the Xbox and PS2 - everyone had to admit the Xbox was more capable, and typically produced better-looking titles - perhaps it will be time for everyone to concede that the 360 can't compete with the PS3. Many theorize that while the PS3 has a loooong ways to go in terms of potential, the 360 is just about maxed out, and unless I see concrete evidence of 360 titles vastly outstripping the current productions in 2009 and beyond, I think the conclusion is clear. Most developers and analysts said the exact same thing, even at the start of the PS3's lifespan, when it was all doom and gloom.

They said the PS3 will eventually pass the 360 in terms of graphics, and that day may be fast approaching. Let me repeat the list: Killzone 2, God of War III, Heavy Rain, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, and Gran Turismo 5. All I'm asking - and it's a legitimate question - is what in Microsoft's or Nintendo's exclusive repertoire can compete with that as far as overall quality is concerned? And what on the 360 can compete where the graphics are concerned?

Honestly, even the most ardent Xbox lover has to admit that things could change drastically in 2009. And remember, I was one of the first to acknowledge the Xbox over the PS2; I bought most all multiplatform titles on Microsoft's console last generation. This time around? I'm thinking not. And especially when talking about the exclusives, it appears to be game, set and match in favor of Sony...

Yes, I agree that in the late years of a console developers do better quality games that they didn't know how to do before, mainly because they get used more to the hardware specs. An example of this with the PS2 is MGS3 or GOW2 yeah.

yes we get it, there is a secret compartment in the machine that Sony must unlock to release more power. Both systems will get better, you chose sides and you fail.

Linking a site no matter what side you are that has the console name in it as a source kind of makes me think the source might be biased.

Lol I found his argument interesting till he included left 4 dead as one of the 360's graphically intense titles....... that game wasn't made to be graphically intense, that made him seem biased more than anything

I like how he quoted a site with the name "PSExtreme" in which the author claimed the 360 was all but maxed out, and the PS3 has barely been tapped.

i dont care much about who wins the graphics war, I want fun games. If every game that came out after Kz2 looked like kz2 this generation i would be fine with that, as long as the games are fun. But if the graphics can advance with the games being fun, let there be cake. If that makes any sense

Ugg, why do you have to put yourself out there like that. The PS3 was suppose to prove it's power and strength in 07 and 08. Not saying it's bad, just that the 360 has managed to outlast every year the PS3 was suppose to own everything hard.

I don't really see the PS3 really pulling itself away from the 360 in terms of graphics, at least not a considerable difference. They will both get better as programmers learn tricks to get more power out of both of them. They are both so close in power that it really doesn't make a difference. If people really think that the PS3 will do anything that the 360 can't and vise versa, then it is just denial and fanboyism.

Well it's pretty obvious that graphics are continuing to advance on the PS3... I'm betting games on the system will look even better in 2010 (I don't think all the power will be tapped next year). The real question is whether or not the 360 is running out of juice... I think it will still have some games next year that look better than this year, but so far it doesn't look like it has anything that will compete against the PS3's big hitters graphically. But I do think Ninja Blade looks pretty sweet... the only game announced for 2009 that I'm looking forward to on the 360 so far.

i only own an ps3 and i agree, There wont be any significant difference in power or graphics, like xbox and ps2. The xbox had more power and better graphics, but it want that easy to tell.

I really doubt that the 360 is running out of juice. Game developers have no idea of how much power a console really has. I have a PSM magazine from when Def Jam Icon came out and they said that they were maxing out the PS3 back then. Do ya really think that PS3 was maxed out by that game? Come on its not rocket science.

You know, by the time the PS3 definitively surpasses the 360, the third XBOX will be knocking on the door and no-one will care about slightly better textures and lighting effects. Heck, if you liked the PS2 ahead of the XBOX, you never really did care about those things.

I don't think the difference will be that great but I think it will definitely be noticeable. Developers have had an extra year on the 360 and we're yet to see anything that looks as good as Killzone 2 on it. And outside of Gears 1 & 2, I haven't seen any games on the system that come close to snuffing Uncharted or MGS4... There's nothing on the PS3 right now that just blows out the 360 imo (except for maybe MGS4 :-), but I think KZ2, GOWIII, Heavy Rain, & Uncharted 2 could turn that around.

Maybe we should compare games that are out already. And maybe, just maybe the 360 will have some beautiful games out next year. We have no idea because MS doesn't show all of their games 5 years early. And by the way, what is supposed to be so great about Uncharted's graphics? I am almost halfway through it and I don't see anything impressive about it other than your clothes actually "looking" wet when you get out of the water. Does it get better towards the end or something? The water effects look like crap. The game looks very good, no doubt. But, its nothing that impressive.

At the current rate, I'm pretty sure the PS3 will surpass the 360 technically far before the next xbox is on the way. But I do agree that just as graphics weren't the most important aspect to a game last gen, the difference b/w graphics won't really matter to most consumers this gen either... after all, look at the Wii. I'd like to see more big exclusives on the 360 but by the end of the gen, both systems will have great games regardless.

Which power? Hardware is limiting it you can learn few nice tricks and optimisation and thats about it. And every console have bether looking games near end of its life not only play station and thats because devs become bether with hardware.

But ps3 and x360 have similar power and there cant be some huge mindblowing difference like, for example, between high end pc running crysis and x360/ps3

Sony's white paper shows 5 SPUs(or SPEs) to be equal with a 20 pixel shader enabled Geforce 7800GTX (512MB VARM, 256bit wide bus, 16 ROPS) in deferred render performance.

RSX has 8 ROPS and 128bit 256MB VRAM (~22.5GB/s). PPE+7SPEs are active in it's own bus.

We also know in Crysis 1.2, Geforce 8600 GT surpluses Geforce 7950GT in SLI mode.

Refer to http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/gaming-graphics-charts-q3-2008/Crysis-v1-21,747.html

Geforce 7 series has a design issue i.e. unable to process concurrent shader/math and texture operations. NVIDIA fixed this problem with the Geforce 8 series i.e. decoupled shader/math and texture units.

No console will ever be "tapped out", and thats a fact. Developers will continue to innovate and find new techniques in portraying different styles of graphics. They will become more efficient with a console over time, and their games will show that. Lets look at the PS2 as an example. Their best looking games were those that came out at the end of its cycle, such as God of War 2 and Gran Turismo 4. With Xbox it was Splinter Cell, Ninja Gaiden, Conker: Live and Reloaded, Riddick... What I'm trying to say is you are wrong when you say that the Xbox 360 is "tapped out". All of the consoles will have games that look better and better as developers gain more experience on the hardware. Not just the PS3. This thread fails.

:? What games have you been playing?! MGS4 was an improvement over everything! Resistance 2 was definitely an improvement over R&C. Valkyria Chronicles is one of the most beautiful games out right now (not saying that it couldn't be done on the 360 by any means, but it wasn't). LBP looks better than any platformer that came out this gen. And however minor, Gears 2 does look better than Gears 1. There have been plenty of advances... it's just that most of them were on the PS3.

Well fair enough, I have not played Resistance 2 yet or Valkyria Chronicles. As far as MGS4 goes, I have played the demo and it looked great just nothing that special. I am going to pickup Resistance 2 this weekend so we will see how it looks.

i wish they'd quit with all this "potential" crap; 360's embarrassed them and wii took "potential" somewhere else. Sony's coming around, though. Just stay focused on the games, they alone will sell the ps3.

I can not believe threads are being posted from PS3 fans this far into the gen that all it says is "just wait".

[QUOTE="T-Aldous"]I don't really see the PS3 really pulling itself away from the 360 in terms of graphics, at least not a considerable difference. They will both get better as programmers learn tricks to get more power out of both of them. They are both so close in power that it really doesn't make a difference. If people really think that the PS3 will do anything that the 360 can't and vise versa, then it is just denial and fanboyism.Sgt_Hale

Yup fanboys here try to deny it but the article is true. While Xbox 360 has only had a minor upgrade from Geow to Geow 2 PS3 is getting much better results with each passing year. Xbox 360s best games(graphically) still rival a first generation PS3 title.(Uncharted) Last year it was Uncharted, this year it was Metal Gear Solid 4 and now next year so far it looks to be Killzone 2 and 2010 we some are already declaring it will be God of War 3. PS3 still has a long way to go and I can't wait to experience them all. :D

[QUOTE="jakarai"]

Source

I can't wait until 2009 finally kicks off!

God, I cant believe you still believe in Sony's "cell power". come on its been 2 years, give up already. I used to believe that with my heart, but now dont you see it ? Sony is feeding us with their fantasy. How long do you think "the potential" will come? 10 years maybe.... just face the truth.

as an owner of both i must say first that i enjoy games on both consoles...

back on topic, it is important for everyone to understand that though i find PS3 to be more powerful than the 360 and this was after i've played some exclusive titles on both (on same plasma TV) i always found that games such as Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, GT5P & MGS4, R&C to look better than titles such as Geow1 & 2, Halo3, NG2, Fable2 & Banjo...

Problem is that there are fanboys who want to believe the PS3 is twice as powerful than the 360 and that is silly... When i say exclusives on PS3 look better than exclusives on 360 doesnt mean that 360 exlusives are totally inferior (visually)... people might say its a matter of personal opinion but i do believe that we should put our preferences aside and admit that when it comes to exclusives it is being shown that PS3 is capable of producing better visuals...

This topic is referring purely to visuals, therefore while i still find uncharted to look better than Geow2 doesnt mean i think uncharted is the better game.. personally i still prefare Geow2 and think its better than Uncharted....

i don't get... why do PS3 fanboyss care so much about the graphics? the PS2 was the console with the weakest hardware last generation, it didn't change the fact that it was an awesome console

I didn't own a PS2 until the end of last generation. Hell I only kept it for a few months in 2005 just to play Phantasy Star Universe. I owned a Gamecube... it could produce better visuals then the Xbox so yeah I am a bit of a graphics *****.

If Sony can get PS3 down to $299 and just get on SKU on the market I think they will be fine for next year. $299 will be PS3s sweet spot. :D

A timeline of "teh powerz of teh cell"; 2006"The ps3 will pwn the 360s graphics at launch" Lauch:"The ps3 just needs more for devs to get aquainted with it, it will pwn the 360 by the end of the year" Late 2007 "The ps3 will totoally blow the 360 out of the water in 2008" Early 2008; "the ps3 will have better looking games by the end of the year, MGS4!!!" Now; "in2009 the ps3 will prove its power and unlock its potnetial, just you wait" Give it up guys, this gets kinda pathetic really fast, you've been saying this ever scince killzone 2 was first shown in 2005. Thats going to be 4 years when it actually comes out!!!

Has no one noticed that the ps3 lineup us better then the 360 in 2009 80% of people think so according to another topic on this website and has no one eles noticed that all of the 360 main hitters has already been released and now sony is going on about all of its games and it has everyone coming out next year this is a business plan Plonkers come on it was clear its less competition next year and when adverts are on tv all the time for ps3 games and nothing for the 360 because nothing is coming out the 360 sales are going to drop so fast and yeah the specs for the ps3 are far more powerful then the 360 it is clear get use to it

Name an XBOX 360 game that uses the specfic ATI GPU hardware features such as tessellation and global illumination.
