I have raised this question a few times in OT, asking if The Graphics vs Gameplay debates of the wii/360/ps4 era finally got an answer. And it looks like the answer is, devs can sell us with pretty cinematic games with extremely scripted gameplay. @Pedro brought up a good point in the sony conference that many of the games looked the same. Although I don't agree completely, I do agree that during the con conference we were met with a lot of games with that over the shoulder camera, slow walking main character, treaking through a large world with scenes all around. Almost to the point we were witnessing the world instead of playing in it.

Personally I do not know how I feel about games losing their sense of control. Yes there will always be games that sacrifice that itch of just wild action and adventure off the rails, but so many big block buster titles are movie games right not. Whenever devs start saying "We are largely influenced by FILM"....I immediately roll my eyes. Rockstar has been saying that for years and although they make amazing games, often their efforts into cinematography are hamfisted. Look everyone loves movies, but when im gaming I really want to, you know feel like im playing a game. Not an on rail shooter with more tracks, but still precisely leading me into quick time event to quick time event.

non gamers rejoice!

But fortunately they aren't THAT common, even now it's still the online or open world games that get the most revenue and development.

Devs have been calling games cinematic since the Atari and NES days, and there's zero conflict between that and quality gameplay anyway. The only actual movie games are David Cage games.

I think this is just an overblown reactionary concern. I've seen plenty of variety this E3. There will always be 'Genres' and one of those 'Genres' is the 3rd person cinematic story game.

Absolutely, but I do kind of miss....legit amazing single player experiences that you know; don't make me feel on edge to play a certain way and play it to a t to experience the full cinematic quality. I finally got a switch a couple months ago and beat mario ody and am playing through botw and they feel like a breath of fresh air, just allows the player to feel immersed through the gameplay allowed within a beautiful single player world. The Last of Us and the new God of War seem to have a nice balance, and I imagine that is why a lot of people love the witcher 3. Withcher 3 was beautiful, immersive, told a great story, but at the end of the day it was a game!

here is a fun exercise.

check out all the top selling and/or most played games of all time or anytime.

all lists I have found the majority of the games on the list are not story based and the handful that are, (such as Skyrim) everyone knows people do not play for the story

Im calling it now, Death stranding is going to beat MGS 4 for longest cut scene in a video game and longest cut scene sequence.

Just too many big name actors. I can see them pulling a 30-45 min cut scene on us and the whole cut scene sequence going over an hour.

Even though people clearly love those story driven games, I'm of the opinion they should all be got rid of in favor of boring survival crafting games with no story and loads of busy work.

I agree.

The reason companies push story games and try to convince players that they are actually playing a game and not watching a movie is because of the playtime.

They want to keep the playtime low. They do not want you playing that game a year later, they want you hungry to spend another $60.

That is the problem with survial games, they can kill the gaming market simply because people will play just 3-4 games for 4 friggin years!

@zaryia: 1. I'll play you in any game on pc and destroy you. I already told you this. I also have a better rig than you.

2. GTA 5 is about as cinematic as it gets...

3. I didnt say Skyrim was a movie game. I said people played it for the massive amounts of story and lore.

everyone knows that the reason people play Skyrim for 200 hours is NOT because of the story or lore.

that assertion is absurd and laughable.

Seems like there is plenty of gameplay, just not the type you want OP. And that’s ok, no need for you to like every game. Hopefully stuff you really like keeps coming out. That way everyone wins!

Everyone likes different things. There are many people who really like a balance of story, production and gameplay that cinematic games offer. It's not for everyone and that's okay.

Fortunately, there are more than enough alternatives for those who want them.

Lol, the hypocrisy of complaining about 'movie games' and then praising The Witcher 3... that game was EXTREMELY linear in it's story-telling... it just had a big map and plenty of side quests... also the combat (y'know... the gameplay) majorly sucked

If GTA V was a sony exclusive you would be the first to call it a movie game... same with The Witcher 3 and various others.

Witcher 3 wasn't a cutscene or qte every few minutes. It had dozens of hours of actual gameplay.

Movie games are mostly cutscenes and qtes, with 3-4 hours of actual gamplay.

This water muddying isn't going to work. People know a movie game when they see one.

GTA V is an open world sanbox title.

A majority of the time spent in the game is not spent on QTEs, walk simming, and cutscenes. In fact, very little of it is.

GTA V is not a movie game. In fact, it's a great example of the opposite of a movie game.

GTA and skyrim are in the category of games I think have a good balance. Also people play those games for many reasons, you guys can't generalize.

Scripted my ass. More like stylish gameplay.

The whole chase scene in last of us 2 obviously cudda went a lotta different ways yet the animations for just those series of outcomes was rich in action

In ghost he chose a sneaky route and purposely waited for the guy to call for back up then cut him with some unmatched details. Another top notch aaa incoming

Death stranding showed how much pain you will go through weather you decide to use guns or not. Super orginal game on the way

Spider-Man was riddled with the hold your hand see look heres half the games combat mechanics in two minutes for ya that basic gamers know and love. So i dont wanna hear no complaints about that one.

You clearly have no clue what people mean when they say movie game.

We're talking about shitty walking sims with mostly cutscenes, qtes, scripted sequences, a few minutes of 3rd person shooting. Games that you can rent and beat quickly. Like Detroit or TLOU. Casual shit for moms. Skyrim and GTAV have dozens (if not hundreds) of hours of actual gameplay. I'm not talking about games with a good story and cutscenes, I'm talking about games were the story and cutscenes is basically the game.

I assume you're just trying to muddy the water, because no one is this stupid.

Guys I sold witcher 3 after a week to buy arkam knight....I can't beliieve I am going to have to defend that game in this thread.

Witcher 3 is by far not a movie game, even the dialogue/cut scenes actually shape the game world. I hated it, but it more then just a cinematic experience; even I will give the witcher 3 some credit.

We get it, you don't like Sony games. Play Bethesda and R* games.

Not truue. I was one of the ones surprised why everyone in the sony conference thread gave last of us 2 such a hard time and ghost of tsu(whatever) is one of my top games. I am just noticing a lot of pale imitation.

I really don't care what bee they have up their bonnet about TLOU2. Devs want to make the game like that, it's their choice. So many other devs are making other stuff. Namco is making another Jump fighting game, Soul Caliber 6 as well and Capcom are making DMC5 and RE2. You can find a game where you can mash the controller nonstop for hours.

Skyrim and GTAV are not movie games. And this is a fact. They are open world sandbox titles.

I never said there isn't a cinematic or cutscene every few hours.

Define a movie game so. Not "I know it when I see it". Because I guarantee you absolutely classic games that everyone adores will fall under whatever definition you can give. Grim Fandango was just walking and talking. Max Payne was ultra linear. Many a classic RPG stopped for hours of cutscenes and talking. This is a shitty made up slur for games on a system you dislike, that has no actual bearing on reality.

Which one of you is the official authority on movie games and what is it, exactly, that makes a game qualify as a movie game?
Is it the amount of cutscenes?

The last actual movie game I remember playing was on the freaking 3DO...

No, it's made up for games that are mostly qtes, cutscenes, scripted events, and walking. Like Detroit, TLOU, Uncharted, The Order, etc.

This is actually quite specific.
