To my eyes the SEGA Saturn was a testament to traditional gaming.
Back when companies were going for 3D, CG, movie-like gameplay, etc. The Saturn stuck to the old way of gaming and expanded on it solely to the hardcore.
The System pushed 2D Gaming to the Limit at the Time

(This was a launch game)
The console pushed 2D Gaming's gameplay and evolved it.

(DragonForce a game so good it's on Gamespot's "Hall of Fame Game's List or Whatever it's Called" and blended RPG with RTS along with other elements)
The system also appealed widly to the arcade gamer, thus the system had a RAM expansion (or something similar) to increase the systems power and resolution so that games that were literally arcade perfect.

Street Fighter vs. Xmen (on bottom) was the game to premier this, people were amazed how there was literally no slowdown. Street Fighter Alpha 3 (on top) to this day remains the most arcade perfect home console port, and yes that is including the PS2 version.....so what does that tell you.
The Saturn was, no is light years ahead of anything on the market. The SEGA Saturn provided the perfect experience of what it was emulating and did it with a sole point. Can you say this with the PS3 and Xbox 360? Can they match the PC? They fail in every aspect imaginiable. Compared to PC's they have gimped online, low resolution, clunkyer controls, and just over-all inferior ports, while dumbing down the PC's games. Not only that but their additions are just worthless, why do I need a bigger hard-drive? Why does it matter if it goes in higher resolution if it still can't match with what I want it to match? The Saturn didn't joke around it matched what it was trying to acheive, can't say that about the other two platforms.
2D Games are another thing. The Saturn evolved 2D games by not just make bigger worlds or better graphics, but changing their gameplay. DragonForce, Princess Crown, Grandia, Guardian Heroes, etc. all these games evolved the genres they are currently in. Do any 2D games do that now? I mean the only game that truly has done that as of late was the recently release Aquaria

(that everyone needs to buy now)
Most 2D Games are nothing but rehases. The Nintendo DS is currently King in the gaming market but most games on it that are 2D are rehashes of SNES games with low production values. Xbox Live Arcade and PSN has low down arcade games that feel more like downloaded flash games. The Saturn on the other hand has 2D games that are superior to pretty much any games on these platforms.
So it's like I said before, in the West the Saturn was pathetic, in Japan it was amazing.
