Games are still exciting, but depends for who and in what context.
If you don't like hyped mainstream titles search for less hyped gems.
Or go retrogaming.

Ill admit I only read the OP, but im sure 90% of follow up posts say, "your probably just sick of gaming"... as a 34 year old guy who's been gaming since the Atari2600, I can completely agree and understand the OP. The only sizable thing that evolved in this generation was that they became more cinematic which in my opinion actually hurts the industry... we dont need to copy hollywood, because games can do more than hollywood... gameplay hasnt evolved in two generations, nor has narrative or immersion, albeit with a few standout games that make us feel a spark of excitement. I love gaming and will most likely never give it up, but at the same time, what the TC said is on the money for a lot of gamers who have been doing this a long time... I remember the day I bought the SNES, came home and turned mario on... hell even pilot wings, and just marveled at the size and scope of mario and the inventive 3d atmosphere of pilotwings. Those moments simply dont happen anymore... we know how the approach to every game will feel the moment we take it out of the box.
Now playing: Halo 4, Red Dead Redemption, Skyrim u wot m8?Take a break. Try different games. Do something.
Too many games are being fitted to casuals nowadays.

I barely see people hyped for the Wii U, only one person I know was hyped enough to sell their original Xbox 360 to get a Halo 4 Edition one.
[QUOTE="AgentA-Mi6"][QUOTE="mems_1224"]whats your real username? bobcheeseballA level 52 poster expecting to receive a real answer to such an inquiry... Or maybe not. Its probably just mems talking to himself im not pathetic enough to make alt accounts to troll people. i troll people with my real account like a man :P
[QUOTE="DarkLink77"]I was right with you until you mentioned "Sony's first party studios" "Valve" and "creativity and innovation" in the same sentence without a "not" in there somewhere. AgentA-Mi6
Then supress it if you want, thats just my personal insight, i have very little hopes from Japanese Devs now, even the once glorious Konami has failed to impress me recently whereas i still hold Naughty Dog, Santa Monica, Sucker Punch, Guerrilla and Media Molecule in high regard, same as valve and Gabe Newell who refuses to ****ing make Half Life 3. I understand if you dont respect those devs as much as i do, different strokes for different folks.
True that. I still agree with the general premise, though. But then, I've been saying the same thing for years. It sounds like you're just growing up.Its not me folks, its in the air, nothing is impressive anymore, the HYPE for games died or lives on only through the children, always eager and hoping for the best, us, the old generation that lived the golden era of videogames since the 8bits and all the way up are no longer easily impressed by exploding helicopters, realistic battlefields or fantasy settings with worlds needing saviors, its all as cut and dried as it gets.
I havent played many games recently, but those I have bored me quickly and the ones I truly wish to play arent out yet, mainly The Last of Us and some of the unannounced like Half Life 3.
As I read through endless threads of comments and discussions online and in real life face to face conversations I stumble upon what is looming as an inevitable reality, were growing older and were not easily impressed by simple mundane things like most mainstream video games anymore, especially when they completely seem to lack the slightest effort in innovation, and Im looking at EA, Microsoft , Nintendo and Activision when I say that. Sonys first party developers and a few third parties like valve are the last standing bulwark of honest thrive for creativity and innovation.
The magic I used to feel when I opened a new game from my favorite developer is no longer there and I feel that most of the video game series that were once special to me are degenerating or being defiled for commercial exploitation of the lowest possible level.
I mean, look at new games, look at the vita, WiiU, the industry. Its not that we're nearing the end of the console cycle, its something else.

I can safely say I don't suffer from that problem at all. I get pretty excited to play video games no matter what they are.
I don't buy into hype, advertising, or popularity. Perhaps if I did I'd find myself getting disappointed by everything I played.
One disagreement in taste, and suddenly the point of the thread is absurd? smhI was reading your post thinking "ya know I can kind of relate to this".. then you listed Sony 1st party as one of the last great bastions of gaming.
ROFL. Get the f*ck out of here!

This gen has been great. I'll admit I'm burnt out on videogames, but that's a combination of things. This notion that this gen didn't kick some ass in spite of some sh1tty practices, uninspired game design ideas from major devs, and Nintendo backing out of the arms race and continuing to be Nintendo is absurd there were a lot of great games this gen across a myriad of genres. jg4xchampTrue. But this gen was also mad disappointing, too.

Not really. I'm getting older and as I do games become less and less impressive and entertaining. Playing games for 25+ years you tend to get more picky and cynical and in the end I find very few games truly engaging. It happens. I can relate to the op on that.
But to claim that Sony 1st party is one of the last standing thrives for creativity and innovation? Thats a load of horse sh*t. Not an opinion. And yeah, I quit reading his post there.

Lots of trilogies ending far worse than they had any reason to, lots of great franchises dropping off, lots of series disappearing, new series that had a ton of potential throwing it all way, many franchises losing their identities, extreme linearity that's not well done (like RE4), the list goes on. Preaching to the choir, gaming these days is all flash ,hype and no substance, there seems to be concerted effort to find new ways to monetizea game regardless of the consequences, the peoplemaking the games seem to be completely without vision, passion or drive outside of "lets change this game in order to increase profits".

The Halo 3 reveal was the last time I saw a reaction like that.[QUOTE="DarkLink77"][QUOTE="VendettaRed07"] Remember that e3, 2004, when Nintendo showed off a video of Twilight Princess and the crowd went freaking bananas? Can anyone tell me the last time a crowd went nuts like that just by showing off a game? I don't remember.HardGames420
Halo 3 is garbage, I think you meant The Last of Us at E3 2012.
1) Halo 3 was awesome
2) how good halo 3 wasn't even the question. It was when was the last time there was just a roar of excitement just at the THOUGHT of a certain game existing. And Halo 3 is pretty much the last time I remember excitement like that around the industry for something like that.

[QUOTE="DarkLink77"][QUOTE="jg4xchamp"] None of that sh1t is exclusive to this gen.True, but it seems a lot more pronounced this gen that before. Depends on the game/series. Not really, you just got older, the general standards for a videogame game got higher and as such like less stupid sh1t(well that last one is a theory, but whatever). Probably true, in all honesty. But I just don't feel like I played as many "instant classic" games this gen. 'Course, maybe I just played the wrong games.
Terrible endings and videogames tend to go together. jg4xchamp
This is how it goes with everything as you get older. You leave childhood and then slowly take notice of how the magic in everything begins to die. Soon you're an old man and everybody you ever loved has passed away. No body wants to care for you or keep you company. You're simply left miserable and lonely, waiting to die alone and be completely forgotten.
