I never dodged a point which you made. Because a poker player earns his money playing poker does not make him any differant from me who occasionally plays poker in the pub! Were still both enjoying the game and were both poker players but play for differant reasons. Same goes for a person who plays for money in games and does not! Theyre both enjoying the game so whats the differance between them? There reasons for playing and not the game itself.

Dibdibdobdobo

Actually, it does. It makes him a professional poker player.

So is he any differant from me? Is he getting any more or any less enjoyment from the game? No. I'm still enjoying the game as much as he is. The reasons for playing are differant but the game is the same. we both play poker! Either you do or dont.

Your now making your own criteria up for what it means to be a poker player though.

And yes, the professional poker player is quite different from you.

Look TC, the Phrase HARDCORE GAMER is already apart of the English Vernacular and Gaming Community. You can argue with the entire world if you want, but the MASSES have decided they do exist.

Some things in Language are pretty strange, but it is what it is.

Arguing with us won't do anything, and you'll just lose anyways.

If you want to change the entire worlds perception on matters, you better start running for office, because that's going to take time.

SolidTy

Exactly, people started using "bootilicious", and thats a word, right?!

So the masses are absolutely right, hardcore is a clearly defined word.

Besides, like he said, opinions aren't allowed in SW, people will just tell you you're wrong.

But wait, don't run for office in 08, because I want Obama to win.

'Im going to burst alot of peoples bubbles. There is no such things as hardcore gamers! You dellusional children you either do 2 things 1) you do play games 2) you dont play games. There is no number 3) You play hardcore games! as there is no such thing as hardcore gamers nor games unlike porn. Your a gamer as simple as that, So stop trying to catergorize yourselves into a new criteria to make your sad little existance that much easier to cope with.

Whats a hardcore game? Lets see. A game with Blood, Guns, FP View, Swearing! Wait a minute that kind of stuff is added to games to make children feel all grown up about themselves in there bedrooms. Wow how fun that must be pretending your a adult because you play games with a 15 certificate thats so hardcore when your 12. Games like CoD are not hardcore theyre violent, Halo Violent, GTA violent. Violenct game are violent games not hardcore so stop using this word constantly.

Wasnt this stupid comment created by the media to make children feel appreciated when people like R* are bigging up there games with comments like "This is gonna be awesome, 18 rated, Bloodsoaked, Swear-a-thon, Hardcore gun-fest for all, for all you hardcore gamers" which basically translates to "The Whole games content is based around swearing, Gun, Blood and is aimed at people with little to zero maturity".

Theres 2 people in this world.

Gamers or Non-gamers! your either one or the other.

Dibdibdobdobo

I understand where your coming from, and Completely agree in some aspects. People who seem to be like, ZOMG im so hardcore, i play halo, are the people who fall into this category.

I do believe there is a line between casuals and hardcore players. I do not believe the wii is a casual gaming platform. Casual gamers, might be my gf. She has a Wii, mario kart and mario + Sonic at olympics. A hardcore gamer is one we plays a lot, like myself. If im at home im either reading 1)Playing a game 2)Browsing game related content 3)reading a book 4) looking at dault related content (in order from most to least). I spend 90% of my time at home doing something gaming related. this i believe is being a hardcore gamer, and by hardcore i mean just a normal gamer, a dedicated gamer, or whatever jargon of the day you ant to attach to it. (I personally think the term hardcore is such a nerdy wannabe term)

So yeah. you have gamers and you have casuals. I hate people who try tos ay their hardcore based on say, the 1 type of game they play, or that because i own a wii and not a 360 ps3 im a casual. those people however will not understand this topic because their inflated little minds cannot comprehend something other then the fiction awesomeness of their own ego.

So the masses are absolutely right, hardcore is a clearly defined word. I don't agree. The Masses are wrong all the time (It reminds me of a great Simpson't reference, where Doctor Hibbert says, Oh no, we've given the word "mob" a bad name), but when it comes to wordplay, this is hardly the right venue to change launguage (If such a thing can be done).Arguing with us won't change the outside world, the terms already existed before us.

Besides, like he said, opinions aren't allowed in SW, people will just tell you you're wrong. I can agree eith that, This is True. In SW, everyone is right and wrong at the sametime. Contradictions are the name of the game, and we know that when we enter. Seriously though, People can have opinions, but they aren't always right.

But wait, don't run for office in 08, because I want Obama to win. I hope he doens't have any ANTI GAME AGENDA'S, that's all I care about, because I'm Hardcore Gamer Man.

You now don't know what the word professional means.......

Read it up in a dictionary.

Professional - 'earning one's living from an activity, such as a sport, not normally thought of as an occupation'

Your problem is not about you trying to define something, but your basic lack of understanding of the English language. No one here can help you.

There's 2 definitions of a hardcore gamer. There's the wrong definition that's exploited all the time which is basically what you described, people that need to play violent, M rated games because they're insecure about playing Mario games. Then there's the correct definition: anyone who has a passion for gaming. That's it. Anyone who passionately plays video games in general is a hardcore gamer.

I don't think you understand the definition of hardcore gamer.

My brother whose rented 3 games in the past year and purchased none, and plays games maybe 1 or 2 times a month, he is a casual gamer.

Myself, I play games daily, gaming is more than something I do to kill time. I am passionate about gaming. I am a hardcore gamer.

There are three types of people: Hardcore gamers, casual gamers, non gamers.

Yes, there is. They are the ones that make petitions to make Diablo "dark, realistic" (main words in the hardcore vocabulary), and whine 24/7 about "gaming being destroyed" because most gamers can't stand the "cinematic gaming" anymore. They are the ones that think they know more about the gaming business than Nintendo, Blizzard and anyone that doesn't make "hardcore" (cinematic, dark and realistic) games. They are sad, and need to get a life.

OK, time for another analogy. People who play games a lot, are according to you, the same as people who just play games 'every now and then'. So in those terms, you would agree that people who listen to Mozart are just as big a music fan as people who listen to Daphne and Celeste??

I don't see why you can be a Wine connoisseur, or a Film buff, or a Music afficionado, yet you can't be a 'hardcore' gamer.

Hardcore is just a term to define someone who passionately plays games. Would the term game afficionado suit you better? Becasue it means the same thing essentially.

Wasnt a personal attack. You cannot understand such a simple word as Lass/Lasses! Its called basing your opinion on facts and the fact was your having trouble working out this word as you keep putting lassie! Thats just pointing out a flaw.

Thread isnt flawed in any way or form. I got the reaction which i expected so it was not flawed in any possible way or form.

all those who got gaming systems and play games are called GAMERS... you can be interested in mini-games, or shooters, or rpgs, or racing games or else sports games... if you enjoy and spend time gaming that makes you a GAMER...

Casual & hardcore does not exist... a true/hardcore/casual gamer is not determined by the type of games he/she enjoys or the amount of time he/she spends gaming...

IF YOU PLAY GAMES YOU ARE A GAMER LIKE OTHERS...

Malta_1980

"Hardcore: adjective; 1.unswervingly committed; uncompromising; dedicated: a hard-core segregationist.--dictionary.com

Someone who is hardcore at an activity devotes most of his/her time to the activity. Now, this may be for a living or not (this makes him/her a professional, as in a professional gamer--which is an actual term). But someone who devotes most of his/her time to videogames can properly be called a hardcore gamer.

I appreciate that people are tired of rigid definitions of what it means to be hardcore, as it's so often exploited by fanboys, but let's not jump too far in the other direction. There are objective degrees of dedication to gaming. There are casuals and hardcores.

You can't seriously argue that (let's use one platform here as an example) someone who plays Bedazzled and Peggle exclusively should be honestly compared to someone who plays say, Sins of a Solar Empire or Starcraft.

Yes they both play games but there's obviously a huge difference between those two individuals in tastes, knowledge and investment in gaming.

Pretending there isn't to just satisfy everybody is as poor as the argument you're opposing.

Danm_999

I agree with this, it's basically what I view it as. A hardcore gamer is one who plays all types of games, plays as many as they can get their hands on, and knows which are good and bad. A casual gamer is one who goes to the shop maybe once a month and buys whichever game draw their attention, or whatever was recommended by friends, or they saw on TV. Yes I class those kind of people (I know 3 or 4 ) who bought a 360 or PS3 because of GTA4, because their friends said it was cool, as casuals. Basically everyone in this forum is hardcore, we all love games and enjoy discussing them. To be honest the fanboys who state things like "LOL teh Galaxy is for casuals becuz it's got some colour and you can dress like a bee!!!" are actually more casual, since they restrict their gaming by only playing mature games, they are usually the people that say "But I only like games with blood" which is a ridiculous thing for a proper hardcore gamer to say.

Funny how the gaming community has created a name for gamers but then dont understand the meaning. So far i've seen several versions of what "Hardcore gamer" is.

1) Hardcore gamer is based around what system you own (EI: Hardcore = PS3,XBOX, PC. Casual = Wii)

2) Hardcore gamer is based around what kinds of games you play (EI: Bloodfilled games, FPS, Swearing = Hardcore games. Casual = Platform, Pretty colors, anything without blood)

3) Hardcore gamer is based around how many games you buy per year.

4) Hardcore gamer is based on how many hours you play games.

5) Hardcore gamer is based on if you look up games in anticipation. (EI: Net, Mags)

Theres more but i'm sure you get the jist now of what i mean.

Which defintion is it then? The gaming community created this catergory of people called "Hardcore gamers" then does not know which defintion to go with! People said my orignal post was flawed but the gaming community is flawed due to not understanding itself and the defintion which it creates.

Theres more but i'm sure you get the jist now of what i mean.

Which definition is it then? The gaming community created this category of people called "Hardcore gamers" then does not know which definition to go with! People said my original post was flawed but the gaming community is flawed due to not understanding itself and the definition which it creates.

Intelligence. K. Thanks. Bye.

Basically your saying SW's is flawed as all my observations are towards comments which are in this thread!

Yes my *intelligent* is flawed to the Max.

Overall: There is no such thing as Hardcore gamers. Community cannot agree on what the term "Hardcore gamer" means so by default "hardcore gamer" has no defintion meaning there is no such thing.

Glad to see the KISS theory being applied to SW insults.

Keep it super simple.

Heres the difference.

Gamer: plays games just for fun, this is where 80% of people (like me) fit.

Hardcore gamer: Plays the same game for hours on end just to get better, is in a clan of other hardcore gamers whi will train toghether twice a week. Plays in competitions and tournemants for money. The sort of people who still play counterstrike 8 hours a day.

NinjaMunkey01
I play the same games (and new ones) about 6 hours every day, for fun. What does that make me?

Harcore means a dedicated gamer, someone who plays 6 hours a day, someone that knows everything upcoming ect.

Your refering to Hardcore violence. not gaming.

I play games, I discuss games, I am learning to make games, Id like to get a job in the games industry. Exactly what category does that fall under? Addict, enthusiast, hardcore, major geek - all of the above?

A hardcore gamer is not someone who jumps on the couch screaming at a screen while playing COD4 or any other violent game.

A 'hardcore' game is a complex game that demands alot from the player, and is very difficult to master. Indeed violent games dont equal hardcore games.

However a hardcore game =/= a hardcore gamer...

Hardcore gamer - Plays games almost as much, as much or more then they work their job/school. The like challenges, and usually competition. They would rather buy that new game and live on romen noodles then eat well for the week.

Gamer - Plays games. Has played games. Will play games in the future. Plays a variety of gamers. ( sorry grandma playing solitare on the computer doesnt coun't)

Casual Gamer - Plays very few games or very limited in their gaming choices. These include people who play Madden and like nothing else. Or Yahoo games. Or the Sims. The don't own multiple systems.

Those are my 3 types of gamers.

[QUOTE="Lord_Omikron666"]There's 2 definitions of a hardcore gamer. There's the wrong definition that's exploited all the time which is basically what you described, people that need to play violent, M rated games because they're insecure about playing Mario games. Then there's the correct definition: anyone who has a passion for gaming. That's it. Anyone who passionately plays video games in general is a hardcore gamer.AdrianWerner
there is 3rd definition: gamers who concentrate on playing hardcore games

And what are hardcore games?

What if I play really hard and complicated games for about 2 hours every day while some other person plays a very simple game for 6 hours a day. Would that make him hardcore and not me?

Wouldn't a person addicted to videogames count as a hardcore gamer? One who spends most of his time around a console or PC and doesn't seem to do anything else. I know a few of that type.kingdre

Although I would like to try and agree with the OP...I feel this guy has it right. I dont like the term hardcore, as it puts some people on pedistals...BUT...I feel you can be one step further than just a gamer...For years I was a hardcore gamer. People always asked me questions about games as I knew pretty much anything from dates when they came out to how to get past a level and how to cheat if needed..now im a little more tame...
