Gears is my own personnel fav. the sound of the guns, the blood effects and the active reload make it the best gunplay in a game for me.

I really loved the gunplay in the TPS Conker: Live & Reloaded. Especially the sniper rifle: 'WOOOOOOSH' *head explodes*. Beautiful. Not to mention that, as secondary function, it had uranium depleted shells that allowed you to blow up vehicles.

STALKER (series) (PC)

CCS (PC)

FEAR (PC)

Honerbly mention:

Halo (Xbox)

Perfect dark (N64)

KZ2 (PS3)

I like games where weapons feel slightly heavy, and damaging, and have a recoil, alot of games slack on those. Most modern games have guns that feels like paintball guns, and there is not alot of feeling with the weapons, it is giving me such a distracting disconnect, that there are a handful of fps games I stopped playing halfway through, never to pick up again

In no particular order:

F.E.A.R. (PC)

Unreal Tournament 2004 (PC)

Halo 3 (360)

If you're wondering why I picked UT2k4, remember that gunplay also includes how satisfying the weapons are, and there's nothing like ricocheting some flak around a wall and seeing tiny pieces of the poor sap you hit come bouncing back. :P

Is it just FPS games? I find some games with guns that aren't FPS's that have some good gunplay.nintendoboy16

Any shooters will do.

As for my list:

1. Killzone 2 - The most satisfying gunplay this gen. Weapon sounds are incredible, bullet reactions are the best out there. Guns are beautiful and extremely detailed.

2. Counter-Strike - I'm not joking! :D Gun sounds there are classic and everyone remembers them. Shooting feels so good, it is probably the only reason I come back play some more CS. Enemy bullet reactions are almost non-existant, but everything else is superb for a 10 years old game.

3. While I don't like Modern Warfare games as a whole, I love gunplay there.

Bonus points:

TF2 - amazingly solid gunplay for a cartoon-style game

FEAR 1 - was unparalleled at it's time

Stalker CoP - SoC had some weak weapon sounds and glitchy animations, so CoP is better. Never paid attention to Clear Sky though.

James Bond: Everything or Nothing- For a game that was trying to be a cinematic as the James Bond films, you gotta admit the gunplay in that game sticks close to the shooting scenes in those films.

I was also going to say Red Steel 2 .. but i realized that what i like about Red Steel 2 is the sword combat.. I think the guncombat is great too but the sword combat is just way too good so i couldnt list it.. but anyway hiking a guy in the air and pumping them with lead until they fall down is an experience that i wouldnt have expected from a FPS game..

Killzone 2 - Excellently animated meat puppets/Gears - Excellent sound effects and visual effect when an enemy is hit,

Halo 3 - Whenever I get a kill, i'm overjoyed.(I suck pretty bad)

BFBC2 - Excellent "feel" to the weapons aswell as the sounds

Killzone 2 is somewhere on that list for me. The guns feels beefy enough, and the enemies react very well to getting hit. And to top it off, your guy can actually fire from the hip!!!!! In most games your guy goes blind when not looking down the sight, but that's not the case in KZ2! I like how in single player and multiplayer you make most of your shots from the hip. I love the COD4 players who come over and are always aiming down the sights 24/7 :P

Sorry for the double post, but when I click "edit" i get the advert page and then the "invalid board" page :x Anyways, can anyone say "bird chirp"? The bird chirp automatically makes KZ2 the most satisfying shooter :P

Day of Defeat Source

The guns have weight. All the weapons and cIasses are equally balanced so that no one is at a higher advantage than anyone else (except perhaps the .30cal being weak compared to the MG42) and the guns just make loud noises that sound like real guns and do damage like real guns.

Perfect Dark

Opposite the previous mention, this is all arcade... but again, balance plays a large role in the gunplay and fun factor. Granted, there are some weapons that overpower others, but when they are all available (on a map) and anyone with some skill is playing, it will usually lead to a good outcome. Not to mention all the secondary functions that add so much depth to the gameplay.

Doom

Shotgun. Demons. Win.

CrAppyF33ling

In 1.3 my best weapon was the Gewehr 43, and in Source, the Kar98k. In neither case did I run in behind to out-flank (which honestly is proper military strategy) nor act as a sniper. I played the rifleman cIass as a rifleman, and did it very successfully, usually to the great aide of my team.

And the thing about DoD is that you must play as a team to win. Either in offense or defense, if you aren't working as a team, you will soon be overrun. Camping snipers (can easily be routed by lobbed grenades) and people flanking were never an issue when I was playing. Most of the time I could pop the snipers with my unscoped Kar before they knew what hit them anyways. Knowing the map (and playing as a sniper to learn the points) often had great benefits.

The major difference between DoD and other online games I found is that teamplay wasrequired in order to succeed. Camping, ramboing and other individual efforts usually afforded quick deaths. I can't deny that stealth and cunning play a huge role in capturing the last flag though.

Stalker - Shadow of Chernobyl
Killzone 2
Resident Evil 5 (not first-person, so not sure if you would include tps)

Though the best online shooter is probably Bad Company 2. The AUG is my favorite gun.

^ F.E.A.R. really does have crazy particle effects and animations with their guns and the environment

I don't know why anyone would say Halo 3 or MW1/MW2 because of the lack of recoil. You must have noticeable amounts of recoil or have weapons that DON'T sound underpowered to be include for best gun play (MW and Halo lack in one aspect or the other). There also should be certain degree of skill you need depending on the weapon you use.

With that said for me so far it's:

Counter-Strike: Source

Battlefield Bad Company 2

I haven't played Killzone 2, but from what I hear and see, it's up there.

Killzone 2's guns feel very nice, i think the only problem is how the controls ruin your aiming, but the guns themselves have a huge "feel" to them

that said i do wish the shotgun and ISA assault rifle had more "impact", the Helghast assault rifles suck to use but have a really great "impact" to them, the gunshots are loud and the shots per minute is really fast, they feel deadly, while the ISA stuff generally feels kinda slow and average... so they aren't perfect, but they definitely get the whole "weight" thing down tight

gunplay has so much more to do with it that effects and recoil. it's about how fun it is to shoot and kill. In some games the excitment comes from the skill it takes to utterly destroy someone. the feeling of pulling off a sick kill is much more important than any recoil or effects will ever give.

zDoom (You'll be surprised how a current generation source port can update the gameplay of a DOS game)
Half-Life 2
Mass Effect 2 (I know it's categorized as an RPG, but it's still a TPS)
