"...But there are some gifts on display this holiday season that will make losers of all of us. They are hot now, but technology cycles are so fast that these gadgets and gizmos are destined to be doorbusters today, and doorstoppers tomorrow."

"Video games on a disk. Be prepared for a flashing "Game Over" to come to the land of video game disks and the used-game market in the next few years. Manufacturers have been pushing digital downloads for a while now. Want even more proof? Check out OnLive, which doesn't even require a powerful console or computer to play the latest games."

Digital Distribution is the future, weather we like it or not. Developers just love the idea.

I'm for downloadable titles, but as I've said before I still much prefer retail. OnLive isn't an option for me at the moment, and when it launches here in the UK I doubt I'll have fast enough broadband. I'll give it a try though, because I've been watching reviews and finding it absolutely brilliant when it works well.

Onlive is not good at all.

Just saying.

(psst it's probably because of the line up of games that it has.)

I'm definitely all for downloadable titles even though I prefer retail, but if it does go fully downloadable I just hope the price to pay is a bit cheaper.

If the only problem with the service is the bandwidth, then they've done something great here, as more and more people are able to use this service, their userbase will grow. They've basically created a new market entirely.

OnLive doesn't have the fraction of manufacturer support that disk based media do. More professional developers release their games on disc based media than via digital distribution, at least with big firms. And few publishers have released their game via OnLive. Another thing is hardware manufacturers don't have reason to be excited about OnLive because it makes the software processing non-local. Unless OnLive's demand for hardware increases proportionate to demand for hardware in the local-processed market, I can't see them getting fully behind the service. Another thing....OnLive is not digital distribution. OnLive is cloud computing. DIgital distribution, the most critical part of the term is the part about distribution. It's all about taking the game data, the 1s and 0s, and transmitting them over the internet to be stored on your hard drive. OnLive doesn't distribute the data, it just distributes the experience. Disk based distribution is certainly expensive and carries a lot of limitations, so I think more of the industry is prone to go digital, and OnLive sounds like a great concept and a wonderful alternative to console gaming, but unless I see a software catalog and publisher support rivaling, say, Steam, it would be silly to say that developers are gonna jump ship on disc-based media for OnLive.

OnLive is the cloud computing digital distribution service. Steam is for people who want everything done locally on their own machine.

digital distribution really depends on internet providers.

right now, they are charing users more than $100 if you want to have 100GB+ bandwidth per month...it's not cheaper than disc based games for consumer...

Since internet speed and bandwidth is not enough for real quality stuffs, so those digital distribution quality are usually water down version, especially for movies. Btw you cant find games like FF13 and U2 for download. lol 30GB+ for a game. that's like users are paying extra $30 for download fee.

beside, cloud computingdepends on bandwidth too...

Cable/dsl companies aregreedy, and they arent stupid, they want a share of this business too, so internet is not going to be cheap.

However new hardware media might replace disc, like disc replaced cassette.

OnLive is digitally distributing the "experience." :P

Also, when a developer expects a game to be popular and makes 10,000,000 copies of a game, what happens to the hundreds of thousands that don't ever get sold? It all goes into a landfill. What a waste of resources!

DD will take over and pretty much is. This is not to say that disks will disappear as a medium but for at least another 10, 15 years they will be the main way or at least a way to play games, watch movies, e.t.c.

..

The form of DD that will most likely take over would be Steam and its further iterations, simply because it puts more power in the hands of the consumer, is more feasible on the current internet infrastructure and does not have a wide variability in quality. Onlive is not DD and even though You TC may have a 1080P 60FPS 4D onlive experience, a general consensus at least from these boards is that the quality of the experience is quite different user to user.

The industry would be 100% digital allready if we had the infastructer for it. It's silly to think that distributors would want anything better than to not have to worry about manufacturing/packing/shipping the product and just beaming it to consumers. The sad fact is though only a small % of the world has the proper infastructer to support such a platform, and with the current state of affairs with ISP's wanting to cap bandwidth it makes such a platform hard to make a reality to be profitable when downloading a few HD games can easilly cap out some companies bandwith limits per month. Until the ISP's get denied or confirmation that they are free to do what they want with there connections and the government has to lay it's hands off the web industry were not going to see any massive market changes. When a decision is made though...then we will see it.

I think the whole world argument is a bit of misnomer. I lived in Sri Lanka for 7 years and with monkeys running around on my Roof and having neighbours living in poverty I still had a solid 4MB Broadband connection. Enough to easily download a game and what not. I know this is pretty much a survey of one, but I would argue that for those that can legally afford the hobby of gaming Internet connectivity is not as big an issue as it is made out to be.

..

This is not to count that the majority of places where the markets for games exist have a decent infrastructure in place. I think you would be hard pressed to point me to a country/countries that even together account for a sizable percentage of the worlds video game market AND do not have the internet infrastructure available in country to download HD games.

..

On a humorous note I never had any bandwidth limitations in Sri Lanka

Riku you keep making too many Onlive threads, keep it down to one.

If it dies out that means no one is interested and you can stop.

You can say this is not about Onlive but we all know it is especially when you brought it up.

It's not the internets that's the problem, in fact, it's not even broadband, I myself have a 2GB download broadband....Theoritically, I can download a 3GB game in less than 6 hours or so...But in REALITY, sometimes that takes up to a week! Why? It's not the broadband fault, it's the limited BANDWIDTH fault! Digital Download can never be fully realised or reach its full potential...Until the bandwidth across country improves by at least 2 fold if not even more! And consider how much it costs just to maintain the CURRENT bandwidth standards...I doubt that will happen anytime soon!

The problem with going digital only is that not everyone has a solid broadband connection to buy the games and that would cut them out of the market.

Are you the offical spokesperson for OnLive? Give it a rest already. We all know the end of the world is coming, but I'm not going stop living my life tomorrow, the next day after that, and so forth.

Cloud gaming may be coming, but it won't be OnLive that leads the way. At best it's like the NGage, where the idea is sound but the technology is just not there yet.

Desktop computers. You thought these were already obsolete? It's astounding to many techies that these are still on wish lists for 2010 -- and more astounding that discount retailers will use low-priced desktop models to lure in customers on days like Black Friday. But it's absolutely inconceivable that any home user will still be tethered to a desktop in 2013. Home users will graduate to tablets or to laptops, and consumer desktops will become harder and harder to find. On the other hand, expect to see an upswing in user demand for large monitors, keyboards and mouses over the next few years as they try to replicate the desktop experience.

No, just no. This whole list has lost any validity to me now. I wonder who their "techies" really are.

6matt6

No, just no. This whole list has lost any validity to me now. I wonder who their "techies" really are.

As a training 'techie' I will show this to my classmates. Its bound to give everyone a good laugh. This is the worst list ever.

You should. It astounds me how many people actually believe this though. Thats also why it annoys me how in Big Bang Theory, everyone has a laptop. If they were true nerds they would have a desktop. :P

Hey I love that show. But I guess the show gets those laptops free because its like their advertising alienware. It works because as much as I hate alienware when I watch the show I want that shiny laptop.

I'll take USB sticks delivered to me by pigeons over Digital Distribution. I'd rather have the cool box too. Not that Digital Distribution is a bad thing. Steam lets you pre-load games before release and unlocks them on launch day.

I kinda want DD to become standard, but there are 2 big problems.

Not everyone has the internet on the their consoles or has a good internet signal.

Issue with memory.

On a humorous note I never had any bandwidth limitations in Sri Lankaalextherussian

It's only really popular in the U.S and isn't very due to legislation in place to prefvent it and the general term "Net nuetrality" prevents many web providers from limiting there users or blocking service for other reasons. But the big companies are pushing very hard to get it in place where bandwitdth caps are common.

DD won't be the main way to get games for awhile. I like it the way it is now, that you can get games both ways. Not everyone has fast enough internet or they will be capped out as soon as they download a few games (not including their everyday use of the internet). Also, like AmayaPapaya stated, Memory is a big issue on the console side. If Sony stays the way they handle HDD then that is fine but can you imagine the prices that Microsoft would put. They are already overpriced and if you need a bigger HDD for more games then you will be screwed.

Im only halfway through the third season, but it is one of my favorite shows. I cringed when they had all their consoles and laptops stolen though ='[

I rather have an actual disk then something in the air basicly. I only buy DD games if theres no other option and/or if it has some sort of benifit. Like downloading PS1 games from psn. By doing that i can play them on my ps3 and psp.
