Skyward Sword scores GOTY = divide by zero
Because people are excited for the game. It's that simple. It's an experience that they've been waiting for. Something they really want to be great (for whatever reasons). That shouldn't be a problem. The problem lies when others allow individual/group excitement for a game determine how they perceive and judge that game. It kills gaming. It kills enjoying games on your own merits. Why are people over hyping Uncharted 3? O_O take a deep breath.... relax...... relax......... relax....... buy me some skittles meanwhile.

This is a shallow arguement. I am not goign to even bother since you encapsulated video games into a visual experience exclusively. So what do you believe games are? Simply interactive toys?If Uncharted 3 manages to get the same or higher average than Uncharted 2, I'll just shake my head in grave disappointment. It's pretty bad looking when a game in our medium of choice receives the highest praise for trying its best to be like another medium... I feel the truly outstanding review scores and awards should be given to games that push what differentiates gaming from other media; player control. This is why I see the "professional" gaming media to be very immature still.
P.S. I don't mind if you love Uncharted or games like it, but I don't think it should be proffessionally praised as much as it is. The same way that I don't mind people enjoying Transformers 3.

I feel you are completely wrong. Uncharted isn't trying to be a another medium. Uncharted is proving that gaming can over take movies. Be proud that video game's can offer such a wide variety of experiences offering unparalleled levels of entertainment. Like Guillermo del Toro once stated: video games are the future of movies. They can do what movies can't. You ever watched an amazing blockbuster movie that sported great action, detailed characters, a deep story, then said to yourself, "wouldnt it be cool to be in that world? To play it and control it?" This should be a feat for the medium as a whole. Gaming as a whole is vast, and should not, and cannot be packed into one type of design.[QUOTE="Pikminmaniac"]

Then you mention player control. Uncharted provides player control in set piece moments.
Set piece moments still rob you of a great deal of control. When the helicopter knocks down the building your in, the only thing you can do is press jump. That's one button. Every time you do some "platforming" (you know that part of the game that's so linear that it might as well be on rails and played for you) you know that something is going to break under Nathan's weight and prolong the pointless and already dragged out climbing sequence. Then there is the ice cave with Tenzen I always bring up. that portion cannot be fun for anyone! It's just you slowly following a man through a mostly empty ice cave. The game forces you into its own pacing. It's like a back seat driver experience. As a game, Uncharted 2 falls VERY flat IMO. As a movie, Uncharted 2 would be panned for it's bad story and uber cliched characters.
Uncharted 2 is in a limbo state of not doing anything particularily well. At least that's how I feel. However, again, I don't mind other people enjoying these experiences, it's the fact that video game media praises it so highly when I feel the games that show off what games do that no other media can offer should recieve that praise. Video games should be praised for playing to their strengths.

That's your interpretation of what a game should be. My point is that, how can we perceive what a game should or should not be (if it's interactive)? If you're having fun, you're having fun right? But... apparently you personally don't have fun with Uncharted :P.Because they are set piece moments, I need to be pressing 5 buttons simultaneously in order to make it more of a video game? I completely understand what you are saying, I only saying gaming offers a wide variety of experiences that other forms of entertainment cannot, Uncharted included.
it reminds me of a college teach that refuses to give out 100s because no one is perfectApparently its the highest score the site ever gave, so the game should be excellent. Though to be a honest a score like 9.9 is why I laugh at most video game reviews. Like wtf was the 1% off for? How are they so certain its only 1% off and not 2%?

I always find it baffling when Uncharted is chastised for linearity, where on the box it says action adventure, not open world sanbox,
The mantra of the entire franchise is immersive blockbuster/ cinematic action. If YOU are in a collapsing builind being shot by helicopters, how many options do you have?
what miriad of actions could you possibly take?
Video games are still in thier infancy and many devs are still testing its waters to see what different typesof experiences they can offer through it, in the future when this medium realizes its full potential, Uncharted's style will be looked at as a key part, so will RDR, Mass effect, gears of war, etc, because they all bring something valueable, 200+ GOTYs is a good indication of that.
But its fine if Uncharted doesnt float our boat though
I'll forever be angry that Tekken 3, the best fighting game to ever be forged in heavens only got a 9.9 :P Any who, the game looks great but the first reviews are not always the best way to tell how a game will be received. What I find more interesting is the fact that they apparently spoiled the game in the review. DO NOT WANT :?What's the point of a .1 decimal review scale? I'm glad Gamespot changed to the .5 increment scale.

There will be a moment where technology will get to the point where it's cheap to produce games beyond Avatar quality graphics. In the future, it would be possible. Planescape is beyond movies as far as storytelling. It's like a freakin novel lol.

I'm not saying video games can be an exact replica of Citizen Kane. Video games can and most likely will be a superior way to tell a story in the future. No, video games aren't meant to mimic the movies you mentioned (though they can, while offering gameplay, similar to Heavy Rain). That's not the proposal. But to do something as a medium, that movies cannot, while providing a more vastly entertaining experience. There are different ways to tell a story. Of course certain things cinema has done over the years will not directly translate.[QUOTE="DarkLink77"] Gaming will never rival film as a story-telling medium, because games have to balance plot with gameplay. The video game medium is so young. Infantile even, compared to what potentially can happen. Technology will improve to allow for more creativity, deep strories, and characters. What developers consider a major feat as far as gameplay or graphics engineering, would be purely child's play programming wise 100 years from now.

So why 9.9 and not 9.8? Whats the difference between a 9.9 and a 9.8?
For the guys who think Gamespot will score U3 8.3, why do you think that? What negatives do you think they'll use?MushroomWigNothing. None of them have even played the beta/demo, most of them dont even own PS3s. Most of the "hurr durr, Uncharted is gonna get 8.5.....cows have been owned, flopage!!" people are blindly basing their opinions on absolutely nothing.
Conversely, I have concluded that Battlefield 3 is going to suck, but I made that conclusion by PLAYING the game, not by watching videos ;)
Just listen to the same comments people are making: "its on rails, all movie no gameplay, you hardly ever control your character".
Yeah it will. Its one of those titles that always has a good release.Uncharted 3 'll get a minimum 9.0 on GS :)
