So you play TF2, but not Halo MP? Well it would be no wonder your not a fan of bungie though if you don't play MP games as much. If you study Bungie's history from having the first dedicated servers of any MP games to having the first every dedicated MP maps for a FPS. Bungie main target from the start has always been good MP coupled with a good storyline for their games. Something which I think is very evident in Halo 3 and ODST. uh...dude... there were plenty of games that had dedicated servers ..quake 1,2 and 3 all had dedicated servers. Half -life 1 and counter strike as well as unreal 1 and ut 99 all had dedicated servers and clans years before bungie 's halo.. And hell I thought the first halo didn't have online. Wasn't that just system link lan party play? I'm sure he's talking about marathon or myth(either way that needs a fact check)[QUOTE="HarlockJC"]

I don't play halo's MP and I thought L4D was a rip, portal and Tf2 are great, but they didn't blow me away like HL2.

[QUOTE="Persistantthug"][QUOTE="millerlight89"] WTH does it matter if they are FPS games. They are great game no matter what. Valve is not really that great at concole gaming yet so I would understnd if you do not get it. Though on the PC they are easily one of the best. By the way polish does not equal epicness. It is how the game plays, the amount of bugs, the controls etc.... Not if a game is epic.DarkLink77
The Key word here is: ONE TRICK PONY.
Most developers only make one time of game, anyway. So what? I'd say if you truly are a great developer you should be able to branch out in different genres. Although Valve being a one trick pony is hilarious. Portal is by no means a one trick pony status game compared to what they have done. They did a very very very impressive puzzle game with Portal. Left 4 Dead is a FPS you have that, but shouldn't it's primary cooperative focus be taken into the equation? I do agree Half Life 2/TF2 while they are more than capable of seperating themselves do fit a more traditional FPS mold. Valve has been less of a one trick pony this gen, but they have been under delivering on content with their last 2 games(L4D 1 and 2).[QUOTE="DarkLink77"][QUOTE="Persistantthug"]Most developers only make one time of game, anyway. Portal is a Mod.
Portal is a First person perspective type game, just like all the rest of their games.

The perspective does not mean the genre isn't technically different. You can't compare Portal to Call of Duty. You can technically compare Call of Duty to Half Life. Portal is more of a puzzle game than anything else, it's not a shooter. It's not about gunplay, or high intense action, or a bombastic atmosphere. It's a completely different take. That's like calling DICE a one trick pony for making just Battlefield and Mirror's Edge. When clearly they wouldn't be a one trick pony considering how different Mirror's Edge is from other first person shooters to the point where it honestly isn't a FPS. It's just a game that happens to be in first person. Also it being completely rebuilt and retooled for a full retail launch I would say gets it past the standards of "just a mod". Considering how good the game is.I think they were very closed minded when it came to PS3. They didnt want to dev for something that was different than a PC archetecture, so they said screw it. Nothing wrong with it I guess, but I dont think they can ignore the PS3s large install base anymore.
They just need to announce episode 3 and complete the current story arc. If HL3 is anywhere near as ambitious as HL2 then the wait will be worth it.In my opinion, of course. They haven't released (or even announced) a project nearly as ambitious as Half Life 2 was when it was first unveiled, and their other releases have lacked polish and AAA quality. Left 4 Dead was very low on content and lacked the production value that we expect from most games nowadays, then there was Left 4 Dead 2 which seemed like a Madden-style update rather than a proper sequel.
Add all that to the fiasco of their apparent inability to comprehend the workings of the PS3 and to me at least, it seems like Valve haven't had the best run this gen.

Half-Life is considered by many to be the best SP FPS series.
TF2 is considered by many to be the best MP FPS game.
Portal and Left 4 Dead games are just pure fun.
I guess the vocal minority that is bitter about Valve getting praise and winning popularity contests is irrelevant and shouldn't be cared of.
I thought Portal was amazing, and I played it on PS3. That being said, I haven't played anything else by Valve that wowed me. I think they are over-rated as a dev. Their popularity and reputation likely comes from the PC community and the things Valve has done non-game-development wise.
Valve:
Left 4 Dead (Original IP)
Left 4 Dead 2
Portal (Original IP)
Team Fotress 2
HL2 Episode 2
Infinity Ward:
COD2
COD4
CODMW2
Bungie:
Halo 3
Halo ODST
etc.

Now find me a shooter as smilar to L4D is and then I will call it a day.
Go on a multiplayer shooter with an dynamic narrative, focused on the players decision making against a governing reactive global a.i.
Please do.

While Valve hasn't released a blockbuster Half Life game this generation, rather the predictable uninspiring (good quality yes) HL2 episodes; TF2, Portal and Left 4 Dead are some of the defining games of this generation for a multitude of reasons.

I would call it a multiplayer only game in which you shoot lots of zombies in a variety of environments.skrat_01

Unless you consider "Grabbin Pills!" as dynamic narrative.

TOTALLY lacking in quality imo. I've played hundreds of hours of these bad games over the last few years. I just can't stop. I need help! Why can't I just play good games?!?!?!??!

I disagree. Portal and Team Fortress 2 are some of the best games this gen, Left 4 Dead 2 (which reminds me I should go back to that game to try out the Passing) and Half Life: Ep2 are still good, and Portal 2 is probably going to be awesome. I think Valve is one of the best developers this gen IMO.

still one of the best games I've played.
Team Fortress 2 has kept me more than happy. It's one of those games that is going to be around for a long time.
I'm fine with Valve.
Tired of their outdated Source engine they use for evry game. Upgrade your engine and annonce HL3 already, VALVE!silversix_
source is old and not quite up to par with newer ones, but how many other engines from 2003 can still look decent by today's standards.

TF2 is still one of the best-looking games this gen. And character models and animations in Valve games are among the best. I agree on the fact that levels in both L4D games look a bit flat and undetailed though, even compared to HL2EP2.
Bungie needs to make another Stubbs the Zombie, or at least a new IP. Valve has been pretty good so far this gen imo, though i dont personally like L4D. Hopefully Portal 2 will be amazing and Half Life 2 Episode 3 will be out soon :(

i thought the passing looked decent, but the main reason people dont think source looks dated is because of its bsp reliance in comparison to engines like unreal 3 that use barely any bsp and massive amounts of 3d meshes. Source is one of the few current engines that still use bsp for the majority of stuff which is why their games have the distinct feel when playing them. What on earth are you on about????
Team Fortress2 is the best online FPS ever.
Thats right, not only the best online FPS this gen but arguably ever.
Valve is just as good as they have ever been.
TF2 and Portal = awesome
TF2 on pc = gaming perfection for online team work
Also Left4Dead1/2 are very fun with friends. While not the best valve games.. they are still extremely enjoyable in coop and versus.

I wouldn't say "ever", because that's quite a fanboyish, but TF2 is surely among the best (Q3A, UT99, TFC, CS1.6 are the others).

Valve is doing just fine. All of their recent games have been good despitesome finding L4Dlackluster. They're mainly a PC dev and Half-Life is their staple IP so I wouldn't really discuss them in terms of "generations" anyway. Chances are they're working on a new engine right now. God knows when we'll see HL3 butconsidering Valve's track record, and that they're rackin in the dough with Steam, it could be a few more years.
[QUOTE="Espada12"]Bungie's been schizo. Multiplayer wise they got it down(Halo 3 and FireFight). Single player they always let you down in one way or another. Although ODST was definately a good game in that department, Halo 3 was more disappointing in that department. Reach looks like it should live up to the billing though(looks being the key word) Bungie's real issue is that since 2001 they have been a one trick pony. They need to not only get away from Halo, but First Person Shooters as well for awhile.I agree, I'd also like to stick Bungie and relic in there.
jg4xchamp
Exactly but when your on top its hard to keep going
I mean Killzone 2 devs went from being abysmal to great this gen while bungie went bad to Amazing last gen and they can come back with Reach (trust me it looks like the definitive FPS)
I never really was a fan of Valve so I cannot comment but if they so bad how are their servers packed while KZ2 is a ghosttown
Well they've set the bar pretty damn high. They're probably going insane trying to make Episode 3 able to meet expectations.
Valve has delivered the best multiplayer and co-op experiences this gen in Team Fortress 2 and the Left 4 Dead series, and excellent single-player experiences in Portal and Half-Life 2. If that's not "up to standard", I'd sure as hell like to see what is up to standard.
And lol @ comparing L4D2 to a Madden update. The sequel completely blows the original out of the water. To say the changes from L4D1 to L4D2 are anything but significant just says you haven't played it.
Slashkice
Except it doesn't.
First thing's first: I don't consider Portal and Left 4 Dead to be true Valve games. Just look at what Turtle Rock Studios did when they rechristened themselves as an independent studio again: they took the original L4D with them. Likewise, Portal is a game that was assimilated by Valve while DigiPen students were working on their own game concepts. It's like if Blizzard bought the team members of Bungie and coincidentally released a FPS similar to Halo Reach. You're not about to say it's Blizzard's own, are you?
That being said, Valve has done some excellent releases themselves. Episode Two was pretty damn good, even when HL2was getting a bit long in the tooth. Team Fortress 2 is a fantastic sequel to the original. Left 4 Dead 2 (not created by Turtle Rock Studios) is even better than the original.
On that note, why everyone thinks the Left 4 Dead series is not on par with other releases by Valve is beyond me. I actually think Left 4 Dead 2 is one of the best multiplayer games ever made. This is how games should be, not some wannabe artistic games-as-art crap.

Better gameplay modes, better difficulty, better weapons, more weapons, more infected, more maps, better items, more items...it's clearly the better game by a large margin. Characters and maps are subjective (personally I'd say it's a toss-up for characters, with L4D2 having better maps).
Agreed. Leftwas fantastic in4 Dead its own right, but after playing Left 4 Dead 2 it feels like a pre-release beta or something.

Bungie was never bad. They went from good, to famous. Marathon was a great series, and from what I hear the myth series was solid. Oni is a **** up. SOme people liked it though. I personally thought it was a sack of crap as far as third person action games go.Please Log In to post.
