I don't think the gameplay of either can be compared fairly. They share a genre (FPS), but that's about it.Ravensmash
Why not? They are both multiplayer first-person shooters with objective-oriented, team-based gametypes. There's plenty in common for them to be compared. It's not like we're talking about a TBS vs RTS or something where the games both fall under the same umbrella term (Strategy), yet are fundamentally different.
Unless you play TF2 and, you know, don't want to be destroyed by the scout with his purchased upgrades that make him far superior. Pixel-Pirate
buying it won't be necessary anymore.
Yeah, so evil, just as bad as Activision... Is this for real?rolo107you can get every item for free by finding or crafting it, people just have the option to buy it if they want it right there. this isn't bad at all.

I know, I was being sarcastic. Valve gives, and gives, and then they try to make just a little money while still offering it all for free, and they get turned into a villain. It's ridiculous, and pathetic for Valve's accusers.
[QUOTE="Vesica_Prime"]It will be done as soon as Gabe is done eating. You know Valve, wasn't there a Half Life 2: Episode 3 that you were suppose to be working on?
Ace6301
Shhhh every time someone makes a Gabe Newell eating joke, he puts another 100 burritos in the microwave :P.
Maybe, just maybe, they use this money to help fund development on their projects, including the highly likely Half-Life 3(I find a new Episode unlikely at this point). You know Valve, wasn't there a Half Life 2: Episode 3 that you were suppose to be working on?

He keeps giving us the wrong 2.
Fans: "Yo, Gabe, we want the next episode for HL2."
Gabe: "You want TF2? No problem."
Fans: "No, no Gabe. Next HL2 episode."
Gabe: "What's that? L4D2? Ok, it's on the way."
Fans: "Next. Episode. For. Half. Life. 2."
Gabe: "Alright, Portal 2 is coming soon. Just hold on for a little bit."
Fans: "...."

To be fair I'm a huge Valve fan and I prefer TF2 and L4D series over HL2 series. So I'm happy enough with their current stuff. They really should make the next installation in the HL series though. It's just an extra option for those who want extra items but don't have the time to put in the hours to get them... Fine with me.
That's all that matters for meYou guys do realize all items in the shop can be obtained through gameplay and from the looks of the stats don't give much of a significant advantage. Valve has also promised that they will never charge for maps and free updates will continue to come.
Ragingbear505
You do realize these particular items are all cosmetic. So you have the option to get completely destroyed by everyone else for not wanting to shell out extra cash?
No thanks. I'll go play a better FPS...Like Halo. Yeah, I said it.
Pixel-Pirate
Actual gameplay changing items can be unlocked as per usual in the game, any player has access to to them without paying a cent.
Which is why no player is at an advantage by paying.
If you're going to bad mouth something at least read what is being implemented.
What an ungrateful bunch gamers are...Seriously Valve supports the game with free updates for almost 4 years. Now they want to make some money and get some money to the creative part of the community and oh my god Valve is evil. Lets forget about the fact that you can still get everything in the catalogue as a drop, by trading or crafting. I know right? Options are so evil. Its horrible how Valve doesnt dictate how you should play a game. Man if they are not satan I dont know who is. As for me I choose to ridicule all the people who whine and whine becouse I will never believe the PC gaming community is so immature and silly.

I noticed it also says "sell" items on the mann co thingy, how might one accomplish this? I wish to get rid of all the excess crap i have.ferret-gamer
You can use the trade function. Selling I think only pertains to things made by you. As in a new weapon, approved by Valve to be sold and so on. Like the things in the polycount pack.
you have the option NOT to buy it[QUOTE="sillaris"][QUOTE="Pixel-Pirate"]
From the FAQ:
Some items CANNOT BE FOUND OR CRAFTED.
So it isn't options. Some items will only have one option. Buy it.
Pixel-Pirate

You're a funny one do you know that?
Most of the random-drop weapons which are the same as the ones bought in the store have drawbacks that the default weapons triumph over. Anyone would know this if they actually play the game. Also I've already crafted many of the items in the recent polycount package so stop asserting nonsense.
Hate it when people talks smack about crap they don't know.
EDIT:
Q: Will I have to spend money to remain competitive?
A: No. Any items affecting gameplay, and even most purely cosmetic items, will still be obtainable simply by playing the game.
Now hush.
It's an old game that already has tons of free updates, so it's not really a big deal. I don't like the precedent it might set for future Valve titles though.ManicAce
Like someone said this is most likely a test of sorts for Valves DotA game. I am guessing it will be a very similar system to the one in League of Legends which gives the option of buying things with real money or money earned in game, with only the pointless crap being exclusivly real money based.
edit: worth mentioning that League of Legends is free, with an optional box copy that has some champions and riot points.
You don't need to buy them, TF2 is fantastic without them. And considering how generous Valve has been all gen with Steam and The Orange Box, I think it's alright if they charge something at a regular price for a change.
no they have not fallen that low. do i need to buy hats to play tf2?
BTBAM127
The new items that just released requires hats for the set bonus. Example: sniper needs the crocodile hat for immunity against headshots. But the hat is a rare drop, so you won't maybe never find it, or you can buy it for 17 euros. You think that is reasonable?
Correct me if im wrong, but the only items that can only be bought are cosmetic items. Ones that do not change gameplay at ALL.Iantheone
Wrong.
They provided *free* updates constantly for their games for years. This is a feature players *wanted* to have!I felt a disturbance in the force. As if a million Valve fanboys suddenly realized Valve is not the Hippy Dippy company they thought, who does it all for the gamers because they love 'em. But a company after one thing: Money. Valve was, is, and always will be the same as EA, Activision, Ubisoft, and any other big name company.

A bit too cheap I suppose but not too bad.

Care to explain how? Anything that changes gameplay can be crafted or found, but there are a few cosmetic items that can only be bought with real money.
[QUOTE="LegatoSkyheart"]I'm wondering as well. Can't we just mod these in the server? You can mod any skin you want really into the game. All the weapons and items that are in the store will be obtainable in game, certain servers have a separate hat system as well.uh...why should PC users care? They can just mod that stuff in for free.

I have 3 problems with alot of the posts in this thread:
1:The only gripe i have with it is that its a little expensive, but so the what? You can get it for free if u wait. I didn't, i wanted it now, and i bought it, and it was money well spent.
2:I hate that people are raging on valve when that is probably the only major company in the present video game industry that actually isn't a complete sack of pus. If you were to measure the greediness of money grubbing corporate whores in this industry, Gabe Newell is probably on the very bottom of that list (followed argubly by Tim Schafer).
3:They have constantly been releasing FREE updates for it for the last 3 years even though that game makes almost no money any more. So what if they actually want to make a profit for one in years.
Look, when it comes to the direction this industry is going, I'm one of those people who is screaming bloody murder about the corporate greediness of people like Kotick and companies like EA, Activision, blizzard ect ect. But I'm sorry, i just cant crap on valve because of this. They are probably, no, definitely the ONLY major company in the industry that is doing it right. And sadly as soon as Gabe has a heart attack caused by heavy overeating which itself was caused by having to constantly deal with the industry's corporate bull **** then they will probably stop being the way they are now and start being more akin to Activision MS ect ect.
Dont like the new items, don't buy them...if you play the game you will get them eventually for FREE.
