With no ps3 port of the game it leaves me to one of question is valve stupid or just plain lazy?  You got millions of ps3 owners willing to easily give you $60 for a decent port of the game.  Is it that hard to make the game for ps3?  Is it not a wise move to make the game for ps3 to make millions more?

I don't think MS is paying to have the game be exclusive for 360 but I'm pretty sure Valve just doesn't like ps3.  This is pretty much the only game that I want that ps3 doesn't have.

Valve openly admitted to not liking the PS3 ages ago due to its overly complicated architecture. They can achieve the same and more with far less work on the Xbox 360 and the PC.

Nothing personal, Odin, but where have you been. Valve has come right out and said they don't like the PS3, and added that they couldn't figure out why anyone would invest in it. They struggled with the Cel when they released The Orange Box.

I'm sure if they were really guaranteed "millions" of sales they would be more keen on porting it.

Companies like Valve don't make decisions based on which console they like better, or what they feel like doing. They do it based on whether they think they will make or lose money.

I think they realized their mistake later on.. I vaguely remember reading a rep from Valve mentioning that a PS3 version was being considered.

I think the real question here is this:

Is Sony stupid or just lazy.

for the first gen ever Sony decided to make a console without meeting with developers first. this is something they always did in the past, got feedback to see what was wanted in the next console from developers. they skipped that this time because they had their own business interests ranked above developers in terms of importance. it's a shame, could have been an awesome gen for all gamers had Sony not been so arrogant.

If I had to choose it would be the latter, but I wouldn't call them lazy exactly. I like Valve and they make awesome games, but it does disappoint me when they come across like that, especially when other multiplatform developers have made the effort to port games to the PS3, even if those ones are inferior to the 360 version.

Developers positively hated the PS2.  The architecture was an absolute mess.

what the hell does that have to do with anything? the fact is Sony used to meet with developers to ask them what they wanted, they got what they wanted in terms of hardware for the PS2 - the architecture, or the way in which one codes and interacts is a different thing altogether.

i don't recall reading articles of developers saying they were offended by Sony's lack of interest in consulting them during PS2 development (because they did) but i've read a hell of a lot this gen from developers (particularly japanese devs) that they were offended at Sony's arrogance with the PS3 development. not a single roundtable discussion was held with developers which was a tradition for the PS1/PS2 generations.

it's the principle, the idea, that offended and put off developers. whether or not the PS2 was easy to work with is a moot point. it's not about that in the least. people were more willing to work with Sony with the PS2 because they had a better attitude that gen and reached out to developers while the console was being created. didn't happen this gen. not even a group email. nada.

and tell me, did the architecture for the PS2 put off developers? was the PS2 one of the most prolific consoles ever in terms of the scope of it's library? compare that to this gen and try to tell me Sony's relationship with 3rd party developers didn't suffer due to their approach this gen.

Probably more but when you have a game that is top notch like left 4 dead there is no reason to not be able to sell millions of it on another console just as long as it is a decent port.  For all that matters if Vavle doesn't have the qualifications within the company to produce a decent ps3 port by all means why not hire some people to just come in for a little while and help with that?  In my opinion they are missing out on millions by not selling to ps3.

Pretty much what Teuf said.

Valve probably figured the costs in extra development time or development resources for the PS3 version would probably be more than the amount of money they earned from sales. Or atleast, too little profit to be worth it.

I think if Valve decied to port it anyways, even at a loss, then i think that would probably be stupid.

There are always exceptions to the rule. Valve did convey interest in the Wii, however. Moreso than they did in the PlayStation 3.

yeah and how many of those ports were released in an early time period as the original release. Just look at bioshock, they released that game a full year after being release on the 360 and pc and expected to do well? People will lose interest or move on to other games as the hype dies down. And yes m$ makes deals with companies fr the exclusivity which is avery smart move if you ask me

Valve was very involved in the process, Hex, and they hated every second of it. Why do you think they had such wonderful things to say about the PS3?

it has nothing to do with this. from what i understand it's Gabe's decision. orange box only made it to PS3 under immense pressure from outside sources - it had nothing to do with the costs of extra development. especially when you consider these costs are never a burden on Valve, the titles (like orange box) are sourced out to external development teams with contracts that usually include revenue sharing in exchange for covering the overhead of porting the title.

that might be the case with smaller developers where they decide to just make it for one console, but with EA backing Valve for ports the cost is never placed on Valve. if it was then Gabe would never do it.

ugh. i hate it when people talk loyalty with business. it should be a different word.

true loyalty doesn't exist in any arrangement where X pays Y crazy amounts of money to do Z. that's not loyalty. that's kissing the hand that feeds.

There is a difference between those and loyalty.

If you want to pick up and play Left 4 Dead on November 18, you need an Xbox 360 or a gaming PC.  Simple as that.

what the hell does that have to do with anything? the fact is Sony used to meet with developers to ask them what they wanted, they got what they wanted in terms of hardware for the PS2 - the architecture, or the way in which one codes and interacts is a different thing altogether.

So you're saying the developers deliberately asked for a console that would be incredibly difficult for them to work on?  This isn't making much sense.  No doubt developers would have asked for something very similar to what the Xbox had:  powerful hardware, a CPU that can handle unoptimized code, plenty of memory, and good tools.  I really don't think anyone asked for a console with a gimped GPU, no tools, and documentation that was delivered in Japanese.

i don't recall reading articles of developers saying they were offended by Sony's lack of interest in consulting them during PS2 development (because they did) but i've read a hell of a lot this gen from developers (particularly japanese devs) that they were offended at Sony's arrogance with the PS3 development. not a single roundtable discussion was held with developers which was a tradition for the PS1/PS2 generations.

it's the principle, the idea, that offended and put off developers. whether or not the PS2 was easy to work with is a moot point. it's not about that in the least. people were more willing to work with Sony with the PS2 because they had a better attitude that gen and reached out to developers while the console was being created. didn't happen this gen. not even a group email. nada.

and tell me, did the architecture for the PS2 put off developers? was the PS2 one of the most prolific consoles ever in terms of the scope of it's library? compare that to this gen and try to tell me Sony's relationship with 3rd party developers didn't suffer due to their approach this gen.

Developers don't make business decisions based on whether or not Sony offended their personal pride, they go where the money is.  Plain in simple.  PS3 being difficult to work with surely didn't help things, but you can bet anything that if PS3 had a PS2-like lead developers would be scrambling to work on it with a smile on their faces.

I got a pc and I play games on it but the requirements for todays games are too much and my laptop is only a year old.  You tell me?  I don't wanna pay for a new graphics card along with a new processor just to play left 4 dead on pc when I feel like my laptop outta be able to handle the game seeing as its only a little over one year old.

Mine is a year old, but I also knew it wasn't a gaming rig.

I knew mine was not made for gaming but GD I outta at least be able to play some of todays games.  Maybe not crysis but at least a couple of games.

Yeah, I can barely play older games let alone current games.

...and given the Blu-Ray joke that he makes in the game, I don't think Hideo likes the other platforms very much.

Maybe its not loyalty but the MS games have always been exclusive to the ps3 brand for quite some time before jumping ship.  As far as a dev being loyal they don't give a **** because it doesn't apply to them other than when they work on the game for a console.  As far as playing the game money is no object so they don't apply to the general public opinion.
