[QUOTE="the_mitch28"][QUOTE="soapandbubbles"] yeah but which popularised it? when you think of sliding cover..what game comes to mind...yeah vanqiush! soapandbubbles
It would have to be popular in the first place to actually popularise something...
Vanquish was ok but it's not the gaming milestone you're making it out to be.
so why was vanquish given such high praised? What game plays like it..with such sliding? none! it stood out and review clearly mention it...hence popularising it. hence why many more games NOW begin to use it. Haha I think "da sliding" is turning into the new "da foliage"...
So to sum up, no on all parts. Vanquish to this sliding mechanic isnt even Kill.switch to the cover mechanic.Another group of games that has been influenced by the epic masterpiece that is Vanquish, eh Shake?:P
vanquish was one of the most innovative and fun games of 2010. its such a shame that it didnt get GOTY on any site. not even a nomination as far as I have heard.
The worst part about a shooter is the damn walking. Its so friggin boring! Vanquish made it fast, which was effective, and therefor awesome. People say the FPS can't really innovate, lets see some different ways of moving other than an analogue stick!
But the vids don't really prove your point Snake, those games all had those mechanics before Vanquish released. You could say the sliding mechanic was taken more from Mirror's Edge since, as far as I'm aware, that was the first game to do the slide in first person.
But let me say, Vanquish was the perfect shooter. The way that the game let you play it fast where it would be boring or slow when it was difficult was brilliant. Then you could finely adjust your aim in slow-mo, which I now want in every other game I've played since. If it wasn't for challenges 4 and 6 I'd have my plat. Design wise, the game is perfect. However, after my first play through, I skip the cutscenes and can blast through it in 2 hours. Its a short game. But outside of that fact its flawless. I DEMAND a sequel!!!!!!!
Games were all announced with their feature sets out planned out way before Vanquish made a public debut, let alone before someone would have had a proper hands on with it. Beyond that Vanquish did not do well in sales and was not rated amazingly across the board...
So to sum up, no on all parts. Vanquish to this sliding mechanic isnt even Kill.switch to the cover mechanic.alextherussian
Sales wise I can't vouch for but critically the only reason it was rated down was for crap replay value. It was short with no MP. Like a CoD with no MP of any kind. It was AMAZING!!! I won't deny it. But I sold it because after I beat it 5 times over the course of 2 weeks I knew I was pretty much done. Its design is flawless. The game just needed more in it than a 4 hour SP and challenge rooms on the side.
Because it's crazy good, and does for tps what bayonetta did for action hack n slash.why are there so many vanquish fanboys in sw?

yo, im pretty sure both brink and crysis 2 were in development way before vanquish came out and that they would have had to impliment the slide mechanics early on. anyway, farcry 2 had a slide mechanic before any of those games, vanquish wasnt the first to do it.
Far Cry 2 and Wet had sliding before Vanguish this gen. I can't remember if anyone did it before current gen.

[QUOTE="the_mitch28"]yeah but which popularised it? when you think of sliding cover..what game comes to mind...yeah vanqiush! Not really. FEAR and Mirror's Edge had it and they were both far more successful than VanquishI don't think it's having much of an influence on the genre, it's just another game in a long list of others to use a sliding mechanic.
soapandbubbles
The slide thing is actually funny. Last year in may when I was at EA's London conference I found it hilarious that over half of games on display had FPP sliding... Bulletstorm, Medal of Honor and Crysis 2.

[QUOTE="headninjadog"]I hate the debate from the western media that declares Japan falling behind in game development yet western games constantly rip off ideas and techniques from there Japanese counterparts.-Snooze-
Like how the Japanese invented the whole RPG genre.
yeah, I always laughed at people who say crap like that. Or smartasses who try to act "knowledgable" and say nonsense like "Herzog Zwei was the first RTS"I agree Vanquish is the best game ever made.

I have to disagree with this statement, but it comes close :D

Three different shooters that are so close to release, implementing sliding mechanics that are both a strategic and offensive maneuver and one that is an integral element of the gameplay? Vanquish definitly played a part in this. Looks like Vanquish, next to Gears, is one of the most revolutionary shooters of this generation. Say what you will about other games doing it first, but Vanquish is the game to both re-invent it into a crucial strategic gameplay element, and to popularise it. Discuss.

Seriously dude, do you work for Platinum Games or Sega?? Because you're starting to sound like Rikusaki when he rants about how great onlive is (that's not a good thing, by the way).

I agree, there definitly seems to be a double standard going on here. For example, while Gears didn't invent the cover mechanic, it certainly revolutionised it, and many people are willing to accept this notion rather easily. However when someone like me comes along and suggests the notion that a Japanese game (in this case Vanquish) revolutionised a certain gameplay mechanic, everyone gets all up in arms and says "NOOO, that's just not possible". There's definitly a double standard going on there.
Vanquish didn't invent the sliding mechanic, but it re-invented it and turned it into a crucial and unique gameplay device. And the way how Crysis 2 uses it seems eerily similiar to Vanquish. It's possible that this is simply coincidence, but it's kind of rediculous to just outright 100% dismiss the possibility that Vanquish MAY have played a part in it. Of course we will never know unless the devs tell us how this came about.
Actually LMAO pretty hard That is quite comical.[QUOTE="Master_ShakeXXX"] Rest assured Vanquish in time will join the ranks of such highly respected shooters as Counter Strike, Halo CE, and Half-Life 2.Some-Mist

No it didn't, it was just some kind development fad probably taking as basis older games like Mirrors Edege or even FEAR. Last year there were like four games in development that had that gameplay mechanic. Vanquish was simply the first one of those to be released but the mechanic was already used in other games like the two I mentioned.
Yes, many games before vanquish had a boost sliding ability done in the same fashion in 3rd person shooters like vanquish...OH WAIT! Vanquish did it first in 3rd person and made it work and look better..hence the inspirations. No game before vanquish made a gamer go "WOW THAT SLIDING IS AMAZING" NONE! in those FPS games using sliding it was just a 2ndary little thing no one payed attention too...vanquish made it a main ability in a game which works! No it didn't, it was just some kind development fad probably taking as basis older games like Mirrors Edege or even FEAR. Okay, and that translates into being the influence of the three FPS that where in development last year also and that had that mechanic already?
