Err, what game before vanquish played like it in the same manner...name me ONE game in 3rd person that plays like vanquish or just as good with the Boost sliding to cover mechanic? No one cared about slides in those games...as much as when vanquish POPULARISED it when it did it BETTER! do you understand? comparing vanquish to FPS's is funny.

soapandbubbles

This whole thread is basically comparing Vanquish to a FPS and how it influenced it so I can't name other games that did the same thing before it?:?

But Vanquish didn't popularize it. The gaming community is barely aware of Vanquish's existence.

DarthBilf

Exactly. The moment we start seeing games that could fit the Vanquish clone tag is the day we can say it popularized something. All we have now is a bunch of games that where in development around the same time and simply Vanquish was the first one out.

I really do think Vanquish implemented the sliding really well and might influence future games, but there is no way in h_ll that Brink,Bulletstorm or Crysis 2 have sliding because of Vanquish. Brink and Bulletstorm have shown sliding almost since the first trailer and Crysis 2 has been in development for quite some time and soon realising that I find it highly unlikely to have been influenced by Vanquish.

all i'm saying is that you're comparing the sliding ability in vanquish as being the same as those sliding abilities in past FPS..when that isn't true.

yes because during development devs can't adopt ideas...right? Vanquish was in development for awhile and came out in October of last year..the game showed first videos of the sliding/boost ablity before those games did with theres. Now suddenly those titles show sliding abilities as a main thing. It doesn't take much time at all to add it. the sliding in vanquish was shown way before it launched in gameplay videos...

It was a joke, because Crysis 2 sliding is being compared to Vanquish, when it's more like Fear and Mirror's Edge. I was just using his logic against him.

Of course they can. Brink has that Smooth movement over random terrain thingy wich clearly is influenced by Mirror's Edge. Crysis might have added sliding cuz of Vanquish but as I said earlier I find it highly unlikely. I believe that if anyone influenced those games it was Mirrors Edge. And also I do believe it takes more time to implement sliding into a game than you think..... But than again I know nothing about it :P

So, um, the first Bulletstorm trailer debuted in May, before Vanquish did.

Yeh, you're talking about the debut Live Action/CGI trailer which featured...no actual gameplay at all. I'm talking about gameplay trailers.

[QUOTE="Master_ShakeXXX"] Rest assured Vanquish in time will join the ranks of such highly respected shooters as Counter Strike, Halo CE, and Half-Life 2.Some-Mist

Actually LMAO pretty hard

Word so did I. Only Counterstrike is actually worthy of some respect.

[QUOTE="headninjadog"]I hate the debate from the western media that declares Japan falling behind in game development yet western games constantly rip off ideas and techniques from there Japanese counterparts.AdrianWerner

Like how the Japanese invented the whole RPG genre.

yeah, I always laughed at people who say crap like that. Or smartasses who try to act "knowledgable" and say nonsense like "Herzog Zwei was the first RTS"

Oh man, those Herzog Zwei references some make always crack me up.

All those new FPSes use their sliding similiar to how it was used in past FPS. So where the hell do you see the Vanquish influences here?

[QUOTE="glez13"]

No it didn't, it was just some kind development fad probably taking as basis older games like Mirrors Edege or even FEAR. Last year there were like four games in development that had that gameplay mechanic. Vanquish was simply the first one of those to be released but the mechanic was already used in other games like the two I mentioned.

soapandbubbles

Yes, many games before vanquish had a boost sliding ability done in the same fashion in 3rd person shooters like vanquish...OH WAIT! Vanquish did it first in 3rd person and made it work and look better..hence the inspirations. No game before vanquish made a gamer go "WOW THAT SLIDING IS AMAZING" NONE! in those FPS games using sliding it was just a 2ndary little thing no one payed attention too...vanquish made it a main ability in a game which works!

Except that no games seems to be getting it's inspiration from Vanquish, so why are you bringing it up in this thread?

Also...Vanquish was a commercial flop. It won't influence much. For it's gameplay to become influential some other game will have to come, take Vanquish gameplay and then turn it into blockbuster. Then that game will be influential.

Same thing happened with Resident Evil...in reality it was just a severly dumbed down Alone in the Dark clone. There wasn't a shread of originality in that game. And yet it became incredibly influential because of how popular it was.

It's always like that...majority of most influential games are hardly innovative at all.
