Wall Street Journal Confirms That Sony Is Planning PlayStation 4K Announcement and Release This Year

But phones, tablets and computers have been doing this for years now. PS4 can coexist with a PS4 Pro/ PS4s/ PS4K or however you want to look at it. Consumers haven't been too confused as far as every other devices that has done this to this point. I think the gaming community can handle it just fine. There will be plenty of people that will be fine with the cheaper sku while the enthusiasts will want the premium product.

My money staying in my pocket till then then. And thats IF PS4.5 is in a decent price tag because if its not they wont see my money , ever. Maybe next-gen with PS5 and thats IF theyll convince me we wont have a PS5.5 afterwards because again if there is a chance for that once again ... I wont buy a single shit from them till PS5.5. Then if PS5.5 is overpriced .. Ill wait PS6 and here we go again !

How much money SONY will lose over a single guy like me in the long run ? ALOT assuming that i can easily afford 15-20 games per generation + extra accessories plus PSNplus.

Im telling you again , what SONY trying to do will backfire in their face in the long run.

Maybe some games will support 4K but the vast majority won't. Kinda like the OG Xbox could do 720p/1080i but only a few titles supported it. Games like Persona 5 might be possible at 4K on a beefed up PS4 all while mainting 30fps.

Lol, imagine if it is more powerful than the PS4.5 (which is very possible)... I wonder what BS Sony fanboys will come up with next?! Probably see a few disappear and alternate accounts pop up.

Anyway, if these new console upgrades are coming, I hope it's this year (especially for MS).

Well if the PS4.5 is quieter than my PS4 I might upgrade to it. I know it doesn't happen to everyone, but mine is so loud when playing games or blu-rays with the fan noise :( Unless newer PS4's have already addressed that. But I am not going to buy a new PS4 to fix my fan noise. A 4.5 would be a bit easier to swallow...(that's what she said!)

Well that's understandable and all but for me, I just find it there's no need to upgrade another console if the original PS4 is still good to use and unless it's really mandatory to upgrade for whatever reasons, then sure, I'll upgrade.

I wouldn't count on any AAA graphically intensive title running at 4k, based on the rumored specs. Mostly 2D games or games that look somewhere in-between last-gen and current-gen (part I).

It's April fools week, so it is best to relax until next week. This is the time of year major news outlets like to troll and release stories about alien encounters, flying saucers, Sasquatch, and other bogus earth shattering news.

@hrt_rulz01: media outlets do this all the time, and this isn't exactly important news. They'll release a story early in the week, get everyone riled up, and then the morning of April 1st declare April fools. So I'm just saying this is a bad time to put any stock in rumors, and supposed leaks.

Source code of Final Fantasy XV's page lists PC version. As you can see here that the game is planned to be released on Steam and will support Windows 10.

I expect the announcement in the near future.

If don't even have a 4K TV, nor do I plan on buying one for at least another 2-3 years.

So I couldn't care less about it.

Is it gonna be just a a new ps4 model with a the capabilities to play 4k media or Sony is trying to drive the home console market the same way as Apple and other smartphone makers are doing with smartphones where every few years we will be a newer model of the same product with enhanced performance but still compatible with older model so the new console will be ps4S If this is their plan then all i could say is RIP PlayStation division and maybe console gaming in general when that happens PC won't be just better but also a way cheaper option.

Phones , tablets and PCs are not consoles and the difference between consoles and PCs is this universal hardware each generation consolites are so proud about.

Having console market separated in 2 categories of hardware in this point is ridiculous. Did anyone asked those 40+ millions owners out there already if they want to be enthusiasts ? Nope ...

On the other hand , how most of those guys should feel by the fact that need to spend even more $$ for the premium version while already spend X amount for original PS4 ? Or how people in smaller markets that 400$ has a significant value versus countries like USA , UK , Germany etc should feel about this when they already spend the 400$ ?

You see the main problem here is not if PS4 vs PS4.5 is a great idea or not ... Its the timing of this to happen while noone knew about this the moment he paid for PS4. I wouldnt mind for SONY to do this PS4.5 if they actually let us know beforehand. Like " People , there will be a premium version of PS4 if you want in the near future " ... But no , never happened. That alone will create a phenomenally negative reaction which will be well deserved if you ask me and in the end will hurt them ( i gave an example on my last post how ).

And last , is the freaking games. How the heck will that work , specially for games that are based heavily on graphics for their core experience ? We gonna have 2 reviews of the same game ? How the PS4 owner will feel about it when , lets say , Uncharted 4 for PS4.5 will run at 60fps instead of 30fps , way better graphical fidelity and resolution ?

I wouldnt mind that much if PS4.5 was coexisting with PS4 as the premium choice DAY 1 OR there was a way to upgrade PS4 to PS4.5 ( similar to PCs ). But now , this very moment ... 40M++ owners will get slapped in the face hard , having money for upgrade or not. That is the same for X1.

We gonna have epic moments the moment PS4.5 get a release .. Tears , rages , dissapointments etc .. Youll see

You know what SONY does with this PS4.5 this very moment ? They killing their amazing credibility they build up for over 20 years now with PS brand. Killing it hard.

For example . PS4 current owners get the middle finger with PS4.5. They will get forced to upgrade ( most of ) in order to play the games as they supposed to , best versions that is. Then after 3 years PS5 gets a release. Buy PS5 .. then after 3 years PS5.5 arrives. Buy PS5.5 in order to keep up. So what does that mean ?

SONY consoles will lose this tremendous value everyone is talking about since you need to keep spending and advancing to keep up. So in order for SONY fans to play the real deal at any given time , theyll need to spend not 400$ for PS4 but 800$. And who tells me if in the next 2-3 years they ask me for another 400$ in order for me to play the real deal ?

So , will i be able to trust SONY after this ? No freaking way. If i need 400$ every 3 years for upgrades i prefer to do that on my PC ( which im not , im making a decent mid range PC every 5-6 years and im super cool ).

There is not 1 in a million to do that for a console and if thats the case with Playstation , they lost a future buyer big time ( they lost me with PS3 back in the days as well ). Ill stick to renting like i do the last decade , its their loss really.

This 2 versions situation its acceptable ONLY if both systems release day 1 and let you choose for the rest of generation with what you want to gaming with. This is controversial still but is way more fair than now ...

So , in short , if NX provides unique games , new IPs and convince me NX wont be dead after 3 years ( life support even ) , why freaking not , and i really mean it. NX reveal is near , lets see.

Why would this affect your plans? PS4.0 is still getting it, PS4k might just get the same thing at 60FPS. Granted, I'm a PC gamer just because of 60+FPS so I guess I shouldn't criticize. :P

Its going to be a very interesting E3. It seems to me that sony are in a lets just f**K everything up with VR and this ps4k thing mode. WSJ this is main stream now. I'm surprised sony is not getting in front of this so far. This should bode well for MS.

I don't think that's a true statement anymore. 5 years ago there were very few TV's with real 120hz - it was all TV's with "faked" 120hz. Now there are actually TV's with native 120hz, not sure about 240hz - I think there are a few though. The "faked" refresh rates go up to something ridiculous now, like 960 or some nonsense. I'm pretty sure 120hz native is fairly common now on the high end sets.

Some of the early 4K TV's coudn't do 4K/60, they can only do 4K/30 or 1080p/60hz - but I think that was a limitation with the HDMI spec. TV's with the new HDMI spec shouldn't have that problem.

I usually do the mid-cycle refresh to the slim model anyway - I got the new models for PS1, PS2, PS3. So when it comes down to it, I'll probably do it again with the PS4 - and if it performs slightly better that is a bonus.

I wonder if this means there will be TWO new PS4 models - a "slim" PS4, and a "fat" PS4.5? Probably not, it will probably just be a PS4K - just not quite as streamlined as it might have been if they didn't bump up the hardware power.

It can stream 4K, but I don't think PS4 can read 100GB triple layer UHD discs, not even with a firmware update, pretty sure that requires a new laser or something. There are only a couple of native UHD players out there on the market so far, and actually I don't believe any of the UHD discs so far have even used the new 100GB discs.

Most likely Playstation 4K just means it will be able to function as an UHD player, I severely doubt they will aim it to run 4K games - as that would get absurdly expensive and be such a wide gulf with the original PS4 - that type of difference would fragment the userbase.

If they are going to redesign the console and throw in UHD capability, they might give it a slight boost in gaming power - maybe just enough to handle VR better or something like that and maybe offer from other slight benefits (smoother framerates, slight resolution boosts for games that had to be 900p - maybe they will get bumped back up to 1080p). But native 4K gaming is too much of a leap, and the machine would be too expensive. Save that for PS5 IMO.

You're assuming that I am criticizing Sony right now, when I have openly been a fan of upgradeable consoles. Bringing up Nintendo's console, which incidentally is in a very different context than the PS4 is, is amusing, and also misses the point, because a) I actually like the idea of PS4.5, and b) Nintendo's position with the Wii U is not at all comparable to Sony's with the PS4 (and we've seen that Nintendo treated the Wii U better than Sony would have treated a system in that exact same position vis-a-vis their treatment of PS Vita).

SONY is pretty damn genius, imo.

Cerny and SONY knew that both MS and Nintendo would force a new-gen half-way into the current gen because of how badly their consoles are selling. SONY learned from their mistake last gen and planned out the PS 4.5 SoC way in advance to prepare for newer machines. Remember how Cerny said he custom designed the PS4 SoC for scalability? This is what he was talking about.

MS and Nintendo probably didn't see this coming. I can just imagine the anger and frustration in Nintendo and MS corporate meetings after being outsmarted by SONY AGAIN.

I'm waiting on full confirmation, before I get pissy about it.

SONY has prepared this while designing the PS4 SoC. I can't help but be amazed by Cerny's genius and foresight. He actually saw Nintendo and MS being sore losers and forcing a new gen in the middle of this current gen, so he designed the PS4 SoC with power scalability in mind. Now it's almost showtime and both Nintendo and MS are panicking because they didn't expect this brilliant move from Cerny and SONY.

The regular PS4 will be $299 while the PS4.5 will be $399.

SONY has trapped Nintendo. They did it so elegantly and brilliantly like Leonard Messi kicking the soccer ball around and avoiding enemy players effortlessly and beautifully.

Even if the NX is stronger than the current PS4 (I doubt it), it will only be very slightly stronger than the PS4 but more expensive, so people will go with the $299 PS4 over the NX. The PS4.5 is for the more hardcore crowd. I expect a near 3.0 TF GPU.

Just brilliant from SONY. They have been playing 4d chess while Nintendo and MS have been playing tic-tac-toe. SONY is just on another level in sophistication compared to the competition. Like how MS has fallen into each of SONY's brilliantly engineered traps, so too will Nintendo this year.

No. The PS4.5 can upscale to 4k, but I doubt it will render 4k natively.

I suspect all games will run 1080p 30 FPS locked without any dips at the minimum with very slight graphical upgrades.

I don't expect much more than the current PS4 or SONY risks breaking up the install base, which would be near PS3-level suicidal.

Games will be developed with the PS4 in mind and any sub 1080p resolution or sub-30 FPS gameplay can be easily patched up on the PS4.5 with its added power.

lol PS4 isn't "that" weak till where it couldn't support lower level versions. when creating exclusives PS4 has some of the best looking games period so let's not act like PS4 is a potato. The only games PS4 wouldn't support would be ultra mega difficult high requirement PC exclusives like Star Citizen. Out side of super rare high end titles like that where would be no separation.

Remeber every a lot of PS4 titles are still co-shared with PS Vita...PS VITA! So your theory is pretty far fetched given that a log of PS4 games can be made with PSvita hardware versions.

PS4 4K (if it's a thing) will be a power boost for VR and the ability to play 4K blu rays when they eventually turn up. That's it. PS4 won't become a 4K gaming machine.

I have a very good 4K TV and already doubt the wisdom of buying a 4K blu ray player when most of the movies on it will actually be 2K upscaled to 4K (no matter what system you play them on) and they will also be prohibitively expensive. I suppose a more powerful PS4 may give you better FPS on older games but anyone who buys a new console to make older games better is a bit of a dunce IMO.

NO man the best version of games is on PC already you don't play the best version of games,and when the PS4.5 comes out still the best version will be on PC.

This model doesn't do anything bad a all,is not like Nvidia and AMD ask users if they want a new GPU each time they release one,is not like Samsung,apple,LG,google and other ask people if they want a new version of their phones,all the contrary people even expect it.

You don't have to upgrade is not mandatory,i have an LG3 and just because LG already has 2 newer versions doesn't mean i have to upgrade and my phone still is more than functional.

They are not asking you dude,you are being dramatic this is simple an option if you don't care already that PC has the best version why would even care if the PS4 get a small upgrade,is not like sony is forcing you upgrade and is not mandatory,every game that comes out will still work on your PS4,some people will have just a better option those that care for graphics.
