Was PS3 a huge disappointment sales-wise after the success of the PS2?

THE PS brand is tarnished. The PS3 sales are pathetic compared to ps2. Sony dropped the ball yet again.

To whom? I think Sony is more worried that they struggled to make any serious money off of the system, rather than how much the system sold. MS has been incredibly profitable with only a few million more shipped units.

I mean, the ps2 is still selling and the ps3 had a rocky start but is having great numbers and is contributing to sony gaming divisons being one of its most profitable divisions , but yeah the ps3 didn't reach what the ps2 did but hey man you can't win them all, anything can happen next gen.

Considering the system has still sold a fair amount, I doubt this. Next gen will likely play out very similar to this gen (for Sony and MS).

Considering how big the PS2 sold and how nothing else in the past or today will reach those numbers, no. I never had the PS2 and am more than happy with my PS3. The 360 has been one big disappointment for me, so I wont be buying their next console. Heil68

Back in the day Nintendo was the supreme ruler of the industry u know and things has changed a lot since then too. The Xbox shaped the market with the online and then the Wii made the gimmicks popular. There was no way for Sony to adapt this fast, specially when the X360 already sold like 10 millions in its first year and it already had a library of games like: "Tomb Raider Legends" and "Call of Duty 2" that never made it out to the PS3 because it was 1 year late.

PS3 lacked games, gimmicks, an online infrastructure and an affordable price point. The market was totally different from the days of the PS2 but they learned fast. Sony didn't waste time to close that gap like Nintendo did with the N64 and GC and that's why I think that they are fine.

It's funny to see all of the level 10 posts. They've been waiting until the day the could post something "meaningful".

Well at the beginning yes, because it was costing Sony more to make a PS3 than to sell it. $800 a PS3 to sell at $500 is a pretty big loss if you count all PS3s sold at the time.
