Or else how do you think the PS1 went over the N64? Back in the day Nintendo was the supreme ruler of the industry u know and things has changed a lot since then too. The Xbox shaped the market with the online and then the Wii made the gimmicks popular. There was no way for Sony to adapt this fast, specially when the X360 already sold like 10 millions in its first year and it already had a library of games like: "Tomb Raider Legends" and "Call of Duty 2" that never made it out to the PS3 because it was 1 year late.
PS3 lacked games, gimmicks, an online infrastructure and an affordable price point. The market was totally different from the days of the PS2 but they learned fast. Sony didn't waste time to close that gap like Nintendo did with the N64 and GC and that's why I think that they are fine.
