I've come up with a few advantages that each have over the other.

Console Advantages:

  • Price. I say price and not up front costs for a reason. People often say that Steam sales even everything out in the end, but that's BS. If you shop around and know what you're doing, console software is just as cheap or cheaper than Steam, even when Steam is having a sale. I often get brand new, sealed console games for anywhere from $5 to $15 bucks. Not bargain bin stuff, critically acclaimed games that sell for $60 bucks almost everywhere you go. The real difference here is the platform costs. Consoles are roughly $300 bucks, whereas if you want a top end gaming PC, you're easily spending over $1000 bucks. A top end video card alone costs more than a console, then you have to take into consideration motherboard, disc drives, harddrives, RAM, processor, cooling, power supply, sound card, and if you buy the good stuff, it can get expensive in a hurry.
  • Optimization. This sort of goes hand in hand with price. Consoles are streamlined, everything from their hardware assembly to firmware are completely focused on gaming. If you put the same processor and GPU in a PC and a console, you will get significantly better performance on the console. With the PC, you need to compensate for the fact that you're running so many different processes and dedicating less of your RAM, CPU and GPU to gaming. To do this, you need to get really really nice hardware.
  • Local play. Yeah, you can LAN up on PC, but local play is so much more convenient on consoles. Whether you be playing Madden, split screen racing or shooting, it's just a lot better on console. PC is just that, a personal computer which delivers a personal experience. Your friends can watch, maybe get a turn or 2, but they're not going to be playing with you.
  • Fighting games.
  • Racing games.
  • JRPGs.
  • Halo.
  • Uncharted.
  • Multiplat games that don't come to PC like Dragon's Dogma and SSX.
  • Simplicity. You never have to bother with settings on the consoles.

PC Advantages:

  • Hardware. Companies like Intel, Nvidia and AMD are constantly creating new products, better products. You can only experience these on a PC. These companies are the world's leading graphics card manufacturers, and what they have to offer can only be used on a PC. With a console, you have a company deciding what your prebuilt console will contain, and your preferences are irrelevant. Want more RAM? Too bad. Want faster harddrives? Not happening. You get what you get with consoles.
  • Mods. Games like Skyrim are infinitely better with mods.
  • Controller options. Being able to use the 360 controller along with KB/M makes PC the best for controllers.
  • Blizzard. Best developer in the business, exlusive to PC.
  • Communication. You see all these silly debates over PSN and Xbox Live. Well guess what, they both suck. On PC, you can just hop on Skype or Ventrillo and talk. You can run any communication app in the background. This is something that PC has always had. On PC, it's not called cross game chat. It doesn't cost $60 bucks a year. It's pretty ridiculous to look at Xbox Live when you look at the PC. Cross Game Chat is a free 10 second download. Plus, having a keyboard on hand in every game makes it so even if people don't have a mic, you can communicate with them.
  • Battlefield 3. Play a maxed out 64 player match with all settings on max for a crazy experience. This alone is worth having a gaming PC for.
  • More competitive. Games like StarCraft 2 have the highest skill ceilings out of any game out there. Consoles are very casual in comparison to the PC from a competitive standpoint.

I think that the consoles are much better suited for casual gamers. Not casual like farmville casual, but just gamers who aren't interested in having the best gaming experience. PC gaming is more for the gaming enthusiast who want to experience the best. Best controls, graphics, resolution, sound, and most importantly, the most competitive community and games.

*Sigh* Local play. I sure miss that. At least Nintendo will always have it. But by then it's not like adults are going to get together to play video games. :P

This one is not even close to being an advantage for consoles,at all.

And naming specific games to make extra points for the console side is really dumb, one could make the same thing for the PC as well,so all those are moot.

Also,if you´re naming whole genres on the console side why not do the same for the Pc side(i.e Strategy,MMO´s,Simulations, etc)

It's by far the best controller (KB/M) if you get used to it. The whole WSAD Shift Ctrl Tab set up feels like a glove to me, so natural. I've been gaming and just working on PCs for so long that I memorized where every key on a kb is a long time ago. For button heavy games like MMO's, I can easily have like 100 buttons, and know where each one is by heart without ever having to look down at the keyboard. If you wanna be good in those games, you can't be clicking abilities with your mouse, you have to have everything hot keyed.

No,they aren´t,the only thing of note exclusive is the rather underwhelming GT5 and Forza, everything else of note aside from very, very few first party games is on the PC as well and usually much better, not to mention the tons and tons of PC only racing games, simulators(like iracing,GTR,rFactor, etc),to arcade(Trackmania).

And as far as sim racing is concerned,it´s the only system that actually not only has a real scene but also by far the best setups for the genre.

I'm saying the PC can't have the best racing games if it doesn't even have Mario Kart. Plus, KB/M is terrible for racing games because of the lack of pressure sensitivity when turning. The fact that you are required to use a racing wheel is stupid.

I covered that,if you want you can add Motorstorm as well,it still doesn´t make up for it.

It´s not anywhere near of being an advantage to either consoles or PC,both have quite a few in various types of racing games, but again, nothing that warrants any sort of advantage to either and much less making it a point in favour of consoles and against the PC.

Most people have controllers on the PC,and for simulators the controller just isn´t gonna cut it,especially if you´re playing it competitively.

And if MK is the deal breaker for you then it´s also a disadvantage for the PS3 and the 360 I suppose,I don´t see any MK game in those two consoles.

Of course not, even though the PC has been recieving quite a few good ones this gen it´s still way behind the consoles in that department, and neither is the JRPG sub genre, though as far as WRPG´s the PC does have a lot more, most of them exclusives.

I wonder why you mention those genres on the console side as an advantage and not PC specific genres on the PC side like the whole strategy genre(RTS,TBS,GS)MMO´s,(MMORPG,MMOFPS/TPS,etc)or simulators of any description(flight, space and yes, even racing, because the the actual racing simulators that exist are all on the PC).

Heck, even adventure games, the huge majority of them are PC only and this gen had quite a few really good ones.

Few things.

Buying PC games is most definitely cheaper, nothing 'BS' about it. It isn't impossible to find heavily discounted new console games, it is however extremely hard to do it at the same consistency as PC games... especially on day 1 releases and with as much ease.

Buying a console is cheap currently, they weren't always cheap. Of course buying a PC with state of the art graphics is more expensive, you could also buy a cheap PC with antiquated hardware like the consoles.

There are just as many racing games on PC.

I don't really think Halo and Uncharted are that desirable to PC gamers IMO, Halo is a console FPS and Uncharted is well... an extremely linear 3rd person shooter.

There are just as many PC exclusives as console exclusives, so it's just a matter of preference.

A good thing about consoles is simplicity - just turn it on and play games instantly with no worries about things such as drivers, updates and computer utilities. PC is a bit more complicated when it is approached by a casual gamer, but I'm very knowledgeable with computers so I'm ok with PC gaming and deal with issues that may come up.

Graphics and performance in PC games, oh they are much better! MUCH MUCH better. No need to explain about it, you all should know it. PC also gives you the option of 2 different types of controls, keyboard + mouse or a controller. It's always nice to have an option in case you don't like it.

At the moment, there is a new disadvantage with consoles. Casualisation. As many casual gamers are attracted to consoles, hence the manufacturers (Sony, MS and Nintendo) are focusing on the casual gaming market. This ruins the console games for real gamers, and this pushes them away to the PC. Look at the Xbox 360 with Kinect and the Wii & Wii-U, there's just full of pointless gimmicks in them and the games are just terrible for real gamers. Sony is likely to casualise the PS4 as they said they cannot ignore the huge casual market.

Although consoles are still simpler than PCs, they are getting more complicated with the need for hard drive installs and system updates, and PC is getting more focused toward Steam and DD which is pretty much click and play

A reasonable list. I'd say matchmaking should go on the console side; it's the number one thing I miss when playing on PC. Conversely, the thing I miss most on consoles is Eyefinity.

GamerwillzPS

This USED to be true. Not anymore.

Ps3 updates are constant, block the console, and take a long time. Updates on the xbox aren't as frequent but they do happen, not to mention patches are almost as common on consoles, and agian, block you from playing the game.

On the PC all of this stuff happens in the background now a days. And thanks to digital market places and WAY faster load times, I cna play just about any game I own in literally 2 seconds flat, where as it would take MINUTES to get into the same game on a console (looking for the disc, booting up the console, waiting for the game to load, etc ,etc).

Take a look at this vid, for example and weep:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0ffBZI5PpM

The time I have saved in load times by playing PC games alone, the past couple fo years probably amounts to several days of actually playing vs staring at load screens.

Best controls, graphics, resolution, sound, and most importantly, the most competitive community and games.

arkephonic

I think there's a couple of flaws in your post

- First you bundle all consoles in one. You mention both PS3 exclusives and X360 exclusives (and later mention Wii exclusives) as a point in 'consoles' favor. Yet you only talk about the cost of a single console. The price argument doesn't really hold water if you're looking at buying all thee consoles. Suddenly you'd be looking at around 900 for all three plus and extra controller for each, That means that the consoles are actually the same price as a solid gaming PC ($800-1000 is a very reasonable amount to spend on a solid gaming PC).

- Why in the world would you add Halo and uncharted but not Counter Strike, WoW or Leauge of Legends. All three far more popular than either of the console titles.

-You mention genres where consoles tend to do well. Jrpg's, fighting games and Racing games (I think you are wrong when it comes to racing games) but you fail to add the genres that are stronger on the PC (MMO's, RTS's, Adventure games, Indie games in general, Social games, turn based strategy games).

- You mention optimization as a point in the consoles favor but ignore the fact that it's optimized based on standards that are 7 years old. Optimization doesn't add anything to the consoles, it simply reduce the distance they are behind the PC in performance.

Good point, yeah.

I like how Steam updates my games automatically in the background, and it only takes a double click to start a game (some games has DRM so that would take another click...)

Just takes some getting used to. For left 4 dead 2 it's perfect :3

Exactly, after you get used to the m/k control scheme,it feels very natural, flawsless precision in most genres. To make things even better,I recommend you to give mechanical keyboards a try, they're a pleasure to use, both for gaming, and for typing :)

I know one thing, after getting myself a mechanical keyboard,I'm never going back to cheap membrane ones...

Consoles are for people who aren't NERDS!

consoles - much more likely to lose virginity.

Such lovely assertions ;)

Do you have any proof to back them up?

There are numbers of different key switches used in mechancial keyboards, with different levels of tactile and accoustical feedback...

Even my Razer Blackwidow which has a "clicky" accoustical feedback(uses Cherry MX Blue switches) is by no means distracting during gaming. It feels great, both in gaming and typing...

nostromo = 3 fingers for wasd, able to be controlled by 1 thumb. much more efficient, i dont even use my keyboard anymore unless i need to type. i know you spent alot of money on that black widow, but it was a waste of money :P

Wasn't really that expensive,I didn't get the Ultimate backlit edition...

What matters is,to me,any keyboard is miles ahead of any controller. And I'm happy with my Blackwidow, also,it's not even considered one of the best mechanical keybaords. There are many better, but more expensive options around...

As for Nostromo,is it supported properly in all games?

Looks interesting, but the design doesn't sit with me.

its not really supported by anything, but can be programmed to do everything. You can make any button become any key you want, or make any button act as a multiple key macro complete with delays, and endless loops. (worked well in age of conan where all moves required multiple key presses, i just macrod all the moves to a single key press) and keyboard is miles ahead of nothing :P keyboard is so bad for gaming.

But that is fine, there are many control devices on the market, enough to suit all tastes,so we can always agree to disagree :)

Consoles: Cheaper, controllers, they just "work", far more incredible exclusives.

PC: More expensive, more useful, better graphics, better overall experience and let's not forget modding.

price argument does not make much sense. Looks like random drivel. There really is no advantage there. It depends hen you crossed over to the new console vs the same timeframe of a PC gamer. I have spent significantly less then many console gamers on a desktop that only cost me 500 dollar years ago and before that had a desktop that outshined a console and cost me less then a ps3. Only thing I see now is console gamers finally admitting the pc price is not as hilarious as they once promoted (2000+ but still i see).. I spoke about this 2 years ago on System wars monthly. As for your racing... we can all play the exclusive vs exclusive match. Rfactor 2,Iracing trackmania canyons, multiplats of DIrt series, need for speeds, sonic all star racing, project cars but fomr a PC experience, a console does not come close. Hooking up a ligitech g25/g27, triple screening a racing game in a nice custom seat out shines just about anything the console can do right now. For example, Iracing Walkins Glenn
