It can't be something basic, like Diddy Kong Racing DS or Super Mario Galaxy. It has to be a fleshed out story that is meant to add to the experience, rather than just say, "We need a reason for you to do this."

Going by these rules, I would have to say Valkyria Chronicles wins this "award." I honestly can't think of too many other games that are worse than it. Maybe if I played some of the games I liked back then now, I would think differently, but as of right now, I am going with that game.

Also, don't jump on me and say I just made this thread to knock Valkyria Chronicles. It's not my fault the latter fits in to so many bad categories.

Anyway, what say you?

For a game that wants to have a good storyline?

I found Elder Scrolls: Oblivion main storyline pretty horrible, it's not the worst.. But that will just have to do.

Merchant's of Brooklyn is pretty bad, maybe it is just that I hear the horrible voice acting when I picture the story.

I thought it was horrible although not the worst, and then I played Fallout 3. :? They were both really bad (although some of the quests in Fo3 were okay, and some guilds in Oblivion were decent).

I guess you could make the case against pretty much any big FPS this generation like Crysis, Halo, or Call of Duty. They all featured mediocre to just plain bad stories that left a bad aftertaste in my mouth upon completion.

EDIT: Forgot about GTAIV. Now that game had a pretty bad main story. Perhaps the problem lay in the way it was told rather than the actual concept though. It tried pretty hard to create endearing and emotional characters but I never really felt the connection.

SSBB's "story mode" is pretty bad. For a game that's all about multiplayer, it's not surpising that the single player "story mode" sucks.

Super Mario Sunshine made me facepalm on many occasions with its incredibly stupid story. Also, Sonic Rush Adventure's story and dialogue are so atrocious that I skip all the dialoge screens.

See what he means?? You just don't understand it, so you think it's crappy... I think MGS2 had a great story, but just not for everybody.

As for my pick: this gen has to be R2... ****ed up what RFoM did great. Some stuff in the game just doesn't make any sense.

@Bioshock: WTF dude?? KZ2 is not any worse than the usual FPS story, "one man army saves the universe from evil forces" (looks at Halo)

For a game that wants to have a good storyline?

I found Elder Scrolls: Oblivion main storyline pretty horrible, it's not the worst.. But that will just have to do.

Yandere

Ok really now the call of duty games are mainly based are historic events and even then the story that's created is not bad at all.

The simulation was all physical. Everything you see actually happened. The people were just forced into these situations and actions by an outside force.

JangoWuzHere

They're not compelling though. They're just more like mediocre-below average. I'd argue KZ2 or a similar title has a worse story given the concept/setting, but CoD really switches it up too often for you to feel any sort of emotional attachment to the characters. It feels like the story is just there to say there is one rather than anything else. Given the setting (historical events/conflict), it's tough to really play around with the story, but when they do it just messes things up. It's also why you see presentation being one of the main focal points of the series as it can enhance the way the story is told without changing the main concept (which is what needs to be modified).

EDIT: I'm talking about the historically oriented CoD series. The Modern Warfare branch has a lot of room to expand on (as it's not based on history) and misses it's footing pretty often but still presents itself well. Hopefully CoD:MW2 provides a decent story (however short it may be :P).

and killzone 2 does have a bad story. the game tries to be an unflinching war story, but it doesn't respect basic common sense or know what to do to make you care about the characters. the potential was totally wasted, especially at the end, because the last character that had a chance to be interesting and have implications in the sequel was killed. and what was with the helghast pulling an entire fleet of warships out of their ***es at the end? jeez, no need for consistancy I guess.

Any game that doesn't need a story yet tries to add one.

The worst story ever has to be from a story-driven game, since you can't fail all that much at a story for a puzzle game or something.

I take that back, companies are really original and put out quality timeless classics that never get old and have a compelling great story such as Assassin's Creed and Gears of War. Wait wha-

and killzone 2 does have a bad story. the game tries to be an unflinching war story, but it doesn't respect basic common sense or know what to do to make you care about the characters. the potential was totally wasted, especially at the end, because the last character that had a chance to be interesting and have implications in the sequel was killed. and what was with the helghast pulling an entire fleet of warships out of their ***es at the end? jeez, no need for consistancy I guess.
