I didn't like the story in the recent batch of Pokemon games, mainly because I just couldn't stand the absurd level of mysticism the developers tried to inject into the story.
Phantasy Star Universe. If you haven't played it all the way through in single player, you cannot comment that any other game has worse storytelling - period. PSU Universe is like the "lung cancer" of storytelling. It's like going to the doctor's office and finding out you have two weeks to live. I would rather be eaten alive by a flock of seagulls than sit through PSU again. Phantasy Star Universe is so bad that you could not create a worse story, even if you intentionally ruined everything at every moment. There are things in PSU so backwards, so foul, so idiotic, so cliched, predictable, and trite that the writers must have been one-eyed demons sent from hell to destroy JRPG fans. - Playing Phantasy Star Universe's single player campaign is like eating a bowl full of broken glass soaked in gasoline. It's like a cow-pie ice cream cone with cadaver sprinkles. Phantasy Star Universe is the UN-WRITING, it's the anti-christ of the written word, the death of language, hope, and humanity. Phantasy Star Universe' storyline is so utterly terrible that its continued existence is proof that god himself has stopped caring. I know why the bell tolls, it tolls for Phantasy Star Universe. - Seriously - don't touch it, don't buy it, don't play it. Don't bother answering any other game. You want proof? The ending of Phantasy Star Universe contains ADS FOR a MONTHLY SEGA ONLINE SUBSCRIPTION. Yes, the single player story is *so bad* that the designers said "screw it" and replaced part of the ending with advertising. The ads were sadly more cohesive than anything else in the game...subrosianWow, you just perfectly described Valkyria Chronicles. I've never played that game before, but from you said, I almost know I would hate it.
It can't be something basic, like Diddy Kong Racing DS or Super Mario Galaxy. It has to be a fleshed out story that is meant to add to the experience, rather than just say, "We need a reason for you to do this."
Going by these rules, I would have to say Valkyria Chronicles wins this "award." I honestly can't think of too many other games that are worse than it. Maybe if I played some of the games I liked back then now, I would think differently, but as of right now, I am going with that game.
Also, don't jump on me and say I just made this thread to knock Valkyria Chronicles. It's not my fault the latter fits in to so many bad categories.
Anyway, what say you?
is this a joke? Valkyria chronicles has the best storyline this gen, wtf is wrong with u? Valkyria Chronicles was almost completely devoid of originality in the story department. It REEKED of the worst possible cliches, awful dialogue, and facepalm worthy characters. Add that in with unbalanced units, and you have a pretty bad game overall. Seriously, Valkyria Chronicles' story is so damn awful that I think the game would've been better if there just wasn't any of it at all. It goes over all the familiar themes you've come to expect, and if you would like to discuss this further, I'll pull up my old thread that discusses this in more depth.Lol, oh yeah, the cut scenes were so garbage it wasnt funnyHas to be street fighter 4 by far. I mean lawl el fuerte wants to find out what zangief eats

While I sort've agree I did like D/P/P's story because well Team Galactic actually had a villainous Story they wanted to create their own world but to do so it will in turn destroy the real world so you actually wanted to stop them. Who cares about expanding the Oceans that isn't villainous.Far Cry 2. It has 30 hours of gameplay and about ten minutes of story telling, half of it being in the first few minutes of the game. BTW, did anybody know that there's a FAr Cry movie. My friend saw it and said he cried himself to sleep that night.
lol at people saying fallout 3. Apparently you have never played the Gears of War seriesMM555Gears' story is adequate. Fallout 3 is an RPG, so it has higher standards to live up to. I haven't played F3 yet, so I don't know how bad it is, but Gears' story really isn't the worst for a shooter.
Metal Gear Solid games.
All of them.
And Final Fantasy VII.
Never before have I seen such ridiculously intricate, convoluted, and downright stupid plots.

The story is there, its just kind of hard to follow because its intermixed with regular dialogue, and a lot of the quests that drive the game act as independent little stories, so it can be really hard to follow. The twist at the end was pretty good though, when:

The Jackal turns out to be pretty much a saint, dedicated to saving innocents in a world gone complete ape****, even after hes dying of cancer.

No one's buying it.
I'm surprised at people saying Fallout 3. Sure it's story wasn't the best ever, but NO way in heck is it the worst story ever.
ON-TOPIC: Perfect Dark Zero. From what I've heard, it's horrible.
gmc2u_64
IT IS THE WORST. The plot twist was weak. it wasn't even intresting, it was short. It did not live up to the Fallout name in fact it butchered Fallout lore and make it even worse.(imo)

I assumed the TC ment this gen

Alright, this Gen is kinda understandable. But saying that Fallout 3 is the worst story ever, just NO.It can't be something basic, like Diddy Kong Racing DS or Super Mario Galaxy. It wasn't that bad.
I found that the worst thing about it was how
the only character you are supposed to give a **** about died not even half way into it... that leaves an empty feeling because the player hasn't been introduced enough of his/her fathers past to actually give a **** about his motives... I had a feeling of "well that's his destiny, not mine"
...which meant I was not particularly impressed by the story, but I have seen A LOT worse this gen.
What gets me is how the game suffers in the long term; Oblivion was brilliant for the first 60 minutes before the story just becomes mind numbing and utterly depressing, but even then the game doesn't even have decent role playing to fall back on. Fallout 3 has a boilerplate story with good voice acting along with solid gameplay with slightly weak role playing (I prefer to be rewarded for sticking to my own characters abilities, not just being allowed to use any weapon from the start) so in that respect it kills Oblivion, but the story in a role playing game has to be good so that it can have lasting appeal.
But there really isn't much to live up to in retrospect, the only thing I think could have done with being a bit more 'Fallouty' was the music.
oh i misread your post deathscape, you were talking about another thread talking bashing the story. I thought you were talking about the thread where you bashed VC's gameplay for no reason:
http://www.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=26932878
oops. :)
but you seem to be bashing VC's story now. bashing the gameplay didn't work out so well maybe bashing something else will work out for you.
Fable 2 (this gen)a lot of things in it seemed so forced, and i didn't care for any of the characters in the game good game besides that though i suppose. Dont know about of all time, most games i used to always get games based on weather or not they had a good story so i havent played to many (IMO) with bad stories before this gen.

Examples??? Sure the main quest was kinda ehh, but some of the side quests were really creative. (i.e. Tenpenny Tower, The Power of the Atom, and Oasis.) And no one can deny the games charm and atmosphere..It is, trust me, I played it, it's the worst thing about the game. Can you give me an example about how horrible it is? Well, lets just say you don't know who Jo is, and why you're even playing, it's cheesy, cartoony and nonsensical at times, the plot is hard to follow and doesn't explain itself very well either. You know something is wrong when I ask a lot of questions about why this and that happened and can't think of a reason due to how absurd the plot is. The comic books and novels had more of a story than PDZ ever had.
Bad cheesy, yes, I know, and some cutscenes are just painful to watch due to absurd moments and god awful dialog. It does have plotholes, like "How did they know where they were at", etc. Did you know nearly every review for the game criticized the story, Gametrailers gave it a 5.1, LOL. And the story is also so bad that lots of original Perfect Dark fans pretend the plot doesn't exist in PDZ, I'm not making this up.I didnt think Fallout 3's story was all that bad at all really.
