[QUOTE="silversix_"]The game is 7 years old... what were you expecting? If you were in 2004 you'd like the game like every single person who've tried it.-Renegade
Metroid Prime came out in 2002 and is IMO a better game. Yes I just said a console FPS is better then one of the most praised PC shooters of all time. A good game is going to be a good game no matter how old it gets. I still til this day find Super Mario Bros. 3 fun. Half Life 2 had its moments but overall it was a borefest.

Well, i found Metroid Prime to be a much better game than HL2, but i'm one of those people who insists that Metroid Prime is not a FPS by any means.

There are plenty of things wrong with HL2, but it's still a better game than just about any other fps out there. It's easily one of the 10 best fps's of all time, and I think it would be hard for anybody (haters included) to objectively put together a list of 10 better fps's.PurpleMan5000
I could. It'd be pretty easy, actually.

For me the game is overhyped and overrated. It's good but not that good.

Keep in mind that the game was made 7 years ago and is still better than most shooters released today.

It's the most immerseful game for it's time. Indent think u understand the game. Free - Man is escaping from an alien communist takeover, being aided by fellow scientists and refugees and ultimately topples the regime. So yes, the point of the game is to run run run and survive survive survive. Not to mention that this game came out in 2004 and is still my favorite game of all time

Game was a let down for me. The gunplay is nothing special, the characters are kind of meh, the story is poo, the AI is not too good. Like I always say about this game, why praise it for storytelling and pacing when the story it is telling is crap? By the way I played it Nov 2004.

DOOM Quake

Quake III

Unreal Tournament '99

Tribes 2

Half-Life (the original, which wasn't crap)

Halo: CE

Battlefield 2

System Shock 2

Crysis

Unreal Tournament 2K4.

Ten FPS games better than Half-Life 2. Not hard. I even named 11 because I could.

I would swap System Shock 2 with No One Lives Forever 2, because SS2 isn't a traditional FPS, but a RPG with loose FPS elements.

Hell, if we consider hybrids, then i might as well mention Deus Ex & Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay, which are so superior to other first person shooters, they obliterate every single first person shooter in existence.

True. System Shock 2 is more of a Action Adventure with some RPG mechanics that let the game be a shooter under certain circumstances. But then again NOLF 2 was also awesome because it had extra elements other than the pure FPS like the stealth and the modification of abilities.

Half Life 2 is also kinda like that it is good not because of the FPS itself but because of the storytelling and the whole feel it created. Honestly of the big three of 04 I preferred Farcry.

Yeah, some first person shooters that stand head and shoulders above the rest are the ones that mix things up and, basically, are hybrids that don't depend on the shooting aspect that much. Deus Ex is a Stealth/RPG;Chronicles of Riddick is Action - Adventure/Stealth game, and examples and magnificient games can go on.But then there's pure, arcade FPS games done extremely right. Like Serious Sam, DN3D, Quake, Doom - basically what i call a arcade FPS, a sub-genre.Then there's the 'Michael Bay' sub-genre. Defined by its disturbing focus on scripted set pieces, horrible linearity, and a generic, plain boring theme.

For someone who loved the Metroid Prime series would i find Half Life 2 enjoyable.

The games are completely different, the only common thread of similarity they have are the isolated atmospheres but even those are presented very differently in the actual games.

Doom and Quake are horrible.

I agree that Half Life and Halo: CE are better.

I haven't played System Shock 2, unfortunately.

Crysis is very good, but I did not enjoy it as much as Half Life 2 (Far Cry was much better than both). You could make an objective case for Crysis being better, though, so I'll give you that one.

The other games are difficult to compare because they are either online only, or focus almost completely on online play. I was talking merely from a single player standpoint, as I don't really enjoy online fps myself. Sorry I did not clarify that. I can see how somebody who prefers online play would not like a game that had no online component.

Perhaps you are accustomed to more "cinematic qualities" in your games than a 7 year old masterpiece can provide. Compare it to it's contemporaries, and see it for what it was.

Strange thing to say.

They were very good for their time and very influential. However, they are nearly impossible to go back and play today because the gameplay is just far too dated. Horrible AI, horrible graphics, and horrible gunplay make for a bad game. The level design is still very good, but that isn't enough to save those games.

Can't vouch for Quake nowadays, but recently I found the original Doom to be on the dull side of things.

Fortunately Doom II doesn't suffer the same fate, as the action in that game is frequently turned up to 11, and the levels are better in general.

Strange thing to say indeed. I've replayed Doom I & II over 20 times, they are still played in MP trough various source ports, and have a giant modding community. And the nightmare mode is more entertaining to play than any arcade FPS in existence. Well, for me and other people.

Its aged gracefully, with smooth frames per second, solid controls (m/kb) and good level design. Aged infinitely better then say.. Goldeneye for example.

Then there's the mods, to give it full mouse look, updated visuals, HD packs, and a ton of excellent campaigns.

I honestly have no idea why you would say it has aged even remotely bad. On the contrary, its the FPS that has aged the best.

I thought it was ok, didn't think it was as great as most people do. I didn't give the game much time though, I think if I got into it and the story I'd like it a lot more since the actual gameplay was fun.

You could also use Skulltag, Hi Res items and HD texture pack to make the game look like this:

Half- Life 2 was fun, but it wasn't as great as I thought it would be. However, that can probably be attributed to how overhyped it was and how long it took Valve to release it. Half-Life 2 Episode 2, on the other hand, blew me away!

Even though the 360 version ranks among my favorites, there are some things I can see bugging people, especially some of the vehicle sections. It's more of a taste issue for me than anything else. I loved it for the characters and how different the gunfights feel in comparison to other shooters, Gravity Gun nuff said.

Before anyone comes in here trying to flame, i'm actually trying to have a civil discussion. I'm not saying the game is bad, obviously, it's not. I just didn't like/enjoy it...and i kinda hate myself(not really) because i REALLY wanted to!

I just disliked everything about it...but the sense of isolation/being alone really took a lot of the fun out of it for me. No real NPC's..no real characters...you just go from one side of the level to the next killing things. The mechanics of the game are great, no doubt....but it just didn't feel real? Blah. Hard to explain.

So far those of you who loved the game, what is it about the game you enjoyed?

cyclops10

if you want more npc interaction then play the two episodes. Alex is more fleshed out as are the rest of the characters. I love HL2 and the episodes. i emplore you, try the episodes, they are better in most every way

tbh i never liked HL2. Both the original and ep. 1 are incredibly boring, and ep. 2 isn't much better. Poor AI, mediocre story, horrible gunplay, and atrocious vehicular combat do not make a good FPS in my eyes. And for those using the "its 7 years old" argument, Halo CE is 10 years old and it feels like it was released yesterday(gameplaywise). I find many other current and past FPSs to be superior to HL2 in almost any way.

The first Half-life is way better and inovative. It was a shooter afterall. HL2 is a adventure game with guns on it.

I just didn't enjoy it as much as the original. There was some great tech on display but the combat was downright poor and I didn't care for the story.

It was a good game for its time, but it hasn't aged well at all.

I don't understand why some people today still call it the best game of all time. It's really not that great,

Half Life 2 is a full game, and episode one is a sequel, but very short, and episode two is a short sequel to episode one.

I loved everything about it. It sounds like your were just expecting the game to be something that it's not.KHAndAnime

What? fun?..dont mean it to sound bad..BUT...at the time HL2 came out it was praised to hight heaven by everyone..online,tv,magazines,ect..What i found was it was just "ok"..I played though some of it on my friends highend pc just to see what the hype was about at the time..HE loved it..I was like...eh, its ok but nothing that just captured me..

Its like Crysis..Its has been hyped as the best of the best..I found it not as much fun as 10 year old fps Ive played. It looked ok but that was it ..I think I might be one of those people that, If you tell me something is going to be great and that it blows something else totally away..I go in very critical of it..AND anything at all turns me off..I say, dont hype things up so high because people go in expecting a LOT..
