while its the reality, if PC gamers want to tout amnesia as a PC exclusive that is on the same level as gears 3 or uncharted 3.... then you cant just claim "oh its an indie game" whenever it suits you.

ninjapirate2000

The day you make a thread I will totally spam it with Spider-Man memes.

Oh, and to not "distract" the thread or whatever, no one ever claimed that. Plus, how and why should people compare an indie PC exclusive game with a top tier console exclusive? That's kind of stupid, tbh.

I think he's just saying that it's wrong for people to count amnesia as a pc exclusive while games from psn and xbla don't get counted as exclusive. At least that's the vibe I get.

that is a perk for PC that consoles don't have in the SW metagame ... too bad for consoles.

I am not getting that at all and I don't understand who would think that. PSN and Xbla games ARE console exclusive games, especially if they are, you know, ON one console.

[QUOTE="Jebus213"][QUOTE="rasengan2552"] Amnesia is an indie title you moron. who would even make the comparison ?mccoyca112

Only an ignorant console gamer.

Who would bother comparing pc graphics to consoles? Fanboys ziiiiiiing. :P

I played it a buds house recently, except he gave me time, put the lights off with quality headphones. Its a pretty different experience as to what you'd get normally in a well lit room etc. Still, it's a bit overhyped in scare factor. There were a few select times were I was pretty freaked out though to the point of my arm hairs standing up.

I remember coming back from the demo in which the waterbeast was there.

Everyone in the forums was like "ZOMG THAT WATER SCENE ZOMG"

I mean jeez it was just a splash in the water. Gave me some rush when running towards the next box but not scary in the slightest

Shattered Memories is not even close as scary as Amnesia. Amnesia has a really upsetting atmosphere which can easily bring chill down your spine especially in dark areas. Didn't see that in Shattered Memories.

ITT: OT plays amnesia in the middle of the day, in a crowded room, while also watching tv and blasting music.

It's not everyones cup of tea but if you really get into it i.e. play at midnight, in an empty house, in the middle of nowhere, with the lights off and epic surround sound and the doors to your house unlocked, then it sort of takes on a life of its own.

If only horror was that easy in video games.
In a film, the director can tightly edit it so you never see the monster. In Amnesia, I know there is nothing there. It doesn't scare me the slightest that a puddle is killing me. I'm sorry.

I say playing any horror games around friends in a lighted room takes away from the atmosphere. The point of horror games/horror movies is to be immerse in it.

That's fine, it's your opinion...but your logic has quite a few holes.

I mean, "In a film the director can tightly edit so you never see the monster" this is true...who's to say that they never did the same thing for Amneisa? The whole point is that you don't see the monster and when you finally see it, it's too late.

The unknown is a beast that has haunted many a novels and movies before and in Amneisa...it is put to it's fullest extent.

But in Amensia, I know it's a game right? So I know that they didn't want me to see what was in the water right? So I know theres actually nothing in the water. Dieing via invisilbe thing in water isn't exactly scary in a game atleast. It could be done maybe, but Amensia didn't really pull it off for me in that example.

If that's the case then all horror in a game is bad. I know it's a game. I KNOW I can quit out of it at any time. I KNOW I can get up and flip the lights on. I KNOW I am safe from the game.

Besides, they didn't want you to see it because it is NOTHING. It is your imagination that is doing it...that and maybe it is some dark hidden creature of the water. Either way, it worked....for me.

I was playing it at a friend's house... and I have to say, I'm not getting it. Don't get me wrong, it has a great atmosphere, but why do so many people think it's "horrifying?" There are two types of monsters and one of them is invisible. To be perfectly honest, I found the game to be about as scary as Silent Hill Shattered Memories. (That is to say, not very.)

Why do so many people think it's scary?

For me playing a horror game or movie I need to let myself be scared. I have to let go of my general preconceptions of my general safety and loose myself in the media for it to take full effect. If you resist it, you will never get the effect.

so when comparing exclusives by platform amnesia is never included since its only an indie game?

seems like a pretty blatant double standard.

No, it can't be....it's not true....THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE!

because an indie game should be compared to exclusive games like Gears3 right? Any core gamer whether console or PC isn't that stupid.

Why not? The game play In Amnesia > Gears3 for what they offer.

Yeah play it by yourself at midnight with noise canceling headphones on and youll see why its scary. I wouldn't say its horrifying but it is definitely suspenseful on an extreme level. playing it at 3 in the morning with all the lights off was one of the scariest gaming experiences ive ever had

its not scary or good, just a PC exclusive.

and like most exclusives, is incredibly overhyped.

But unlike most exclusives, sells poorly, because even PC gamers dont like the game.

The monster was the least scary thing that game had to offer.

It was the atmosphere that got me. If you can get yourself fully immersed into the game while walking around the torture chambers, and you begin to see the images of what happened there as you read about it, and hear the sounds it will eff you up.

My mind may still be a little twisted.

This is like saying "What's so funny about Portal?" or "What's so hot about Lara Croft?" It's as subjective as you can get. Either you have the intended reaction or you don't, so why argue?

Whatthelol? Silent Hill 2 is the least scariest of the first four Silent Hill games. It may arguably be the best, or the most fan favourite, but the original SH, the third one, and a significant chunk of the fourth have a way bigger scare factor than SH2.

Single player games are never as good at a friends house, unless its a really good friend (read: like family) who shuts the **** up and lets you get absorbed into the game. Amnesia needs to be played alone in the dark with nobody looking over your shoulder so you can relax (Im sure you made a conscious effort to not jump or anything so you didn't look like a tw@t).

I think i prefer this type of game more then the games like deadspace, when one have the ability to use a gun or something i think it lowers the "horror" factor because you are mostly not in danger.

There's not a video game in existence that's scary unless you immerse yourself in it. Even if it comes close, horror games are usually a one-trick pony.

Edit:

When I'm playing with friends, there's no way I'm getting immersed in a game because all the chitchat keeps me in the real-world. When I play a game alone, then my imagination and lack of distraction can ease me into the game world.

Having no way to fight the monsters is really what made Amnesia scary for me. Even when I'm scared sh******* playing Silent Hill or something, standing in a corner with my gun drawn makes me feel a lot better. Can't do that in Amnesia.

So cheap scares? I want it...but I'm not a fan of the whole 'monster in cupboard down long hallway' routine? (Probably Penumbra first)

It's a really tense and atmospheric game, I can imagine it being less effective with friends.

If you want to be scared, Get a PS2, grab a copy of Echo Night: Beyond and try not to go into cardiac arrest. That game is by far the scariest game created. It makes Silent Hill, Amnesia, F.E.A.R., Fatal Frame, etc look like Candyland.

the Same applies for Echo Njght. There is no way to fight them so you truly do have to survive and trust me, Echo Night: Beyond scares the crap out of Amnesia by a mile.

I beat the game in six hours. It's really not that scary.... All it does is make you solves puzzles to distracted you then when your done a monster appears. It becomes very predictable. It also can be annoying because some times its unclear what to do.

Okay, I'm warning you, do not throw your controller when you get scared. I've had that happen when I let a friend play mine. He literally got THAT scared. He was truly traumatized for a month afterward, No joking.

Same here. I've been playing horror game since that same time and Echo Night: Beyond is the only game tjat scared me. Fatal Frame didn't, Amnesia didn't, Silent Hill is jist funny to me (especially part 2 when you get the pole and cripple the winged monsters to where they're helpless), F.E.A.R didn't do much for me, The Original RE got me when the dog jumped through the window , The Calling was decent but wasn't enough, Dead Space really isn't horror to me even though the atmosphere is nice, The New RE are not horror games, Ju-on The Grudge actually has it's parts but overall fails in comparison to Echo Night, Ku-on has the Fatal Frame feel but just doesn't scare me, and others. Trust me, Echo Night: Beyond is no joke. And it looks great for a PS2 game.

Cool. I can honestly say, It had me on edge for most of the game. The visuals are really impressive. I couldn't believe it was on PS2 actually. It looks that good. I'm intriuged to hear your experience with it when you're done.
