[QUOTE="nini200"] Same here. I've been playing horror game since that same time and Echo Night: Beyond is the only game tjat scared me. Fatal Frame didn't, Amnesia didn't, Silent Hill is jist funny to me (especially part 2 when you get the pole and cripple the winged monsters to where they're helpless), F.E.A.R didn't do much for me, The Original RE got me when the dog jumped through the window , The Calling was decent but wasn't enough, Dead Space really isn't horror to me even though the atmosphere is nice, The New RE are not horror games, Ju-on The Grudge actually has it's parts but overall fails in comparison to Echo Night, Ku-on has the Fatal Frame feel but just doesn't scare me, and others. Trust me, Echo Night: Beyond is no joke. And it looks great for a PS2 game.

Play it by yourself, in the dark, with either good speakers or a headset on

BPoole96

Nailed it in the first reply.

All these idiots claiming it's not scary and most play it in the day or with friends. How the hell is that supposed to scare you at all? Alone at night with no lights and headphones and you WILL get scared at least a little

its not scary or good, just a PC exclusive.

and like most exclusives, is incredibly overhyped.

But unlike most exclusives, sells poorly, because even PC gamers dont like the game.

SauceKing

Wrong.

It was hyped as much as it should have been.

It didn't sell poorly.

no games scare me  and thats no lie.games mostly have creepy atmosphere like hmmm

fatal frame 2:it hits a level of eery and creepy that i like the feeling of

siren:has a timed tention on things the zombies never die and you are timed to complete the game

silent hill1:midwitch elementry had it's own taste of creepy and just eery music

resident evi:low on supplies which again gives that tention of survival and conserving

vampire bloodlines:that haunted mansion pulled ever trick in the book >.>

all games have had those elements of what makes a game scary but none have pulled off scaring me.they each have one good element.

Over half a year ago it was already at 400k in sales. http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/15/amnesia-the-dark-descent-scares-up-400-000-in-sales/ So by now it's at least over 500k. That's pretty good for an indie game with almost no advertising.

EXACTLY!

It did better than Demon Souls on the PS3! And Demon souls had a MUCH larger development and marketing budget!

My only problem was I had way more supplies than I needed half way through the game so I felt less in danger, most enemies were also extremely easy to avoid and thats not good when its mostly a hide & seek game. Otherwise it was amazing for its atmosphere alone. I don't get why some people bash Dead Space to promote Amnesia when DS is the better, scarier game.

Wait. You said you had more supplies in Amnesia which made you feel less scared and then you said Dead space was a scarier game? There is so much wrong with that.

Dead space is a better game overall I can understand but to say it's scarier is a bit much. I didn't find Dead Space remotely scary. It's just cool gorey fun

I didn't like Dead Space that much because I would always compare it to RE4.

I was playing it at a friend's house... and I have to say, I'm not getting it. Don't get me wrong, it has a great atmosphere, but why do so many people think it's "horrifying?" There are two types of monsters and one of them is invisible. To be perfectly honest, I found the game to be about as scary as Silent Hill Shattered Memories. (That is to say, not very.)

Why do so many people think it's scary?

SW__Troll

Why not just watch youtube videos at that point?

I actually am still scared of watching Fatal Frame playthroughs. I was afraid of Silent Hill as well, but I've watched them like 4-5+ times. Amnesia isn't that scary, it just gives you tension.

Alot of the horror games that come out now aren't scary at all. They are very predictable as well.

To be honest, the msot scared I have ever been in a game was the Shalebridge Cradle level in Thief Deadly Shadows. Played alone but during the daytime. The effects and atmosphere in that are perhaps the best ever in a horror section of a game.

Nothing is scary if you cannot suspend your disbelief. Playing it at a friend's place, with them in the room, most likely with the light on... will not help suspend disbelief.

To be perfectly honest, even if I'm alone in the dark, I have a tough time suspending my disbelief. For some reason, atmospheric effects have a hard time getting to me; I know the only time the character is in danger is from the monsters/ enemies. Even in Thief Deadly Shadows, where I was sufficiently creeped out as hell, I wasn't truly scared.

Not everyone can do it, and not everyone is affected to the same degree. I remember back in 2005, I played Doom 3 for the first time and could barely keep playing I was so freaked out (it took about a year got me to commit to it and go through it all). A couple years ago, I got Dead Space (which is almost the same game atmospherically) and got bored it was so un-scary (despite loving the anime) and didn't even finish it. Have you tried System Shock 2?

If that's the case then all horror in a game is bad. I know it's a game. I KNOW I can quit out of it at any time. I KNOW I can get up and flip the lights on. I KNOW I am safe from the game.

Besides, they didn't want you to see it because it is NOTHING. It is your imagination that is doing it...that and maybe it is some dark hidden creature of the water. Either way, it worked....for me.

DragonfireXZ95

Well that's good

Don't get me wrong, I did get scared quite a few times. But I just wasn't as scared as everyone else. Even my mates who played it were screaming (ofcourse they told me, they played alone the properway) But I guess I'm just not as phased by those types of scares

The game uses your imagination against you. If you don't have a good imagination, it wouldn't faze you very much either.

Oh so it's my imagination that's limiting me? No it's not.

I've played Silent Hill, and my imagination really did run wild. The atmosphere in that is a million times scarier than Amnesia. Don't say it's my "imagination" it's just the game failed to scare me throughout so much.

I still find Doom 3 quite scary. Dead Space with 5.1 surround sound is an awesome experience as well. It's like a totally different game. And yet I didn't find Amnesia as scary as Doom 3. Doom 3 may indeed have been more of the shocking type of horror and jump scares but even the atmosphere had me more scared.

2 very distinct moments scared me in MGS1. When you are about to face Psycho mantis and you hear that creepy ass music and his voice were very eerie feeling. Also the scene when you hear ninja butchering everyone in the hallway and then you enter it and see what happened. Then the guys comes from aroud the corner and says "It's-it's a Ghost" that was creepy

Yeah,definitely.
And in The Twin Snakes,Mantis was telling me what games I had played.

so when comparing exclusives by platform amnesia is never included since its only an indie game?

seems like a pretty blatant double standard.

SauceKing

So does it need to have 2 million in sales before it's considered a good game in your opinion? Popularity=/=quality. It did pretty well for an indie game with little to no advertisement whatsoever.

popularity =/= quality.

but you cant have your cake and eat it too. Is it a PC exclusive held to the same standards as console exclusives, or is it not? You have to pick one.

a non indie exclusive, yeah it is, an indie game? no. seriously you are comparing indie tittles to big house tittles that had like 3 times the budget of the indie tittle just for advertising. thats like saying that a 70kg world boxing champion is bad because he cant beat the 90kg world champion.

I used to get scared by games but I have seen things that are scarier than fiction to get scared at video games. I might still get surprised but that is different from being scared. A game like Silent Hill 3 doesn't scare me but it is still disturbing to play and leaves me with a morbid feeling after playing certain parts of it.

its not scary or good, just a PC exclusive.

and like most exclusives, is incredibly overhyped.

But unlike most exclusives, sells poorly, because even PC gamers dont like the game.

Jebus213

Amnesia sold poorly?

and that's why we look down on console gamers. This is there logic: If I don't know anything about something then it sucks and it does bad.

how about not lumping us all together, k?

and you look up to me young man....

As a horror fanatic, I LOVED this game. It was scary to begin with, but if you're like me and get good at games quickly it becomes less freightning really quickly. Once you realize how to operate the mansion and deal with the monsters you're not as scared. I would have liked some more challenge as it went on, but the beginning was fantastic, especially the water monster. : )

Quit honestly if you wand to enjoy a game like that, you HAVE to play it by yourself. Friends just laugh and make fun of the game, especially all the scary parts, totally destroying the enjoyment. My friends do that all the time with horror movies and it's really annoying. They'll just laugh and talk crap about scary scenes and it detracts from the experience.

2 very distinct moments scared me in MGS1. When you are about to face Psycho mantis and you hear that creepy ass music and his voice were very eerie feeling. Also the scene when you hear ninja butchering everyone in the hallway and then you enter it and see what happened. Then the guys comes from aroud the corner and says "It's-it's a Ghost" that was creepy

freedomfreak

Yeah,definitely.
And in The Twin Snakes,Mantis was telling me what games I had played.

"I see you've been playing Super Mario Sunshine"

:|

That's ... creepy.

I thought it was crazy first time I played him and he made my controller move. That's the kind of boss you remember forever

Very true.Mantis was an insane fvck. Also lol@MGS4 boss that made your controller vibrate, but it couldn't,because Sony took out the vibration.

yeah

but MGS4's boss fights were nowhere near the level of genius and innovation that MGS1's were. But let's not turn this into thatkind of thread :P

Yeah 3 is the best for me too. I liked the backstories to the Beauties too but I wish they were woven into the game better instead of getting a monologue from Drebin every single time. It was a poor way to explain everything. But I guess so much time went into tech and mechanics that the story suffered a bit. For me it did anyway. MGS3 has the strongest story, gameplay and setting.

Damn I did it again :P

I ask myself the same question. How is that game scary? Seriously, are the people playing it just big f'n babies? Because IF that game scares you..then yes....you should be ashamed of yourself. I think people just over react to hype the game.

[QUOTE="tomarlyn"]My only problem was I had way more supplies than I needed half way through the game so I felt less in danger, most enemies were also extremely easy to avoid and thats not good when its mostly a hide & seek game. Otherwise it was amazing for its atmosphere alone. I don't get why some people bash Dead Space to promote Amnesia when DS is the better, scarier game.seanmcloughlin

I started DS1 on hard difficulty and DS2 on survivalist before bumping it up to zealot. Supplies were hard to come by and survival was tough, much tougher than Amnesia. In DS1 I sold quite a few upgrade nodes just to top up my health or be able to reload. Some people seem to prefer DS with a forgiving difficulty, run around playing it like a shooter, blasting anything that moves, then complain its too much of a shooter. Dumbasses. Dead Space is scarier

All of those things make it harder but they don't necessarily make it scarier. For me, a game is much scarier if it successfully pulls off a foreboding atmosphere than if it builds tension through lack of supply. Running out of ammo on my BFG isn't quite as scary as never having the means to defend yourself or understand the horrors around you.

I like how you're calling people dumbasses, but you were scared by a Dead Space game.

Amnesia is no scarier than Dark Souls or Demons Souls even playing the way the devs requested during the game start. It relies on rising tension and uncertainty but Dark Souls did that better without even meaning to, for me at least.

Bumping up the difficulty doesn't make a game scarier just makes it harder. The fact that DS enemies aren't scary to begin with is the problem. And you have a huge arsenal of weapons to choose from. along with being able to slow guys down and fire telekinetic stuff too. It's not a survival horror game it's more action oriented.

Playing Amnesia on your own in the dark with headphones on is far scarier than Dead Space. I felt myself very creeped out just walking around with no enemies on screen. And its run or die that's all. How can that be less scary?

Just as a matter of interest did you actually immerse yourself in Amnesia like I just said? or are you another who played it in the day time?

I think it's all down to the same principles of hopelessness and forboding and how weak you feel. Amnesia does it cos you have no weapons and die easily. The souls games do it by giving you weapons but still dying very easily and doing almost no damage to the enemies.
