Honestly the only reason people consider it an RPG over FPS is because of the developer. Look at Deus Ex, its widly known as an FPS, because its developer was known for action games. Yet it has far more RPG elements then Mass Effect.

pelvist

ME2 is an action game with RPG elements. It can't compete with a pure RPG. Period. The posibilities of role playing on ME2 are very limited, that's why many of us call it "RPG Lite".

Right, its an RPG then...

Golden Sun, really? Must not have played much before GBA then, because I can think of about four RPGs I prefer on PS1.

Speaking of which: Grandia is the greatest RPG of all time. You heard me.

Either FFX or Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. Both are flawless in my opinion.

Accrding to IGN its an RPG, Gametrailers says its an RPG too, on G4.com its an RPG, at Gamestop they say its an RPG, Xbox.com also say its an RPG, on Biowares own website they say its an RPG while also under accolades quoteing Eurogamer on "BioWare's greatest success in Mass Effect 2 has been taking a complex RPG and making it effortless to understand, play and enjoy on a constant basis…", 1UP and IGN also gave Mass effect 2 an award for best role playing game at E3.

However you want to put it, its an RPG.

BTW, Half-Life is a FPS.

pelvist

It's hardly an RPG though. I mean yeah you can make your character's face and you can give a BS back story and "OMG CHOICES!" You'll still eventually get to the same outcome, the Same ending.....It's a Thrid Person shooter. I'm pretty sure most of those sites were just basing it off of Bioware's past. But don't take this the wrong way, this makes BioWare more capable to do more things than just RPGs. (but seriously I find Mass Effect 2 a poor RPG but a Great TPS.)

That's pure BioWare rubbish. BioWare promised us that ME1 choices will modify ME2 events, but well, IT DIDN'T, and I'm sure the same will happen to ME2.

I just find it absolutely hilarious how Mass Effect is up there but not KOTOR, heck KOTOR trashes almost all of those titles IMO.

Mass Effects plot isn't anything amazing at all, not even close to that of KOTOR. Its a generic "save world from evil killer robots" movie plot with a rather above-average concept to it. What it DOES have however is a great universe, but Star Wars already has that.

To each his own. I'm not going to say ME's plot is the greatest but to create it's own believeable universe should be a feat all of its own. I'm griping more towards ME:2's gameplay, is the reason I listed it :P.

Gotta go with Morrowind. I love all the old Infinity engine games, and Dragon Age, but Morrowind tops them all for me.

I'm really surprised to see Planescape Torment doing this well, I thought Baldur's Gate 2 would win this easily.

I'll vote for the Tales series. But if I had to specify a single game, it'd be Tales of the Abyss.

Planscape Torment is definitely top 10, but it is not the greatest RPG ever. Really, the impact it had on the industry is quite small. For what it was, it was great. Baldur's Gate II may not be as well written, but its the better game. It had mor eimpact as well.

Top 10 RPGs

1. Final Fantasy VI

2. Chrono Trigger

3. Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar

4. Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn (and the Throne of Bhaal)

5. I put the first 2 Fallouts as one game, Fallout 2 is basically an expansion really

6. Ultima VII: The Black Gate and The Serpent's Isle

7. Knights of the Old Republic

8. Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

9. Suikoden II (its that good)

10. Planescape Torment

Next 5 would be

11. Final Fantasy IV

12. Deus Ex

13. Baldur's Gate

14. The Witcher

15. Pools of Radiance

Ok to 20

16. Fallout 3

17. Mass Effect 2 (may rise however, I am looking towards ME3 to rank high right now)

18. Ultima V: Warriors of Destiny

19. Secret of Mana

20. Baldur's Gate

(but seriously I find Mass Effect 2 a poor RPG but a Great TPS.)

just looked on Youtube. Yeah you're right.

I still find it hard to put this game with the likes of something like Final Fantasy or Chrono Trigger.

I vote for Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars just because it looked fantastic!

Planscape Torment is definitely top 10, but it is not the greatest RPG ever. Really, the impact it had on the industry is quite small. For what it was, it was great. Baldur's Gate II may not be as well written, but its the better game. It had mor eimpact as well.

Top 10 RPGs

1. Final Fantasy VI

2. Chrono Trigger

3. Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar

4. Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn (and the Throne of Bhaal)

5. I put the first 2 Fallouts as one game, Fallout 2 is basically an expansion really

6. Ultima VII: The Black Gate and The Serpent's Isle

7. Knights of the Old Republic

8. Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

9. Suikoden II (its that good)

10. Planescape Torment

Next 5 would be

11. Final Fantasy IV

12. Deus Ex

13. Baldur's Gate

14. The Witcher

15. Pools of Radiance

Ok to 20

16. Fallout 3

17. Mass Effect 2 (may rise however, I am looking towards ME3 to rank high right now)

18. Ultima V: Warriors of Destiny

19. Secret of Mana

20. Baldur's Gate

Wow, I cannot disagree more with a human being, are you a human being right? Oblivion before Planescape??? Are you nuts? Also impact on what??? Because last time I check Planescape and FO2 are probably the closest to a real role playing you can get.

One, there is more than one ending. Two, characters die and don't join you. The choices you make not only affect the game you're playing, but the next one. You don't just choose your player, you choose his or her path, and upgrade until they completely suit you.

The one thing making the RPG genre questionable in Mass Effect is the battle dynamics, and RPGs have never ever been afraid to mix it up anyway. It's an RPG where it matters, not as deep as, say, Shadows of Amn, but an RPG nonetheless.

just looked on Youtube. Yeah you're right.

I still find it hard to put this game with the likes of something like Final Fantasy or Chrono Trigger.

You're complaining about the choices in ME2 and then putting up a game like Corridor Fantasy as an example of a good RPG? You don't choose your character, you don't have any choice in the story, you upgrade what you are told to and go where you are told to and pretty much click X the whole game. Mass Effect is more of an RPG than Corridor Fantasy will ever be.

If you had to look up on youtube to find out whether I was correct what on earth are you making such concrete judgements on it for? You complain about things you obviously don't know much about.
