I dont think any of them will quite make the coveted 10. I think it will be a suprise indie game like journey was. Only game that deserved a 10 this year for me was/is mgsv.

@blueinheaven: you keep calling other people names, yet they have more experience in games than you.

Tell me, what games plays similarly to Xeodrifter on your Amiga? Or Divinity Original Sin? Or Spelunky?

GameSpot have already given three 10s this year alone, more than the number of 10s they've handed out in the previous five years combined. Giving yet another 10 this year would be overkill...

In other words, I don't think any other game this year will be getting a 10.

Out of that list? Maybe Fallout 4. There's a few in there that I think will definitely be AAA, but not a 10.

How do you know what experience I have in games? You don't know shit pal. You assume I have no experience because I'm not rolling along with the indie craze, implying people who don't want to play crappy looking clones of games they played 25 years ago are 'missing' something.

I mentioned the Amiga when you mentioned Xeodrifter. There are tons of similar arcade games, start with Turrican II and work your way around from there. Divinity OS is created by an established studio they are not typical indie it's a highly polished modernised take on old school RPG's not a 16 bit clone of some incredibly basic arcade game.

If you play Divinity OS I shouldn't have to explain that to you, yet here we are all the same.

I know there are some great indie games out there but the overwhelming majority of them are cynical cash-ins on titles that were created many moons ago and they look ugly as sin to boot. If you're happy playing that stuff that's absolutely fine but to judge other people negatively because they're not interested in it is just ridiculous.

Witcher 3, Risen 3, Sovereign King, Until Dawn, Mad Max, Final Fantasy X PS4, Vanishing of Ethan Carter PC (just getting round to it now) and soon Halo 5, Uncharted Trilogy, the list of games I want to play is endless and I don't have anything close to enough time to play them all so I choose not to waste my time on indie stuff that a) looks awful and b) for the most part is a 'take' on a game I played many years ago.

@blueinheaven: Divinity is definitely an indie. Lrn engrish

It's funny, everyone else seems to be able to enjoy indies. Your grumpy old man rhetoric is amazing man. I give you props on how you're able to keep it up on a video game forum out of all places. Ignorance is bliss!

Have a good day man. I can help you find anger management classes in your location if needed. PM me for that.

'Divinity OS is created by an established studio they are not typical indie'. You're the one who needs the English lessons.

You keep bleating on about anger and rage when there is none on display. I could help you with your reading comprehension difficulties but frankly, I can't be arsed. Sorry.

Surprised so many people say Zelda. Other than LBW, GS has been overly harsh on the last few releases. My vote is GTA6.

Hm?

Since 2005:

  • The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap- 9.1
  • The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess- 8.8
  • The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass- 9
  • The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks- 8.5
  • The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword- 7.5
  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds- 9 (GotY)

Honestly, I would say just about all of those scores were well deserved, and that Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks were honestly overrated.

When Zelda does well, Gamespot scores it well. I imagine if the Wii U game is actually all that it is being cracked up to be, it will get a good score appropriately as well.

Which makes sense, now that there are no more decimal points.

I also prefer it this way, 10 should be an attainable score, rather than this mythical status that can never be achieved, or else what is the point?

I don't think this game has a big chance of scoring a 10.

Games stuck in development (hell) for so long tend to end up being lacklustre.

I can only think of one game that's been in development for a very long time (6 years) that turned out amazing and that's Half Life2. But it's far from the norm.

You also have to remember that Half-Life 2's source code was stolen in the beginning of 2003 through Gabe Newell's email which had a bunch of different story and level elements in it that Valve had to go back and change as to not ruin the game for anyone who saw these things, it got delayed over a year because of that hack.

Fallout 4 will not get a perfect 10 just from lack of graphics alone.

Halo 5 missing, gears 4 missing (yeah i know but its still 'possible') quantum break missing... seems that it will be ps4 or nothing on this poll.

No, the source code that got leaked was very bare bones. It barely contained anything, let alone spoilers.

It was just levels you could load into, couldn't do much. So there was nothing in the way of spoilers.

The leak showed that HL2 was NOT ready in 2003. Even if Valve kept claiming it would be.

The leak did not set back the development of HL2. It was a leak of an old build, barely containing much.

Gaming politics, it's not about what game will be exceptionally excellent. It's about which series, studios, and developers, has had half the noses here up their ass. That's MGS, that's The Witcher. Find me a series with such a collective brown-nosed rapport and I'll show you your next 10/10.

It was bare bones to a degree, you could played multiple different levels but you had to launch them with scripts and commands, if you didn't know all of them you missed out on a lot. There was some dialog, story elements, character sequences, enemies, map layouts, it was essentially an alpha build of the game that was very scattered. Also it wasn't a reflection of the games actual state in 2003, this build was much earlier but it was delayed not only because of the leak, but also because it wasn't where they wanted it to be and moral in the studio was low after it, that leak screwed up a lot.

I don't know if you ever actually played it or if you're just parroting internet discussions, but I had it hours after it got leaked and went through the entire build from top to bottom. I was also a purchaser of a 9800XT which if you don't remember came with a free voucher for Half-Life 2, I was one of the thousands of very pissed off customers who was promised the game in 2003 and had to wait, so my research was very in depth.

Fallout 4 will probably be amazing but I have my doubts it will get a 10 from gamespot .. its in the realm of possibility but unlikely I think.

Persona 5 no way in hell, it happens all the time with most games that are very japan focused they'll get docked for being weird or in personas case being too juvenile

Persona 5 8 maximum whoever reviews it won't understand the appeal at all.

FO4 is unlikely to be amazing in any way, FO3 sucked donkey balls, New Vegas was amazing but that team is not making FO4.

Whoa your one of the first people I talked to who disliked Fallout 3 that much O.O what about it did you not like ? @blueinheaven

I played it twice once on 360 in summer 2009 then once on ps3 about 2 years later .. I guess opinions on games are subjective in the end but I'm still interested in your reasoning behind yours

Ah yes, this makes perfect sense.

So you were the one behind the leak, huh ?

I got into gaming with Half Life. It's still to this day one of my favourite games and it's what made gaming more for me than just something to burn time with. So yeah, I followed everything in the development of Half Life 2.

My older brother got a hold of the build. It was indeed an older build. We played around a bit in it, some levels were more complete than others. You could see some weapons (actual weapons models that made it into the game) as well as some actual levels... a part of ravenholm I remember.

LMAO, this was twelve years ago. I didn't want to play the leak, but I was just too stoked to play the sequel of my number 1 game, that I did dip into it. But not match.

Didn't see any of the story or other characters... I mean I don't believe they had to rewrite story for that. As people had to go through great lenghts to see any of it play out...

Did you read the book: Raising the Bar ? On the development of Half Life 2 ? Very insightful.

That didnt stop GS from giving a 10 to MGSV. Though in that case we are dealing with microtransactions and review camps.

Very nice indeed !

When I activated Half Life 1 on steam back in '03 in anticipation of the new one coming out, I got a whole bunch of other games with it.

One of those was Day of Defeat. I really got into that. Along with a few other shooters. All of them WW2 shooters, but all had a unique style to them. Day of Defeat was really about different classes and some teamplay.

I'm sad that looking back, many years later, Valve has moved on from those games; But I'll always have fond memories of them.

Something different: With so many recognizable characters in your avatar... It's Prince of Persia that caught my eye... Where is that clip/gif from ?

Something different: With so many recognizable characters in your avatar... It's Prince of Persia that caught my eye... Where is that clip/gif from ?

I've been a part of Steam since 2002 when it was in beta and more so WON before Steam when Valve's multiplayer network was hosted through it. All of those games were given to people who activated any Valve game as a bonus or thank you from them, it was just a perk. Since I had multiple different games I created a few accounts due to getting all of the games on them.

It's actually from this Xbox One trailer, honestly one of my favorite trailers ever made now.

How interesting. Well, I was very happy with those games. It started off my steam library, and I'm at around 500 now.

Do you remember the small 2D game that came out on Steam before Half Life 2, starring gordon freeman?

Heh, this is my steam profile by the way, add me if you want :)

Does it show on yours you joined in 2002 ? ^^

I'll give it a watch, thanks !

I just thought it was dull. Dreary characters and boring quests. New Vegas was so much better. They might surprise us with FO4 but from what I've seen so far it looks less like an RPG and more like an all-out action game with light RPG elements.

It still might be a fun game, fingers crossed etc.

Yeah you're talking about Codename Gordon haha, I remember that game.

No, the accounts used for that period were just test accounts, I registered my actual account like an hour after the platform went live.

Looking at your profile you actually joined in 2004, about five and a half months after launch.

This is my profile, I don't really add people at random, it's nothing personal, I just stick to people I play CS with mostly.

No problem, I understand you want a list of people to play CS with.

You still play the older CS ? I tried CS, Condition Zero and Source a little bit. However, Day of Defeat turned out to be my online go-to game.

You have some nice screenshots on your account !

And yeah, I must've joined in 2004 if Steam says so... But on the other hand I was on steam among the first back when the platform launched (and I thought that was in '03).

Nice post. Too many people have the attitude "What I like = good, what I do not like = crap."

I'm tired of gaming hipsters on gaming websites. They're the stereotypical group that is the smallest but gets the most attention.

Since Kevin van Ord left, I can easily see Fallout 4 hitting 10.

And it makes me sick.

You say this like Van Ord wasn't the guy who gave Skyrim and Fallout 3 9's, so if Fallout 4 had some sappy try hard "games are art" story to go with it, it wouldn't have gotten a 10 from him.

So it is your belief that it's impossible in this day and age to find games with great graphics AND great gameplay so you just play games from the 80s instead?

How do you get by in life being so stupid? Do you have an adult helping you cross the road when you leave your house?

Not really his point, it's the part where majority of complaints stem from "they look like shit visually", which whatever, ignoring even your basic ability to appreciate more stylistic visual direction to polygon counts.

Indie games are a smaller market type of game we don't get anymore in the retail space, because it's just no longer financially plausible to make the middle market type of games of previous years. You know the types that started as a Witcher 1 that eventually evolved into a triple A production in The Witcher 3. In an industry where the triple A space primarily built on production value flash over actual gameplay substance, and a recent trend of gameplay per square inch (make that shit open world and long) as opposed to actual excellent gameplay that is well paced start to finish. The indie space and the middle market is a boon.

That and it covers way too much range at this point. Divinity Original Sin is an indie game more or less, ditto for what Yooka-Laylee is going to be. Plus the other indie stuff while you like making the snes comparison, ignores that

A: while the classics of that era are legit fantastic, there are plenty of other games from that era that simply aren't worth playing
B: that 2d games needed to die out, when there are so many advantages to being a 2d game.

Plus a lot of the indie scenes takes modern concepts on those older 2d styled games and creates something genuinely new and different, there isn't a game on the Snes that gives you everything Hotline Miami has to offer, not in gameplay, and certainly not what it conveys. Dismissing an entire space because of its visual short comings is pretty toxic, and this medium has been more hurt by the triple A model, than anything else.

Honestly none of these... I think 10/10 should be reserved for games that have a very good storyline, solid gameplay, beautiful graphics and to reiterate, a meaningful story is a must. The Witcher 3, MGS4 and 5 well and truly deserved the perfect score others like Journey really shouldn't have that score. Another game which also deserved 10/10 was The Last of Us, perhaps not the PS3 version as I would consider 20-26fps unplayable however the remastered version was perfection. Uncharted is a beautiful game and has very enjoyable gameplay however I don't think it is 10/10 material unlike the mentioned 4 games, it has an interesting enough storyline however not memorable, deep or meaniful however the gameplay is definitely solid and graphics are arguably the best so Uncharted 4 should be a 9.5 if the game turns out as shown in the recent trailers. I am a PC gamer and I like all my games on the one system however games like MGS4/5 and The Last of Us are experiences anyone who calls themselves a gamer shouldn't miss.

Like everyone else who discusses this subject with me you fail to acknowledge that I've recognised on many occasions there are great indie titles out there. I don't hate indie games just because they are indie I just don't like this trend to glorify games that are firmly rooted in the past and yes they do in fact blow chunks visually more often than not which does not help.

Of course there are exceptions to the rule. Games like Divinity I have championed on here and elsewhere but you are implying this kind of quality is common with most indies when the opposite is true. Most indie games are nowhere even close to qualifying as what you call the middle market. I know exactly the kind of games you mean: titles that don't have the huge budget of AAA devs but are still great games to play like Divinity, Shadowrun, Pillars, Vanishing of Ethan Carter probably qualifies as indie I don't know my point is yes those excellent indies are out there but 95 per cent of it is just junk to my eyes.

Look at the review sections on GS or IGN alone and you'll see no end of 16 bit 'me too' indie games cashing in on the current craze and while I accept a lot of people have fully bought into this the same can't be said for people like you and Blabadon who simply can't accept there are people like me who just have no time for it.

It's not entirely dissimilar to the nonsense you see between rival console fanboys. People seem to be wearing the fact they are into indies like a badge of honour which I find more than a tad amusing for a multitude of reasons.

Your other point re: shit open world games I will agree with though I'm not sure it's entirely relevant to this discussion. I am so tired of open world RPG's that say go anywhere anytime and do anything and MASSIVELY outlevel the vast majority of content by doing so. It's beyond stupid, even W3 does it.

So far it's been multiplats. So I would guess a multiplat. But in terms of exclusives, I'd say UC4.

I am so tired of open world RPG's that say go anywhere anytime and do anything and MASSIVELY outlevel the vast majority of content by doing so. It's beyond stupid, even W3 does it.

It's the utter dismissal of the 2d stuff that is what becomes irritating, because even the stuff you like, Pillars of Eternity being a big one, it offers nothing new in comparison. Divinity I can get behind it takes those old type of games, and looks back and says what can we do now with that type of game that they couldn't do back then. And boom we got Divinity's combat engine, Pillars? It's literally a copy and paste of what Baldur's Gate 2 and Icewind Dale were, it doesn't really offer its own spin on anything.

Do some really fluffy indie games get praise they don't deserve? I wouldn't disagree with that, Gone Home fails to make its narrative work, The Unfinished Swan is painfully simplistic, and Hohokum is well hokum. But Mark of the Ninja, Hotline Miami, and what have you. The game doesn't appeal to you is whatever, It's the part where your ignore their actual merit. Because go back to the Snes (and I do play plenty of snes games still) doesn't really work, because none of them actually play like a Mark of the Ninja.

Likewise the most aspect is its own fallacy. Most is obviously going to suck, most games suck (not the games we obviously end up purchasing since we do our homework, but in general what gets pumped out), and that goes double for triple A games. There are plenty of straight up vapid triple A games that get by on production value over actual gameplay substance, which is why so many people latched on to those 2d indie games. They nail the gameplay, do they necessarily stack favorably when a retail game actually provides the goods gameplay wise? Ala Bloodborne, Bayonetta, or recently Metal Gear? No, not really. But those just as much of an exception to the rule as anything these days.
