Not really his point, it's the part where majority of complaints stem from "they look like shit visually", which whatever, ignoring even your basic ability to appreciate more stylistic visual direction to polygon counts.

Indie games are a smaller market type of game we don't get anymore in the retail space, because it's just no longer financially plausible to make the middle market type of games of previous years. You know the types that started as a Witcher 1 that eventually evolved into a triple A production in The Witcher 3. In an industry where the triple A space primarily built on production value flash over actual gameplay substance, and a recent trend of gameplay per square inch (make that shit open world and long) as opposed to actual excellent gameplay that is well paced start to finish. The indie space and the middle market is a boon.

That and it covers way too much range at this point. Divinity Original Sin is an indie game more or less, ditto for what Yooka-Laylee is going to be. Plus the other indie stuff while you like making the snes comparison, ignores that

A: while the classics of that era are legit fantastic, there are plenty of other games from that era that simply aren't worth playing

B: that 2d games needed to die out, when there are so many advantages to being a 2d game.

Plus a lot of the indie scenes takes modern concepts on those older 2d styled games and creates something genuinely new and different, there isn't a game on the Snes that gives you everything Hotline Miami has to offer, not in gameplay, and certainly not what it conveys. Dismissing an entire space because of its visual short comings is pretty toxic, and this medium has been more hurt by the triple A model, than anything else.

Like everyone else who discusses this subject with me you fail to acknowledge that I've recognised on many occasions there are great indie titles out there. I don't hate indie games just because they are indie I just don't like this trend to glorify games that are firmly rooted in the past and yes they do in fact blow chunks visually more often than not which does not help.

Of course there are exceptions to the rule. Games like Divinity I have championed on here and elsewhere but you are implying this kind of quality is common with most indies when the opposite is true. Most indie games are nowhere even close to qualifying as what you call the middle market. I know exactly the kind of games you mean: titles that don't have the huge budget of AAA devs but are still great games to play like Divinity, Shadowrun, Pillars, Vanishing of Ethan Carter probably qualifies as indie I don't know my point is yes those excellent indies are out there but 95 per cent of it is just junk to my eyes.

Look at the review sections on GS or IGN alone and you'll see no end of 16 bit 'me too' indie games cashing in on the current craze and while I accept a lot of people have fully bought into this the same can't be said for people like you and Blabadon who simply can't accept there are people like me who just have no time for it.

It's not entirely dissimilar to the nonsense you see between rival console fanboys. People seem to be wearing the fact they are into indies like a badge of honour which I find more than a tad amusing for a multitude of reasons.

Your other point re: shit open world games I will agree with though I'm not sure it's entirely relevant to this discussion. I am so tired of open world RPG's that say go anywhere anytime and do anything and MASSIVELY outlevel the vast majority of content by doing so. It's beyond stupid, even W3 does it.

It's the utter dismissal of the 2d stuff that is what becomes irritating, because even the stuff you like, Pillars of Eternity being a big one, it offers nothing new in comparison. Divinity I can get behind it takes those old type of games, and looks back and says what can we do now with that type of game that they couldn't do back then. And boom we got Divinity's combat engine, Pillars? It's literally a copy and paste of what Baldur's Gate 2 and Icewind Dale were, it doesn't really offer its own spin on anything.

Do some really fluffy indie games get praise they don't deserve? I wouldn't disagree with that, Gone Home fails to make its narrative work, The Unfinished Swan is painfully simplistic, and Hohokum is well hokum. But Mark of the Ninja, Hotline Miami, and what have you. The game doesn't appeal to you is whatever, It's the part where your ignore their actual merit. Because go back to the Snes (and I do play plenty of snes games still) doesn't really work, because none of them actually play like a Mark of the Ninja.

Likewise the most aspect is its own fallacy. Most is obviously going to suck, most games suck (not the games we obviously end up purchasing since we do our homework, but in general what gets pumped out), and that goes double for triple A games. There are plenty of straight up vapid triple A games that get by on production value over actual gameplay substance, which is why so many people latched on to those 2d indie games. They nail the gameplay, do they necessarily stack favorably when a retail game actually provides the goods gameplay wise? Ala Bloodborne, Bayonetta, or recently Metal Gear? No, not really. But those just as much of an exception to the rule as anything these days.

I'm actually a lot more into Divinity than Pillars. I upset UninspiredAsshat by pointing out Pillars had the worst voice-overs in the history of videogames and actually the more I played of Pillars the more I remembered how fucking annoying the combat was in Baldur's Gate 1 and 2.

I'm not going to apologise for dismissing some of the 2D stuff if it looks incredibly dated. Both Divinity and Pillars and even Shadowrun manage to look reasonably modern and aesthetically pleasing they don't look like they should have been on the machine that time forgot. Transistor looks great too. Indie does not have to = ugly.

You have to realise I have been gaming a long time and loved SNES like everyone else and REALLY loved my Amiga but I have been there, seen it, done it more or less. I would like to move on at some point lol.

2D indie games that 'nail the gameplay' will never impress me because I have already played tons of 2D games that nailed gameplay 20 years ago. I have no problem with people who are madly into it now but I have a big problem with indie hipsters thinking they are some kind of special because they have discovered that games can be in 2D like they are some kind of fucking videogame pioneers.

Most likely Uncharted 4. GS tips the sales in Sony's favor. and they already handed out a couple of 10s already... so I think they will be a bit more reserved with Fallout 4. Politics and all that.

Those are the only titles that are 10 material that I can see. this includes Persona 5, Scalebound, The Last Guardian, Tomb Raider and Legend of Zelda.

Is Smash U getting a complete edition anytime soon? No?

Honestly, none of these. Fallout 4 has the secret potential to be underwhelming. TLG looks boring. UC4 looks good from the get-go, but so did UC3. Zelda has me worried based on The Phantom Pain's open world being empty and unnecessary, which is what Hyrule is looking like.

Even I think Bethesda games are garbage I think its most likely going to be Fallout 4 due to its casual mainstream appeal.

@foxhound_fox: But what if it's good?

A good Bethesda game?

At the very least it's going to be buggy as shit upon release. At worst, it's going to be Fallout 3 Redux.

I can't believe people are voting for FO4. Apart from anything else it looks from the trailers like FO3 meets Just Cause and after a bit of a chat they both decide to just make lots of explosions happen.

FO4 will not get a 10 or anywhere close to it, no chance.
