Wrong answer. WRPGs haven't evolved anymore than JRPGs have over the past 20 years.
Honestly.
Both JRPGs and WRPGs have evolved more than people give them credit for. Whether or not the changes are good or bad is subjective.
I generally liked the changes WRPGs had up to around 1997. With 1998 and up, the genre went downhill fast. That doesnt mean all changes have been for the worse, as there have been a few improvements.
JRPGs may have been stagnant for a while. But, there have been a lot of recent improvements in the genre with titles like Valkyria Chronicles, The Last Story (lol Xenoblade, imitating mmos is not how to do it) and The World Ends with You.
What is the obssession wtih Eastern style Pedo animi games. Why does every game revolve around 13 year old girls looking like tramps weilding huge swords. Why do people even watch that garbage. just saying bro

Exactly, each side of the globe prefers their own thing.
What is it with people judging someone's gaming culture and deciding what is "right" or "wrong"? Both the West and the East are guilty of this.
You shouldn't post...ever.Because shooters have gentle learning curves.
Western gamers tend to have short attention spans. They're scared of games with "too many" menus. They're too lazy to learn how to play more complex games like RPGs.
Everyone is in a rush, they want to know how to play a game as soon as they pick up the controller. They don't want to have to take the time to learn how to play.
GeoffZak
[QUOTE="PannicAtack"][QUOTE="GeoffZak"]Right, because Final Fantasy X has so much depth and takes so much time to learn how to play. This is ridiculous - most good first-person shooters do actually require and investment - games like Counter-Strike and Team Fortress 2 require you to learn about the map and about how the weapons work. Heck, if you want to be any good at Counter-Strike at all you have to learn the spray patterns. It's sure as hell a lot harder to get into CS than FFX, I'll tell you that much. and dont forget early Rainbow six games, Ghost recon, SWAT, ARMA, OFP.. etc etc sure as hell take more skills than any japanese game Fighting games, end of discussion.Because shooters have gentle learning curves.

Exactly. Both the JRPG and WRPG genres today have little in common with their predecessors from the 90s. Hell, FF XIII has very little in common with its direct predecessor FF XII, let alone FF games from the 90s...(I'll let you off for that Xenoblade comment though)
Developers make what sells. Western developers make FPS and RTS because they sell in their home market. While I'm getting bored of FPS myself (no more modern warfare BF3 crap please) they can be a lot of fun. To be honest FPS were a lot more challenging when they were pc only. Rainbow Six was one of the hardest games I ever played when it came out "What do you mean I can't charge at the enemy headfirst throwing grenades because the hostages will get killed? I have to think? NOOOOOO!!!!!!"
I just find games like black ops and so to be very fun and tactical.. Shooting to kill is not the reason.SOLDIER5678Black Ops is NOT tactical. The adoption of one genre almost always happens, given each generation. I don't think fps will be the IT thing next gen.
I think it has been forgotten what makes a great game on both sides. Any non-sports game series whose sequels make previous games in the series obsolete is garbage. I will even go so far as to say in this age of DLC sport's games should just offer yearly expansions for download for quite a bit less than $59.99. The gaming public does so seem to love getting ripped off. I think both sides are making games appeal to a lower and lower common denominator. The great games of the 80s and 90s were of varying complexities. Today's gaming are coming closer to complexity equilibrium. This sucks, to say the least. I remember when there were more than just hard-core and casual gamers, JRPGers and WRPGers. There used to be people who liked platformers, some liked beat 'em up, some liked FPSs, some liked Turn-Based RPGs, some liked action-adventure RPGS, some liked hack and slash and so on. The point is there used to be genre's to appeal to varying tastes. One example and I'll shut up. Front Mission 3 and Armored Core. Both about giant mechs. Both appealed to western and eastern games at the time. One is a turn-based strategy game with mech customizing, the other is a 3rd person shooter with mech customizing. Look at Front Mission Evolved. What's the difference now? Scarmiglionne4
I think you've hit the nail on the head with this. Video games today are becoming increasingly homogenized. There's very little variety in terms of AAA games these days. For example, before we had many different kinds of RPGs (whether action, turn-based, tactical, dungeon crawler, etc.), but nowadays it's mostly just action RPGs (even Japan is increasingly abandoning turn-based games). Before we had both simulation and arcade-style sports/racing games, but nowadays it's mostly just simulation. Before we had many different kinds of adventure games (whether text, graphic, action-adventure, visual novels, etc.), but nowadays it's mostly just action-adventure (or visual novels in Asia). Before we had many different kinds of strategy games (turn-based, grand strategy, tactical RPG, RTS, etc.) but nowadays it's mostly just RTS. Before we had many different kinds of shooters, in both 2D styles (shmup, run & gun, side-scroller, etc.) and 3D styles (rail shooter, light-gun, FPS, TPS, tactical), but nowadays most shooters are just FPS or TPS. Even stealth and survival horror games are no longer distinct genres, but they've mostly "evolved" into TPS games. Where's the variety these days?

Yes because games like EU3, HOI, CIvilization, Football manager, CK2, Total War, etc etc etc etc etc etc have gentle learning curves, no complexity and are over in minutes  What are the Japanese games you were talking about? :)I think its the other way around. FPS just become popular one console since 2005. and its funny i have been playing FPS since 90s and still not sick of them and want more. but console gamers who start playing FPS this gen are getting sick of them. it show the quality... You're a f*cking idiot.
Please go play Tribes, Quake, Unreal, or Counter Strike and then get back to me about how all shooters have "gentle learning curves," and the people that play them are too lazy or stupid to learn how to play "complex games."
Or better yet, go play some other Western games, like StarCraft II, DOTA II, Civilization, Total War, or any of the hundreds of other complex, challenging Westen games that are out there and tell me how lazy and stupid an entire demographic is.
Making sweeping generalizations about people based on the games they play. Wow.
and most rpgs from the east have things like 12 year old girls in skimpy outfits. so we have guns...and well 12 year old girls in skimpy outfits...what affects your morality more?Because shooters have gentle learning curves.

Mate, its nothing to do with blaming. there is literally less demand because they havnt kept up. that is fact based on their lack of success this generation. Its not because its japanese, stop being so stupid.MBirdy88You're making generalizations about an entire nation based on a couple of games you've played, i.e. all you're doing is making 'stupid' generalizations, mate.
Wolfenstein & Doom did not use the keyboard-and-mouse combo. It was Quake that popularized that control setup in FPS games.Jag85
Yes they did. The mouse driver had to be installed and the command to use it stated in the config.sys. I only played Wolfenstein 3D once with keyboard only and decided I needed a mouse. By the time Doom came out, the mouse was ubiquitious. I have a photo of my dorm room back in 1993. My (first DIY) PC of the time already had a mouse.
Edit: Windows 3.1 was already out for PCs. Other computers like Macs, Amigas, Ataris, Apple IIs, etc already had a mouse from the start.
