To all of those who say it has no/way too little gameplay:
The Gameplay in MGS4 is about twice as much/long as cod4, mw2, waw, halo3, fable 2, odst, uncharted 1, god of war 1, god of war 2, Killzone 2, heavenly sword etc...but MGS4 also features an extra 9 hours to tell its perfect story.
Ultimaspooges
No it isn't.
My first playthrough of MGS4 was about 20 hours and literally half of that was spent watching cutscenes. Hell, I even thought I was taking my time. MGS 4 is a 10 hour game when you strip out the cutscenes and I don't know how you figure that it's "twice as long" as those games you mentioned.
No game will appeal to everyone especially a game like MGS4. Kojima was faithful to the franchise and made MGS for the fans unlike other devs *cough* Capcom *cough* who went casual on DMC4 and RE5's ass. Majority of the MGS fans are pleased with the way MGS4 played, including me. The story was great and it was the perfect swan song for Ol Snake as far as Im concerned. As far as the hate goes it's obviously coming from fanboys, best to ignore.
Speak for your self I've been a MGS fan and a fan of Kojima's and Murata's writing since MGS1 and I was disappointed with MGS4 storywise. Gameplay was cool besides all the FMV's and all those weapons took out the sense of survival I was use to seeing in any Metal Gear game (also I only used six of the guns during my two playthroughs lol).No game will appeal to everyone especially a game like MGS4. Overrated. It's more of a movie rather than Game because of the long cut scenes. And the mandatory installs are terrible :xBloodSeeker1337
Not only that, but the game just doesn't appeal to me at all. The gameplay doesn't even feel right.
But I'm sure we're the minority.

You know there is a thing as asking for too much, Kojima could have only appealed to so many no matter how MGS4's story played out. As far as the survival element goes Im glad Kojima left that to the player, I know in the previous games if you don't use stealth the game will hit you hard but this time it's up to the individual. Play it as a stealth game and it is still a very rewarding experience but if you wanna play it as a shooter it's still tons of fun compared to previous MGS titles which weren't as fun if you wanna go gung-ho on everyone.
For one to not like to MGS4 has to be really PICKY or just is no there 'cup of tea' or is a HATER.
I mean do you really expect MARIO LOVER to like this action and story driven game?
Not everyone understands or likes the game for different reasons, for the ones that do, know why, it is one of the BEST.
The only thing wrong with MGS4 is that the game actually ended.
[QUOTE="surrealnumber5"]its no 10 and its not better than mgs3 but its a great game. my only major gripe is with gamesopts overlooking of minor flaws and still giving out its two 10's this generation omarguy01you know perfect score doesnt mean perfect game right? yes i do, that does not mean i have to agree with their grading. hell i would have given GTA 4 an 8 max, it has more than a few minor flaws.
Lot much people say it got too much cut screens less gameplay, also what i hate the fact that thay can't keep action in one place as they always did.
Oh and it's AAAAE here so lemmings obliviously try to still it from cows, now with MGS:R hate it :P
still it? you mean "steal it" ? so, according to you, the are too many cut-scenes to the detriment of gameplay? this thread is only one page youve commented on two peoples grammar, you need to calm down. I didn't comment on their grammar, I just did not get what they meant. as i'm not a native english speaker either, I may have trouble understanding certain things. I don't need to calm down. thanks for your thought anyway. o.OThe game is a masterpiece of a videogame, While I did enjoy the game, The problem is Once you beat ityou dont want to play it again
and plus theres no Trophies which was lame, the cut-scenes are a little lengthy, and the constant installing of the game killed it for me :|
Framerate, cutscenes are too long, story not that interesting, graphics overrated x 10, the controls felt awkward.
People didn't like the fact that it was a 10 here and just decided to say it is overrated and has too many cutscenes. The cutscene argument is dumb because we all know that Metal Gear Solid always has great cutscenes.

I read many disappointed comments of people after playing this game. I mean, it got 10 here, on Ign and has a a great average on Metacritic. so what didn't gamers like about MGS4? :?
sakura_Ex
Maybe a lot of folks don't want 9 or 10 hours of cut scenes in their games (btw, 9 or 10 hours is just a guess, feel free to correct me with a more accurate figure if you like).
I mean, some people might not mind a movie in their games...or two...or three, but I know that I mind. As I have said many times before, if I want to watch a movie, then I'll do just that...by watching a movie. I feel no need or desire to throw movies into my games.
Translation: I'm still upset over the fact that MGS4 got a 10 here on Gamespot.
Where did I say that I'm upset? Cease your deception.
The main criticism i see the game getting is for the cut-scenes, which doesn't make much sense, were these people buying MGS4 and expecting it to be something different from the rest of the series? The MGS series has always been built around cut-scenes, MGS4 was no exception.
It's like someone that hated shooters going out and buying Halo 3 and then complaining about it. Where is the logic in that? :?
Because I hate where Kojima took the story and some of the **** he pulled. AAllxxjjnn
This, and I even liked MGS2. In MGS4 Kojima exaggerated with the formula of the cutscenes, and some of the plot strong elements and plot twist where ridiculous to say the least.
Wut? They were all relatively easy to follow.story?...what story? I could not tell you what the plot was on any Metal Gear game. Also, the stealth game-play never grabbed my attention. Just not a fan.

That's the most over the top ridiculous review i've read. You should count the comments in this thread, I bet its 50/50 love/hate more or less.
Also, I agree with TheSixthAxis's review on MGS4, don't let random people on forums judge it for you, let professional reviewers.
Why you ask?
"Reviews like this are reserved forordinarygames. To review such a game as Metal Gear Solid 4 is like commissioning a blind man to share his opinion on a beautiful oil painting painted by a true artist, it just wouldn't work. The nature of Metal Gear Solid 4 lifts it above such conventional ways of judgement. But alas, the nature of the industry makes it necessary for even such a game to be subjected to such an insulting judicial process. For you see, this game is available for purchase to all, even the lowest forms of humanity who should deservedly combust and be reduced to ashes in the divine presence of it."

Best not to ask and just enjoy it yourself, just alot of complaining about too many cutscenes and them rushing through the game and thinking it's too short.
Throughly deserving the 10 in my opinion. One of the best games. Ever. Along with GTAIV, which they also hate...
Sometimes I just dunno... Two of the best games this generation so far, maybe the're a bit too realistic or something, but I love realism, esspecially if it's bent slightly.
personally i found all of them superior then mgs4, it's not a bad game by any means, just could be betterBecause i found MGS3 to be superior.

There isn't really anything wrong with MGS 4, I loved it, but I do think that it is a bit overrated.
Great game? Yes.
One of the best PS3 games? Yes,
One of the best games of this generation? Yes.
I don't think this game is a 10. Not on that level. It is a great game, one of the must own for the PS3.
Uncharted 2 is too good as well, but I didn't hear many complaints. and it's not only the xbox 360 owners that hate it because it's not on their system ( what a stupid reason btw ) but it's mostly ps3 owners, MGS lovers, that felt disappointed in this game.MGS4's problem is it's too good.

It's story was really disappointing for a Metal Gear Solid game, it was all over the place and had a mediocre ending. Also, I really liked the gameplay, but when I skipped all the cutscenes, I could beat the game in under three hours.
[QUOTE="SamGv"]I second this. I third this.MGS4 is one of the greatest games I have ever played.

Yeah it seems like Kojima was more interested in himself playing the game, and you watching. It's story was really disappointing for a Metal Gear Solid game, it was all over the place and had a mediocre ending. -Merill and i forget his name hooking up in a really cheesy mega stupid way
-major zero
-liquid ocelot
-Raiden
-vamp
-2 hour long cut scenes
MGS4 is lucky the game play makes the game worth buying.
Kojima really let me down on this one.
Sometimes, when people say nothingis wrong with MGS4, I wonder if they have actually played the game.
Multiple loading screens and installs are what's wrong with MGS4. Killed the set pieces with the loading and the replay value with the installs.
/spoiler/dsahghdajfhsdahf/spoiler/ When I found out the Darpa Chief was Sigant I was like :O. And the ending was fine, it was just a happy ending. And the metal gear boss battle is the best in the series imo.SPOILER! DO NOT LOOK BELOW IF YOU HAVE NOT PLAYED/COMPLETED THE GAME.

I seriously think when they were making mgs2 they were being extremely lazy. Every cutscene was like hey lets talk in the codec so no one can hear us.The people that whine about the long cutscenes of Metal Gear Solid 4 obviously didn't play the first 3 where you had to sit and listen to 15 to 20 minute codec conversations.

I really have to disagree with you there, because I have no idea how the stealth gameplay in any MGS game cannot grab your attention. I've felt more tension hiding inside lockers after alerting guards to my presence in MGS2 and praying to God that they don't open the door than I have in any other stealth game ever. Even after all these years, it's still pretty impressive how relentless the enemies are in MGS2. They've only improved since those poor, silly idiots in MGS1, culminating in literal hound dogs in MGS4 that will hunt you down until you die. As for the story, if you can't understand it, you probably haven't enjoyed a critically acclaimed movie or classic novel.story?...what story? I could not tell you what the plot was on any Metal Gear game. Also, the stealth game-play never grabbed my attention. Just not a fan.
