When does a new generation begin?

There is an argument about the next gen and if Wii-U begins it or if it catches up to it.

Did the Wii motion control start a new generation or did it perfect the Power Glove?

Is the Wii-U tablet an advancement or has it taken the Gamecube/PSP link cable forward but the system remains comparable to existing technology?

Does the generation begin when the games advance? I think it does, it's always been my measure... but I'm old, I used to think that we would always measure in bits... 4bit graphics... 4+4 equals 8 bit graphics, etc. It was a clear and easy way of deciding for a little kid.

Though I have negative feelings towards the Wii-U... I agree. It does begin the next gen.

I also worry that it fragments the next gen, and gives companys laterals towards game development and design that prospers Shovel-Ware and games that would be more fitting on an Arcade market, but are sold as Full priced releases.

Let's say the Wii U comes out this year, but Sony and MS didn't release new consoles until 2015, but Nintendo relesed another console in 2017, are the Wii U and the MS and Sony consoles in the same gen? I know that they would be considered the same gen, but is it fair to compare a console that is 3 years newer? Seems like Nintendo is releasing a stop gap system while MS and Sony can still get a few more years out of the 360 and PS3. Games are steadily looking better on the 2 consoles and I'm sure the same will happen with the Wii U, which I will be getting. Just a question and I would appreciate your opinions.

I consider it "When New Technology is Released". Not the system it's self....let's be honest here, the Wii was NOT a next gen system, and I have doubts about the Wii U, only a jump in tech marks a new generation cycle.

They were all competing but the SNES (Super Famicom) was released 3 years after the TurboGrfx-16 (PC Engine) and 2 years after the Genesis (Mega-Drive) in Japan.

Not sure why I didn't think of that. But thank you for the reply. Back then, the gap between their releases didn't seem like it was that many years apart.

Consider this: the Zeebo, a Brazillian video game console that runs on a crappy mobile phone hardware and whose library consists mostly of ports of mobile games, is believed to be part of the same console generation as the Xbox 360, the PS3 and the Wii, at least as far as Wikipedia is concerned.
