[QUOTE="ForceFreeze"]They didn`t expand on the universe entirely because there are other games that are going to do so. Final Fantasy XIII is set in the Fabula Nova Crystallis universe. Final Fantasy XIII-2, Final Fantasy Type-0, Final Fantasy Versus XIII are all going to be set in the same universe. However they are three compleatly diffirent games made by three diffirent teams who have had little to no contact since the creation of the universe. Fabula Nova Crystallis is alot like the Ivalice Alliance. Many up-comeing final fantasys are to be set in this new universe.blahsalt48
I agree on this. Error on my part that I neglected to mention the setting of FFXIII was an aspect that SE failed to delve deeper on. The game also treads extremely light on themes like purging of innocent civilians, discrimation based on background, so much untapped avenues squandered.
Regarding FNC, it has an interesting lore and mythology, I have no idea how the games are going to tie in with that, whether question for certain events(like the building of arks etc.) will be answered or not, or completely and conviently forgotten by the writers, remains to be seen I suppose.
I guess Lost Odyssey. Didn't experience any superb ones this gen.Mr_Cumberdale
I agree, some of it was reminiscent of FF9 in some ways, a really good plot driven JRPG which are few and far between this gen.I might only be on disk 1 but the story has been good and shows Sakaguchi is still better than Kitase then again put the 2 of em together :P *looks at epicness of FF7*
Mass Effect 2. And ME2 is in fact a role playing game. You build a character, manage stats, and roleplay. How is that NOT a role playing game? If anything, I'd say we should start disqualifying games as RPGs if they do not contain any actual roleplaying (many JRPGs would be serious offenders in this aspect). Maybe we should start referring to non-RPGs as "combat statistic management games."Timstuff
I actually once made a thread, recommending to categorize stats/levels games without the role playing as 'Customizable Adventure Games'. Didn't really fly with anybody here :P

It jsut isn't the same without Matsuno. (cough cough FFXIIRW)One thing I will add is that FFXIII had one of the most fascinating universe for any game's setting.
It is just a wonder as to how SE failed to explore the storytelling potential it had. Script was good for some characters and moments, but for the most part, it is merely alright, and at its worst(Snow, team NORA, NPCs, some cutscenes etc.), it is downright poor.
Devil Survivor should definitely have a nod, ME2 as well, out of the small handful of RPGs I have played this gen.

Nier easily.
This is the one game where the second playthrough is actually a much different experience. In fact, the second playthrough is arguably the last half of the game.
That game came out? Where can I buy it?RPG? Witcher
Gray Matter has the best overall story this gen though.

Itoi directed FFIX not Sakaguchi Sakaguchi officialy directed I-V and Kitase gives him directoral credit in a recent interview for VI. FFIX's story is mediocre, but the characters are great.[QUOTE="SAGE_OF_FIRE"] That game came out? Where can I buy it? blahsalt48Try a store that sells games. But if you seriously can`t find it anywhere try Amazon.com. I heard the digital copy from Amazon has problems.
I forgot about two titles. I know they are remakes but Final Fantasy War of the Lions and Tactics Ogre Let Us Cling Together have great stories.

To be fair, we did get better translations out of them this time.

The actual answer to the question is Mask of the Betrayersmerlusits alright, definitely Obsidians best story...but I think Dragon Age II topped it. One of the few ga,es however, where the expansion is far better than the original game. The original NWN2 was generic. Obsidian games are intelllectually stimulating, but they don't handle emotion well. Fallout New Vegas is an example of this, although Kris Kristofferson's character was good.

Tactics Ogre is easily the better of the two, especially with its morally grey choices.I have to agree with Nier, it had a great story.
I also remember loving The last remnants story even though i didn't like the game so much.

It actually gets the player involved in the story unlike the one you watch called FF Tactics. FF Tactics has a great story, but it is a huge step back from Tactics Ogre. The village massacre choice was far ahead of its time, no question about that. And sometimes, if you let characters die, they are dead, and out of the story. That is far more immersive than watching a story while you play, In DAII, if I kill someone in Act I, they don't appear in Act III in a place they would be if they survive. The huge advantage that WRPGs (especially the morally grey ones) have over most JRPGs is that they force YOU to answer moral dilemma's, not answering something for you. For example, The Witcher, do I side with a religious military order that does keep order, but brutalizes elves and dwarves, or do I join the elven and dwarven resistance group that commits atrocities against humans. Or do I stay neutral and make the conflict worse by not decisively supporting a side when influencing the king.[QUOTE="AdrianWerner"]That game came out? Where can I buy it?RPG? Witcher

SAGE_OF_FIRE
It came out some time ago,
Since you are not sure about Amazon. Gamersgate has it as well for something around 40 dollars. If not, I am sure you can find it on Ebay and other auction sites.
Since I don't play many RPG's it's going to have to be the 2 Mass Effect games.
It was the first time I actually cared about the characters, and what happened to them, even Kaidan despite me not reallly liking him.

Tactics Ogre is easily the better of the two, especially with its morally grey choices. Where did that come from? lol He was just saying the games have better translations compared to their originals. He didn't say anything about what title was beter.Mass Effect. It might be RPG-lite... but it has a fantastic story. Its successor was such a massive disappointment.
New Vegas, as much as I want to say Witcher, New vegas shows how the multiple factions are not Evil or Good. Take Caesers legion, they go around crucifying people and they enslave people............BUT...........Their territory is FAR more secure than NCR territory. Raiders are less of a problem for the Legion than they are for the NCR.
