It was overpriced at launch, had no games, suffered from a patchy online strategy, its features weren't available until much later, and games were being cancelled left, right and center. There was brand confusion (so it's just a regular DS with 3D?) Sales dipping to under a million worldwidefor an entire quarter. Iwata publicly coming out and apologizing. For a moment, it semed like Nintendo, the mighty unassailable handheld gods, had stumbled.

And then they got their act together.

An agressive price cut, an unrelenting fall schedule, an overhaul of their online strategy, an eShop loaded with content, full mutlimedia functionality and extra features unlocked, and renewed third party support. An aggressive advertisment campaign that makes it clear that the 3DS is an all new system. The 3DS is now setting sales records everywhere. Its games are topping the charts, and it is the most wanted item by kids this Christmas. It has already outsold the DS's year one total in under nine months. It has several excellent games now, available at both retail and digitially.

Who still thinks its a failure? And what grounds do you have for calling it a failure anymore?

I don't think it's a failure since it's probably making nintendo money but for me at the current time it doesn't interest me.

It will be great eventually.

It stumbled out of the gate somewhat, but it was never a failure in the first place.

Then again, it did release only 10 months ago (in Japan). You can't blame it for having a lack of titles.

Ultimately sales/profits of the console are the determining factor for whether a console is a success or a failure.

If the 3DS sells >50 million, I'm sure everybody would think it's a success.

If it sells ~25 million like the Gamecube...it's debatable.

But if it sells less than 10 million, it will probably be prematurely pulled from the market as a failure.

Then by definition, the console can't be a failure in Nintendo's eyes, even if it sells 0 units starting tomorrow.

The only consoles that have been failures (like the Dreamcast) are ones that barely sold any units.

It has games I would love to play, but I just find it out dated. I can't stand the one analog stick and the battery life sucks, also I don't care too much for the 3D but I guess I could get used to it a little over time. I'm wating for Nintendo to come out with a new 3DS model with 2 analog sticks and improved battery life, if they do that I will definately buy one. Don't know if it would be a good thing though because having a portable Zelda OoT would probably RUIN my life and distract me lol :P

Seriously I used to be addicted to my DS.

The battery life and build quality. 'Nuff said.

And it won't have a strong library of games until another year or so.

Basically, when the revision is out it'll be great.

Yep, Nintendo totally dropped the ball on those two. Surprising, considering that battery and build quality used to be the selling points for their previous portables. But the games, oh man, the games... You need to play stuff like Mario 3D Land and Pushmo to believe how good they are, and Mario Kart isn't too shabby either. The games are there now, the 3DS has finally hit its stride.

Look, the 3ds is on its way to being a great system - yes, it's moving in the right direction.

But a few good things doesn't fix a disaster.

I think the 3DS is garbage hardware with a ton of sub-standard software, but its not a failure, unfortunately. I like the concept, but the execution is horrible. I wont consider it a worthy choice until there is a revision that adds a much improved 3D display and a second analog stick, and also see some stellar 3rd party support and 1st party original ip's that dont include Mario or other worn out franchises. I think i will be waiting for awhile.

My girlfriend used to play with Samus all the time (before she moved over to Falco/Sonic), so I'm well rehearsed at taking Samus down as well...

It really is. Over 240 levels, plus it takes the 3D to a whole new level as well. Some of the puzzles can really stump you (I was stuck on 3-2 for the longest time :P) Best part is, you can create your own levels and share them online. Some of the levels I downloaded online are incredible, just incredible. At $7, this is a steal.

Definitely not a failure. Matter of fact, since I have purchased one, I realized some things I ragged on the system for I was wrong to do (I love the 3D in OoT so far). My only big issue is the screen scratching stuff. This is inexcusable and quite frustrating, but other than that, its a nice little system with many improvements as far as Nintendo is concerned. The games out now are great and there are tons coming. I hope they keep it up! I hope the Vita can get as many amazing games, cause it also looks awesome. or maybe I hope it doesnt so I dont have to buy one :P.

Is MK7 not as good as MKDS or whatever? Its the title I am most looking forward to picking up :P. My bro says Pushmo is really awesome, so I will probably get that soon.

Not according to your love for Nier :P. lol just picking. But I can see why someone would wait to buy a 3DS, although I hardly would call its hardware a disaster. The screen scratching thing is very annoying, other than that its just a couple hours short on battery life, which doesnt bother me too much.

The games are there now, the 3DS has finally hit its stride.

Is MK7 not as good as MKDS or whatever? Its the title I am most looking forward to picking up :P. My bro says Pushmo is really awesome, so I will probably get that soon.

Definitely not as good as MK7, but still one of the best Mario Kart games ever, and definitely better than the pile of crap that was Mario Kart Wii. If I had to rank it, I'd put it third overall, behind Double Dash and DS. But don't let me dissuae you :P Also, get Super Mario 3D Land! Than game is awesome! As for Pushmo, words cannot express how good that game i. It is to 3D what Wii Sports was to motion gaming. Get that game now! At $7, it's a steal.

I never thought the 3DS was a failure. I just don't have any desire to own one. Maybe once they are about $100 and have a way bigger and cheaper library to pick from, I will pick one up.

I bought my first 3DS game yesterday, the downloadable one called Pullblox. It is really good and makes excellent use of 3D. Pick it up if you have a 3DS.

I am so glad Nintendo are treating online services more seriously with the 3DS.

That's the one we've been talking about: Pushmo is called Pullblox in the PAL regions :P

The game is seriously excellent.

Yeah my brother keeps raving about how much he loves Pushmo lol. he said it keeps getting better and better.

What is it that makes MK7 worse than DS? DS is my favorite one, and I understand that MK7 may lack in areas outside of racing, but if the MP racing component is up to par with MKDS, that is all that really matters to me. I have never got into battlemodes and such. I asked for all of these games for christmas since I have bought way too much lately and need to ask for something lol. So I am sure I will have them then, and if I dont, I will buy them :P. Where do you rank 3D land among the 3D mario's? rank all of them for fun :P.

Ahh yeah I thought as much, weird that they changed the name. I have only been playing DS games on my system so far but this game has sold me on 3D being useful in games.

Oh, Pushmo is like never ending fun. Even once you're done with the 240 levels it offers, you can get user generated levels online. Man, it may just be my 3DS game of the year. The only three problems I have with Mario Kart 7 are a nerfed single player mode (no Mission Mode and no Single Player VS), which shouldn't matter to you; the character selection seems to be poor, especially after how good the DS game's characters were; and the 3D makes me sick. It's the only game so far where the 3D has affected me. It might be just me, since i never head anyone else complain, but it certainly does affect my enjoyment with the game. As for 3D Land, I think it's the best 3D Mario game ever, better than even the Galaxy games. I mean this. I made a thread about this a few days ago, actually. Ranking all of them, Super Mario World=Super Mario Bros. 3>Super Mario 3D Land>Super Mario Galaxy=Super Mario Galaxy 2>New Super Mario Bros Wii>Super Mario 64>Super Mario Bros=New Super Mario Bros>Super Mario Sunshine>Super Mario Bros 2

Seems like your taste in mario games is a bit different than mine since Mario 64 is still my favorite one. I would say 64 > Galaxy 2 > Sunshine > Galaxy, but to be fair I have not played Galaxy 1 in a long time, and I never completed it (beat it though).

As for MK7, it is lame that they took out Missions and so on, but they dont bother me that much. Not saying it doesnt matter and I wouldnt enjoy them, but those kind of things offer a few hours of fun then its over. I play MK for hours upon hours because of MP racing :). As for character selection, who cares? lol

Oh and btw does it matter what character you are now? By this I mean the fat people were plain and simple, better than the small ones, since the cart was all that mattered for speed, accel, and handling, but big characters can knock around other people easier.

Thinking of getting the Limited Edition Zelda version for Xmas But I'm afraid of a revision If I get one now, how much do you think it will be worth to trade in for a revision? I don't care TOO much about battery, I plan to use it at home, and don't mind being tethered, but I fear a new model will include a second thumb pad. I really, really want Zelda and some DS RPGs >:( And how is the eShop? Can I get some DS games on that?

And what grounds do you have for calling it a failure anymore?

charizard1605

Flashnews mr. hardcore blind sheep: the system is STILL overpriced, even with the price cut. Just look at the hardware you are getting. It's extremely outdated and no matter how 'good' the games are (I love the argument when people say gameplay>graphics, but truth be told we must demand BOTH), it doesn't change the fact people are getting ripped off. Some friends have asked me to buy the 3DS, but I refuse to support companies who's main audience are uninformed, and casual people; as well as 'family and kids'. I'll pass thank you very much.

I think my taste in Mario games is different from everybody else's to be honest :P

My problem with Mario 64 is that I did not play it at launch, and that game did not age well enough for me to appreciate it as much as I would have had I played it when it released. I still recognize what it did for gaming, just I don't personally think all that much of it.

hmmmm, we agree on Zelda so well :P. To each their own I guess. BTW I edited my post above.

So I wonder what they will do with metroid (and Zelda for that matter) on the 3DS. I would like to see a Super Metroid style Metroid with graphisc like Muramasa or something. I would like Zelda to use that OoT 3D engine (I think it will) and basically make another masterpiece just like OoT and MM :).
